Who makes the best cue in the $175 to $250 price range?

Devorator is selling a lucasi with a predator 314 shaft for $200 in the wanted/for sale section right now.

Which of the following makes the best cues in the $175 to $250 price range? McDermott, Lucasi, Viking or someone else?

Spending upwards of 250 that is 'sort of ok' is a risk. IMO viking would be my pick. Whippy like a meucci
but with Q.C.at the shop!!!

If you want to buy an import buy a Lucasi or lower end McDermott, if you want to buy American buy a Viking or a JP.

For the price range you have listed above the quality will be close to the same based upon materials. But, unless you can try the cue first you will not know if you like or dislike the cue. Each cue will have a feel of own even if they were made by the same manufacturer. So if you are going into this without being able to try the cues first then any of them may be what you are looking for or you may not like any of them.

Good luck, and before you buy if at all possible try the cue first!!!!

Agreed, but sometimes it can be difficult to try cues before buying them. It's impossible here in the UK.

I would recommend buying from a retailer that allows you to return cues, even if they are played. I don't know if there are any catches, but it seems a good deal on the face of it.

Look ar Fury. Their hit is great whether its a $100 or a $1000 cue.
You get a human ferrule and an everest tip, so you don't have to immediately spend $30 on a tip change.

I do have several for sale, if you like pm me for details.

I picked up my brand new custom Bob Thompson from AZB'er Rugerfan for $250. I love Bob's shaft taper (perhaps similar to Mike Bender's) and his craftmanship is superb, as is his unique sense of style (you can see more of his work in my thread here). Thompson has some really nice and stunning designs, though they're admitedly not for everyone (but what is??) I love my cue and I feel like it is the best I've ever owned. Mine is the one on top:

Dale Perry cue from Ebay, i've said this several times....great playing cue for the money. Not the best workmanship but solid players nontheless!

You included "lower end" McDermotts under imports. I thought all McDermotts were made in the US.

Purchase a Good shaft first.

Dale Perry will make you a LD shaft for your current cue if your butt section is still solid and straight.
Mike Erwin will make you a highly respected shaft for $105 shipped.
Mike Erwin is the way I would go. Call Mike. You will enjoy talking with him.
Dale...not so much.

McDermott has 2 different lower end brands available. The two different brands are called "Lucky" and "Star". Both of these lines and made in China but I like how the company describes them as internationally manufactured ;) The Lucky line is less expensive but still delivers a quality hit, the Star line is a bit more expensive cuz they get a little more flash. They are all just paint and decals though with no real inlays but they do have a decent shaft and tip for the money.

Now about your original question. IMO McDermott is going to give you the most quality out of any of the cues you're considering. I just got a good US made McDermott with their G-Core shaft and it's by far the best cue I've ever hit with. I think in the price range not over $250 you can't get a better hit not to mention workmanship quality than their current G-Series cues. I know you can get a wide selection of their cues with the G-Core shaft for less than $250. I know I spent a lot of time considering how to spend my $200 and now I couldn't be happier (thanks to a fellow AZ member). I hope this helps a little bit. Good luck to you brother.

For your budget, and for the best quality in that budget your going to have the best range of options with either the McDermott G-Core series cues, or Viking cues. You can also find a selection of Pechauer JP series cues that will fall in your budget range. They all make great cues for the money you have budgeted. But the McDermott G-Core shaft will give you the most technology oriented shaft among the brands listed.

Thank you. Your comments mean a lot and are definitely helpful. I've put together a short list, with five cues I've been seriously considering. Two of the five are McDermott g-series cues with G-core shafts. Your comments reaffirm what I've heard about McDermott and echo comments I've heard about their G-core shafts.

I didn't know their Star and Lucky cues were... uh... "internationally manufactured", but, no offence to those lines, I hadn't really thought about going that way. If I buy a McDermott cue, it will be a US made one; most likely one of two G-series, G-core cues. One that I like could see myself owning goes for $225 and the other costs $242.

Some people, whose comments I appreciate greatly, have recommended I call a couple of custom cue makers to see what they can do in my price range. I put calls in to both and waiting for a call back. However, I'm still leaning toward a McDermott. Your comments in particular, are reassuring in this regard. You described it as the best cue you've hit with by far. Those are strong, compelling, and helpful words.

Out of curiousity, how do you compare the G-core to other LD shafts? I know it's not their top of the line i2 (which if I do buy a McDermott, I can always upgrade to IF, at some point down the road, I think I need to). But do you see much of a difference in terms of lower cue ball deflection from solid shafts?

Well, thanks again.

you can pick up an OB sneaky pete for about $350 with your choice of LD shaft. Yeah, for just another hundo, you will never need to buy another cue unless you want to because of the looks, cuemaker, investment, etc.

Best thing I ever did after 30 years of playing pool, and I've had plenty of customs and still do.... they just have OB shafts now.

it is definitely worth it to spend a bit extra to a cue that you'll be 100% satisfied with. instead of spending 200 and ending up with a cue that your going to want to replace. I havent tried an OB cue but I bet they play great and have heard awesome feedback on them.

Yep !!! the best thing about it is I can now buy any custom cue I want, and not worry so much if I will like it or not.... cause I'm just gonna slap an OB Classic Pro shaft with my favorite tip and fire away.

Thus, now all my cues really do play the same.... except for my Spain... she's retired...... and no OB for her..... just in respect for Burton :)
