Stroke shot?

Set the cue ball on the foot string one
diamond out from the long rail. Put an object
ball along the head string so that it is in
perfect alignment with the head rail nipple of the
corner pocket on the same side of the table
as the cue ball.

Pocketing the ball is not difficult at all. The
test is to pocket the ball and have the cue
ball hit the long rail on the other side of the
table before the side pocket.

In other words if you set up on the right hand
side of the table hit the left hand long rail before
crossing the side pocket.

Try it on the left side and then on the right to see
how much better you may be one way or the other.

Depending on the size and cut of the pockets this
shot will test the consistency of your stroke.

I'm sure most of us can do it, some can do it 10 for 10
others 20 for 20.

Report you results if you like and tell us what size table
you were on.

A picture's worth a thousand words.. you've only got a fraction of those words and I'm not getting the picture. Are you just trying to hit the long rail on the opposite side from a shallow angle cut, or are you trying to use top or what?

If you are on the left side you need to use
some combination of high right to get the
cue ball to contact the opposite long rail
before the side pocket.

I decided to go with something more current, in the style of the diamond tables..

So, you mean something like this, yes?

Is this the shot?

That's a tester for sure.
I dunno if I get 10/10 or 20/10 lol. Maybe 10/20!

You got a couple of ways you can do it. You can focus on stunning the ball with less than full top... a closer-to-center hit gets it to stun sideways more than full high-right. The more sideways it goes, the less right spin you need to reach that opposite rail.

Or you can just focus on really twirling the crap out of it with maximum right. You may contact the head rail only around the first diamond, but the spin does all the heavy lifting to get you across the table. That's probably how I tackle it.

You can also consciously try to cheat the pocket. Being aligned with the nipple basically means you aim to cut it parallel to the long rail. At warp speed, or long distances, I think trying to hit a specific part of the pocket is a tall order.

I take exception to your saying, "pocketing the ball is not difficult at all."
I tried it, and with my stroke being what it is, I made a ball on the table next to me.
Fortunately it was the nine-ball, and the guy won the game.

Almost

Banks,

That's close but the object ball is in line with
the other nipple of that same corner pocket,
not on the rail.

I apologize to all for not knowing how to use
pics on here.

No..you got the head string, but I think he's saying have the ob about a ball off the rail..
I'm most likely wrong..but if thats the shot,I don't see the problem getting over to the other long rail before the side pocket..little out side will take the ball streight across, you do have to hit it a little..cb will be spining as it slides across the table to the
right...thats how I play it anyway.
Have a good one.

Scratches is correct. OB off the rail along the head string. In reality on a 9' table the object ball is about 7" off the long rail.

Scratches,

Set it up and try it. I'd be interested to know if you can get the cb to the other long rail with just side.

Just below center outside...on my 8ft table..but I am aiming just before center pocket through the ob..
I realized I didn't say below center after I posted..lol
Pretty sure I can't..may try some force follow with tons of left going in to the left rail, then across with out hitting the head rail..but why?
You can cheat the pocket..hit just off center with a good draw stoke and slide over, the fist shots just easier..
But then I practice crazy chit man.

I think this is the shot, right?

With the 1 ball 4 1/2 inches off the rail (after removing the 2 ball and 3 ball, of course) I could consistently get about the angle shown, sometimes even below the 3rd diamond, by using maximum sidespin with no follow or draw and a medium stroke. It took a couple of shots to lock in the aim - I wouldn't want to have to do this on the first try in a game.

This is on a 9-foot Brunswick with old, sticky cloth - it wouldn't be quite so easy on a table with newer cloth.

That's it.

Patrick,

That's the shot.
I had it in agame last weekend and failed to get the
position I wanted so I set it up and tried it at home.

I was surprised how touchy it was, next time I'll know.

Here's another test of your sidespin stroke. Try to get the cue ball to go two rails to the bottom-left corner pocket. If you can get it to hit the left side long rail, that's even better.

This shot works best with the slowest stroke that reaches the target and some draw.

Or this one

This little shot has came in handy several times for me. It works great on the long rail but effective on the short rail too.
Just use outside english, and you will have to experiment with the speed to get the desired effect.
