[League Etiquette] Is this rude or do I just need to lighten up?

[League Etiquette]

There is none .
I was playing in the league for almost a decade.
One night one of my oppenets was so drunk that he pissed his pants.

I couldnt do it .I just couldnt play on the table. his team captain said there was no rules that my oppenet broke. I forfitted the game and at the end of the season I quit. I took first place season. and won end of season top gun.
and quit the league.

league is not about who is the best player. its not about having fun. it is about bars making money....................

maybe you guys have better league then we do but Our legue is corrupt.

We have players that want to play but argure about every rule and they dont care If you call a foul, they whin to the point the game is not worth playing.
I dont argure with drunks and in over all the years I havent seen one drunk player told that they were to drunk to play.

I play pool because I enjoy it not to talk shit and see if I can disrupt my oppenets.

Rest assured, not all leagues are like that.

Yes, we have the occasional dramatic moment, but nothing like what you describe. Most everyone here likes each other, or at least can get along.

Hopefully, if you ever have the thought to consider a league again, or are invited, you can get a chance to check it out and see if it's like what you've experienced, or what I have. They can't all be like yours, even though they might not all be like mine...

To me, that's just rude, but to him, waiting a few minutes and having someone else score for ten minutes is not a biggie. He claimed he thought they would wait for him, which I've never seen in the history of league... "hey, can you guys hold off on starting your match until our scorekeeper is ready?"

We had some strong words over it. Am I just being uptight?
looks like there are a couple of different things you're asking about.

On the last situation where he's already reluctantly agreed to be a score keeper, it would be unusual in my experience for him to not stop his game and start keeping score immediately.

On the initial issue, some players just aren't made for keeping score. I'm not. But on a team, I'm normally going to be called on to coach or hell, just be the guy to watch ( low standards, don't you know).

If the guy doesn't serve any purpose to the team, the captain should do something about it. However bear in mind that his fervor for practicing might come back and bite you in the ass if he ends up on another team.

Freddie <~~~ doesn't play well on a scoresheet

My experience wasn't nearly that bad but nonetheless I never want to play in a league again.

It was all clerical, organizational, and "political", and not nearly enough pool. The higher up you go the more political it is. Some that have spoken up on matters such as this qualify their opinions by stating they were or were a league operator, like their opinion should count mor than the many players. I don't like it. It's just more politics.

I have more fun playing pool now than I ever did and I don't play well. The least fun I ever had was playing in a league.

But as far as the guy in question, it seems he is inconsiderate. It seems the OP cannot see his way around the desire of a player to just play. Others have posted that in their league it is not necessary that every player score but that does not seem to matter.

I have to really wonder what the player in question thinks of all this. I bet he has a completely different perspective. People have tossed insults at him yet they have never met him and don't know him at all. The only perspective they have is that a participant in this forum does not like his behavior and hence that make him an asshole. Most people do not belong to this forum. In fact most pool players do not belong to this forum. Sticking together is one thing, but defining others in a derogatory manner simply because they don't post here hardly seems realistic. The guy wants to be at the table. To me that is a positive and I would try to work with it. But that's me.

Apparently the OP cannot get along with the guy. Get rid of him.

I love playing pool, our team took first place 8 years in a row.

It was time to get out everyone was b****ing .

Where I live is small town 15,000 people. the nearest big city is 165 miles away. It really is like being in the stone ages.

I shot bca league in carson/reno 15 years ago , It was completly different,
I never seen a arguement, up here its one arguement after another.
We have no unsportsman like conduct rule...:thud:

sorry I kinda went way off topic . way off topic
all the members of the team need to stand together.
Drop the person from the team. It is a team effort that wins. and it is a team effort that makes it fun.

I'm twice as interested in pool as he is. And also a much better player. But somehow, I don't expect special treatment. When it's my turn to score, I get up and do it without complaint. I don't cry when I have to put down my cue for an hour.

Look at it this way. The only reason he CAN play pool is because he's on the team. He's broke and would be stuck at home otherwise. We give him a ride to the pool hall and several hours of free table time a week. The LEAST he can do in return is score a match.

8onthebreak... I like your post. You make some good points. I don't wanna be that guy who quotes every sentence and replies accordingly so I'll just try to reply generally.

It's true that when he scores against his will he sucks at it and it's all f'ed up. And scoring drama leads to hot heads which causes poor shooting later. But IMO most of the reason he sucks at it is not because he's "Not a numbers guy", it's simply lack of practice. If he actually did it more than 5 times in his life, he'd find it's pretty simple. Like a lot of things, it's not so bad once you get used to it.

Part of why some people hate it is they know they lack scoring experience and it won't go smoothly... they scared of screwing up in front of everyone and getting into some debate over it. So they just keep ducking it.

