Varner vs Strickland 1991

Thanks for posting this great match. Both Earl and Nick at their finest. Love the attire - it adds so much to the ambience. Watching great players in thier youth is so enjoyable.

Classy

Nice match and thanks for posting it. We forget about Nick on this forum and he is one classy guy.

I've seen both of them play considerably better than this match, but it was interesting to watch nonetheless.

The table conditions were quite different back then. Seems as though the pockets weren't as tight, but the felt was quite slow.

thanks for the link, quite interesting....and THAT was ralf? (with hair?).....also, earl can't ever "let it go and move on", and couldn't do it then. however, more than once he congratulated nick for a great shot...great match and even a little "tebow" from earl at the end......thanks again for posting

I've had this match for a long time. Easily one of the best matches I've ever seen. Well worth the watch.

Yes, I'm through the first clip and it is very good thus far. The only problem is that the video quality is so poor that you can't figure out the balls on the table- like which one is the 1, 2, 3, etc

Hi I'm the uploader of the video. Consider this match was recorded in VHS and then converted. This is the best quality available. I hope the match is enjoyable anyway. You are watching the semifinal, I have the final too.

I am very happy you uploaded it and I'm enjoying it for sure. I understand the limitations of the technology, was just stating the only drawback

I think the video I linked is titled as the finals match

I've had this on tape for years and used to put it on just for that shot. Hilarious.

Earl not liking the laughter and then pulling out that 2 rail shot was classic.

I might be mistaken, but I think it was the first pool shot that made the Sportcenter highlights for the best of the day.

The commentary was simple and didn't get too wordy. Thank God Incardona was one of them. That's how pool matches should be. At least on ESPN. A great battle of the titans. Ahhh good old American Professional Pool. They actually had a tour back then.......

There's also the semi-final of Varner vs Archer linked to this. Matches I remember vividly, worth watching!

Those with keen eyes might spot me and my then-girlfriend lovey-dovey in the bleachers. Still telling my students about one referee call in particular, because I had the perfect angle to watch what had happened, and have since then always quipped that we don't need referees unless they're doing a better job of it than the players would without them. Worst of all was the after-conversation with Varner, of which I had the sad opportunity to overhear every word, and in which the guy admitted the he'd seen moving did so because Nick sort of pulled on the cloth, in other words, that he'd never meant to say he'd seen Nick touch it (he didn't get close enough to touch it, whether with his hand nor any part of his clothing), in short, the guy didn't even seem to know the rules…

Greetings from Switzerland, David.
