Time for a new Cue

My first cue is falling apart. Its a cuetec I got as a gift a while back. Looking to make an upgrade on a budget. These are the cues I'm considering.

Mcdermott g223c
Valhalla Val-030
Poison Cyanide Cyst Storm
Poison Anthrax AX5
Players Hxt-sp8

All of these cues are under $250 which is my budget. All should be better than my cuetec. Anybody have experience with these cues? Care to shine some light?

The Mcdermott is the only one made in the USA if that means anything to you. The others are imports.

You can buy a custom from Prulhiere on your budget.

You can also get a vintage D series McDermott for that money. Legendary players.

Barring those choices, I say look at the new McDermott.

I don't know much about cues but I've heard that American cues are better than imports, nobody ever specified why though. Also makes you wonder why Predator is doing so well.

A custom cue could be interesting but having only played with one cue, I don't really know what specifications I'm looking for.

The vintage Mcdermott D is now on my list.

Thanks for the quick replies guys.

Just got a nice purple heart Meucci Sneaky Pete. I supply the wood/ Bob & team builds the cues. 4 pt. > black dot shaft. Pretty cue-

You have a big selection for under $250.

Meucci
Joss
Dale Perry

These are my picks since I sell all of them.

I don't get the Predator comment exactly,,,,,,,,,,you realize Predator Cues are located in Florida right?

There are certainly foreign cuemakers who make good cues,,,,,,,but overwhelmingly the amount that just make cheap imports for the american market is the norm,,,,,,,,,therefore they pretty much all get the bad rap. On the other hand, there are american cuemakers who make poor quality as well. As someone else said, around your budget, stick with Joss, McDermott, Dale Perry,,,,,,,,,,,,and they are names that will hold some value for you when you upgrade later.

I had a newer McDermott that I'm just now getting around to sell and I must say I really still like playing with it sometimes rather my Josey.

Not a bad cue at all the G core shafts really are great.

I had a Poison Anthrax several years ago when they first came out. Sold it and wish to heck I hadn't.

Wow, This thread hadn't seen some action in a few days so I stopped keeping track. Thanks for all the replies guys but I ended up ordering a Lucasi lhf46 for $385 which was over my budget, but given that it came with a free big beulah 2 break cue, I went for it.

I'm quite new to pool in general so I'm not sure what I want just yet, I figure this is a start. I'll write a review for the cues once they come in. Hopefully some time next week.

Wow! Never would of thought....

Must of been a good (bullshitter) salesperson with
that not so important warranty.

The resale price on this cue is not so great when
you might want to upgrade. Of course resale value
on most cues is not so good. Could of gotten a nice
Joss though....

It was Nielson's Billiards/ Joerackem. I've heard only good things, rated 99% on ebay...Said the promotion was over a long time ago but because he forgot to erase it in one part of the ad, he's honoring the deal. We'll see once the cues get here.

$400 on a Lucasi Hybrid is kind of insane. Could've got a nice Schon or Mezz.

Well, I figured msrp on the cue is 485 I was paying $385 and I got a free Big Beulah 2 (msrp: $314) That sounds like a deal to me.

Obviously Lucasi's won't hold their value as the american cues do but I don't intend on reselling it nor am I a collector so this is not a problem for me. Worst case scenario, it becomes a house cue.

I wanted a playing cue and unfortunately, I have no idea what suits me yet so this will probably be a trial and error process. Hopefully in the end, having a better idea of what qualities I need in a cue, I'll have one tailor made to my requirements.

Wait

Wait wait wait....for the love of pool and all the usefulness of this forum please please please post in the wanted/for sale section that you're looking for a cue in the $250 range first. You will be surprised by all the responses and offer you get.

Go by the feel

The best suggestion I can make for you is to find a place that has some of the cues that you are interested in and get a feel for them in your hands. That is the only TRUE way to shop for a cue.

However, if that is not an option, this would be my thoughts.

McDermott, had several, a solid cue that feels solid like a tree trunk solid(radial pin joint)

Poison, low end Predator cues, best to feel before buying. Not for everyone.

Players, I own a HXT15 A very solid cue for the cost. Do NOT see a difference in the LD shaft versus the standard shafts though.

I currently use a Fury cue. They are produced in China, are Lucasi low end cues. Should be a large selection that will fit into your budget. I actually just ran across one on eBay with 2 shafts, though slightly higher that your budget. It was item 110976555429.
