Pool Cue Dimensions

I'm in the beginning stages of having a new box case made for myself and need to provide the dimensions of the cue to the company as they do not typically manufacture cue cases. I know that the butt and shaft are each typically about 29" in length but I can not find how large the diameter of each is on a standard cue.

Why would you need a pool cue box if you don't own a pool cue?

It depends a bit from cue to cue. At the joint they might be 0.850 inch, the shaft decrease, and the butt increase - tip of shaft to 14-11 mm (but different tapers, so not always conical) and butt really depends on the maker.

I owned one several years ago but have since fallen out of possession of it. I've gotten back into the game and have decided to treat myself with a new case and cue. The case comes before the cue so I have storage once the cue gets here.

why not use any company that routinely makes cue cases

I am curious what company it is. Does it need to be a mystery?

There are many companies that can do it actually, I looked into it myself. I am just curious.

Butts are often about 1.250" in diameter at the bottom, plus or minus maybe 50 thousandths of an inch.

Shafts are often about .840" in diameter at the bottom, plus or minus maybe 20 thousandths of an inch.

For flexibility, it's good for the case to be a bit over-sized in all dimensions (without being "sloppy" big), including length (some cues are longer than 58").

If I was having a custom cue case made to my exact measurements, it sure as heck seems like I'd want to have the cue in hand FIRST and then base those measurements on that....

Especially if I'm dealing with a company that has no prior knowledge on the subject.

Just a IMO.

Case

The one box case I had, my first case, had foam on the underside of the top lid to keep the cue firm in the case. Keep in mind that if you have joint protectors, that will add about 1 1/2" to the length. Actually, the case should be made about 32" long on interior size.

I don't care for box cases myself because I need pocket space for all the asessories.

Let me build on the first statement....

I don't care for box cases myself because I need pocket space for all the asessories.

And because if they do....OMG.

I don't even feel like dragging a leather 4X2 to the pool room some days.

butt 1.25 diameter, joint .85 diameter length 58 inches

The large majority of them produce sub par products and the ones that are quality don't take custom orders. I wanted some additional storage space added.

I am curious what company it is.

I really just needed basic dimensions. Knowing that I will most likely replace the cue down the road I was planning on instructing them to leave a bit of wiggle room to accommodate different manufacturers.

One year later...


Well there was a substantial delay on my part due to a decision that the funds I had set aside would be better spent on an engagement ring (September propsal date). After gathering together some mad money again I contacted Cedar Creek Cases, they seem excited about a project that is a bit different from the norm. After choosing my basic case options and providing the specs for a 1x1 with storage and a cue ball pocket they quoted a maximum build price of $489.00. I figured people might be interested in the event they were looking to have something similar made.