"If nobody likes it, replace a non-contributing member" - ah, but non-contributing in terms of win rate? Or in terms of willingness to be a team player (show up on time, score as needed, get the packet, don't argue with the captain's choice, don't constantly ask to be put up first, or last, or not at all, etc.)?

"He's the doctor, don't make him do the secretary's work" - If there's a secretary available, I'd make her do the paperwork. But there isn't, so the team splits the chore evenly amongst all the doctors. It really stands out when one guy thinks he should get a free pass because he finds it tedious. We ALL find it tedious. I dunno where you find someone who doesn't but you're right, you're lucky.

You may be right about me being frustated about other things and letting it spill into the league. I won't go into a ton of details about the guy but let's just say he's not working 50 hours a week with a wife and 2 kids to deal with. He has kind of a teenager's mindset I think, and I resent that he's willing to let other people carry his weight. That resentment probably turned this into a bigger deal than it should have been.

I get it ...
But still I've just never had any of these problems. Someone always picks up the pen and doesn't ***** about it.
Players add value in only a couple areas...performance, behavior, and commitment.
Sounds like this guy is ok on 1and 3...overall good package.

To your original post...I just think that the whole thing is getting too uptight, transferring emotions to the rest of the crew.
Based on one comment you made, about not questioning "the captain"...
It seems like theres some pushback on his part maybe...
I've always ran my teams as a joint effort, we vote on almost all issues, and I rarely ever need to make a decision,...I will when I need to tho.

Try to loosen up, let the team relax, it's not a business...it's just pool, have fun, let your faithful crew enjoy it...you took on the role of captain...figure out how to get the scoresheet filled out without causing drama with the guys:cool:

Good luck on the team, hope you guys work it out dude

Well it sounds as if he is inconsiderate. But that isn't exactly consistent with what you said earlier. You said you and the others were primarily interested in the social gathering etc, hence my comment.

...You did ask for opinions on your position. It sounds as if you are already quite entrenched in your position on the matter and are not willing to lighten up about it at all. So get rid of him.

Well, we are there to have fun... but the fun can't happen without someone doing the boring paperwork. I think most of the team understands that tradeoff. If we all decided we'd rather play than keep score then we'd be out of the league.

You're right about me being entrenched in my position... I was about 90% sure he was out of line. I guess the other 10% is the reason I posted the poll. But most of the posters seem to agree.

The guy is a jerk
Why would you choose to pollute your life having him around?
You randomly run into enough assholes in life, why schedule a once a week visit with one...

He's actually a really nice guy. Buys you dinner, calls his mother every week, good with kids and animals, etc. He's usually careful to be considerate in other ways. On one thing, Chopdoc and I agree... nobody needs to label him an a-hole or any other names. I think he was out of line this one time but my rant is only half the story.

There is none

Ouch! Sorry to hear about your league experience. Mine has been very mixed too. I've played in 4 different ones and this one is the only one that I actually look forward to. It IS possible to have a fun league night, but your odds might be worse than a coin flip.

On the initial issue, some players just aren't made for keeping score. I'm not. ...bear in mind that his fervor for practicing might come back and bite you in the ass if he ends up on another team.

Yeah, but if everyone else took a turn, and someone asked you to do it, would you? Or would you tell them "sorry, I'm not a scorekeeper"?

No offense... "I'm just built differently" seems like a copout. Nobody is physically or mentally incapable of drawing little hashmarks on a sheet of paper. They might get bored doing it but it's only for roughly an hour.

I've also seen a few guys suggest his constant 'practice' is why he's a strong player, but I don't consider what he's doing real practice. He's just messing around playing racks of 8b vs. friends, not doing drills or anything. He's messing around, not actively improving himself.

Based on one comment you made, about not questioning "the captain"...
It seems like theres some pushback on his part maybe...

Thanks... We did shake hands at the end of the night and agreed to forget about it. For the record I'm not the captain. I just notice some guys argue with their captains in situations where they should just let it be. Our team mostly is drama free, and I wasn't willing to tank my friendship with the guy over something minor, even though I still feel he was in the wrong. I figure we'll be ok.

That wouldn't fly with pretty much anybody I know. He may not have to do it every night. Hell, sometimes I don't mind doing it just because it gives me something to do.

That said.. we're all "built differently". Dude needs to nut up and score a match here and there. I've been scoring matches for 8 years, I'm a 7/9 and been doing it since I was a 4. There's no reason I should be exempt from doing it and if I need to warm up(like others don't?) before a match I can easily find the time to do that and score a match some time during the night.

Next time he calls his mom, he can ask her what she thinks he should do.
