Filipinos are a different breed of players than Americans, number one.

I can't tell you how many times I've seen Jose Parica retire early for the night if he's got a big match the next day.

Doesn't matter what time Jose goes to bed...Brett's going to put him in the loser's bracket early.

Bob Jewett is on the hill!
You guys thought he was just an intellectual?

Bob Jewett wins....11-9...

Anybody's race.

Saez is no push over either

I think that you might have it right. The last week has shown that Robb can keep it going on the table. He beat Wan Can and Warren K twice each. A couple of bumps in the road (RA and his nit antics) didn't keep him from backing up in the 10 ball to only be stopped by Shane and Johnny. Pretty strong right there. If he keeps his head he can take it out.
I for one hope he is there at the end.

I also like Kenichi Uchigaki, Chris Melling, Yukio Akagariyama, Oscar Dominguez, Phil Burford and Brandon Shuff.
Of course Earl, Darren, Shane, Dennis O and the other elite will have good showings. I also think Karl Boyes is the dark horse. That boy can play REAL good when he gets in swing.

Should be a great weeks viewing!

Having scanned the brackets, I'm inclined to call this the toughest US Open field ever. Greatly increased European participation as well as slighlty wider Asian participation add up to this ----- it will take some phenomenal play to win this and the matchups should be amazing by as early as the third round. Worldbeaters will be shown the exits early.

Nice to see that the foreign based players don't skip American events the way Americans based skip foregin based events.

Inclusive of our defending champion, I'd rate the top 20 contenders as follows, listed alphabetically and no, I've not considered who has an easy and who has a tough draw:

David Alcaide
Ronnie Alcano
Yukio Akagariyama
Darren Appleton
Carlo Biado
Francisco Bustamante
JL Chang
Corey Deuel
Niels Feijen
We Li He
Thorsten Hohmann
Mika Immonen
Pin Yi Ko
Chris Melling
Rodney Morris
Dennis Orcullo
Alex Pagulayan
Brandon Shuff
Ralf Souquet
Shane Van Boening

... but it's the Open, and anything can and will happen. This is going to be great!

Good list stu-id scratch out Shuff, Corey and Neils only.

Gabe Owen seems to not be playing this year, same with Schmidt- two conspicuous absences in terms of the USA. I wonder why those guys aren't playing or maybe I just missed them in the brackets

For historical reasons, I want it to be Darren. For sentimental reasons, it should be Efren, but I voted for the guy who's on fire right now, twice a bridesmaid, but never a bride, Ronnie Alcano...

I'm pulling for Daz, but if Alcano plays the way he has in the past few weeks, sally bar the door, because he's gonna sit everybody down.

The most potentially dominant player in the whole event is Jung Lin Chang. If he hits hit top gear he is the favorite to win the whole event. He has been extremely dominant in Asia against the best from both the Philipines and Taiwan for years now winning a huge number of tournaments. He is also the current world 8-ball champ.

It is amazing almost noone on this board even notices him in the draw.

My pick is someone in their 30's from the North East part of the USA.

And not one of the popular names listed. I'm rooting for an underdog.

I told Jay about Jung-Lin Chang back in 2008. I've seen him alot over the years, and he's a very, very solid player with great nerves.

Sentimental favorites are Tommy Kennedy, Shannon Daulton, Oliver Ortmann and Earl.

Pin-Yi Ko is a real good player, but he seems to have trouble with closing out matches. He seems to have lapses in concentration or lack killer instinct.

I wish Fong-Pang Chao, Po-Cheng Kuo, Chei-Wei Fu and Ching Shin Yang were playing. That's a "Murderer's Row" line up.
Kuo, if he was playing, would be very hard for anybody to beat. He doesn't travel much, but he's a great player. I'd like to see him and Orcollo match up some time soon for some $.

Dennis Orcollo is always a threat to win anything, as is SVB. Huidji See seems to be peaking and Darren Apleton can't be counted out either. Warren Kiamco is playing at the highest level he's ever played at and is another one who is peaking.

I wish Allen Hopkins, Nick Varner, Buddy Hall, Thomas Engert and Mike Sigel had entered.

Lastly, look out for Yukio Akakariyama. No matter how far he gets behind, he grinds as hard as Varner used to. His mental game, for somebody so young, is really solid. He is about the calmest player that I can think of. No matter what. Not calm as in stoic like Ralf, but he looks like he's practicing in his basement when he's battling the elite upper-crust players.
No show of nerves and likes to shake hands and smile alot. Good guy.

Enough of my editorial......

If I had a gun to my head and had to pick the finals, I'd have to say Jung-Lin Chang vs Yukio Akakariyama.

It would be great to see Shannon Daulton win this. It would go nice with his other championships.

And how awesome would it be to see Tommy Kennedy have a flash-back and win another U.S. Open!

But we all know that with so many great, great players, anything can happen. It's going to be fun to sweat.

I think Chang is favorite to win too. He rarely misses any shot.
I hope he breaks well with the break box rule.
