I'm looking for some information to see if I am covered for a private sale if I pay with PayPal on an item that is not thru E-Bay? For example...if I pay with Pay Pal and dont receive the merchandise, what options do I have? Does pay-pal cover my loss? Thanks guys.

If you fund your PayPal payment through a credit card and don't receive the item you merely file a "item not received" dispute with your credit card company (forget PayPal's dispute process). Your credit card company will charge PayPal back and for you its like it never happened.

My understanding is PayPal offers purchase protection on its own, not dependent on where the transaction was facilitated (i.e. Ebay). I always pay with a credit card thereby doubling my potential sources for handling a dispute.

My PayPal is run through my bank account. If I buy something on line and there isn't enought money in my account then it's billed to my wife's credit card that we used to open up the account with. Is this thing as kvinbrwr quote?
You have to stop doing it that way. If you fund with cash you have to use PayPal's dispute process (which works but is frustrating and a little complex). If you fund with a credit card, you just dispute with the credit card company and its all over.

So whats involved in setting it up this way?
If you've got a credit card attached to your account, you are already set up. When you go to pay you have to make sure there is no money in your PayPal account and then in payment methods you select credit card and you are good to go. PayPal will always default to your cash as that is the best form of payment FOR THEM, so you have to have a zero cash balance and your account and you have to manually select credit card each time as PayPal is set to default to cash payment.
