Amazing Controlled Jump Shots

Hi there,

there are some really nice *jump shot cues* on the market. It s just like with a *normal playing cue*- you have to take it in your hands and see how it feels for you. Especially for jump-shots you need a good technique- also your size is important (hands, forearm etc. ) to get yourself into the correct position- that s one of the important keys to make a successful jump-shot.

If someone really has trouble in general to make jump-shots do yourself a favor and get the dvd from Robin Dodson. She s goin nicley through the process with you on this well produced dvd.

It s all about skill (unfortunatley, lol!). And to find the right jump-cue...well that s the same story as usual^^ Don t care to much what everybody is advertising. You need to test it yourself. A well manufactured jump-cue is of course helpful. But before you could say, that a jumpcue is *fantastic*....you need to be good at it :-)

And the guy in the video imo could jump with almost every jump cue^^. His technic is brilliant.

Good video, but I don't see anything amazing. anyone can jump like that after a couple of hours of practice.
If you wanna see amazing jump shots then you should see what Prayingmantis72 can do.
Here's one of the shots that he can do consistently and there are thousands more, tutorials done by him.

The guy is just incredible. He shoots pool as a hobby, sometimes doesn't pick up a cue for months, plays regular pool on a pro level , one of the best if not the best jumper and also does other crazy trick shots effortlessly.

This guy is sick... Check out his next video...

Wow

Especially liked the length of table jump to frozen 8ball to 'cut' it into corner.

Anybody have a theory/guess of how that was made?

A mid-air double/triple kiss???? Crazy good.:shocked2:

James Hanshew, makes a really great 3 piece jump cue as well. Purple heart shaft on them for $150. I have one and it is very versatile.

He is some kind of mutant. (and I mean that in a good way) Does everything in the book wrong, but gets the job done somehow. If he can play for the $$ at all, he could easily get guys lining up to play him once they see his "style".

That's Prayingmantis72 for you. His real name is Rick McAvay. If he played seriously, he'd be playing with Shane and the rest of the crew.
Rick does it just for fun, only couple weeks a year, sometimes doesn't touch a stick for as long as 6 months.
He teaches chess for a living, runs marathons, does bodybuilding and plays professional poker.
He shoots so effortlessly, no matter what it is, trick shots or regular pool. You should see how easily he runs out rack after rack after rack in 9ball.
He says that after learning all "impossible" jump and masse shots playing regular pool is like taking candy from a kid and challenges anyone to play 500 a rack.
He used to play in artistic competitions with Tom Rossman, Mike Massey, just to name a few, but quit because most of it are set-up shots and like he says " a monkey can do it".
He used to play tournaments also, but quit because it's "too boring" for him.
And his nickname Praying Mantis came from his unorthodox bridge.

If he wants to play some $500 a rack then he make a lot of money at the DCC next month. He shows up with that bridge and he will have customers bidding on spots in line to play him.

He is a fantastic trick shot artist along the lines of Florian Kohler. It's a pleasure to watch him. I doubt he wins playing ten ball against Shane and the other top pros. Circus shots come in handy at times but playing top level pool isn't about trick shots.

That said I certainly don't want any part of him with his arsenal of shots!

that's the thing, he makes enough money playing chess and poker professionally and too busy for pool. Anytime he gambles pool he wins. That's the reason he's bored with pool too. Not enough challenge.

Almost has to be a double kiss. The shot rocks but I am betting that it took a lot of tries to do it. I am actually impressed that he even attempts it.

We used to all sorts of crazy jump shots in our exhibitions and one was jumping about 8 ft into a six inch space to make a ball and kee the cue ball on the table.

My friend Chris started out with a much shorter shot and keep increasing the distance until he could almost do it within five tries consistently. So he sees Buddy Hall walking towards the booth and he says to me that he is going to nail it in front of Buddy.

I say no don't try it Buddy will think jump cues suck when you don't make it......Chris sets it up anyway.

And he times it perfectly to when Buddy is walking right up to the booth and is looking dead at the shot. Chris unleashes and the cue ball goes 8 feet into the 6 inch space and nails the object ball and the cue ball stops dead!

Buddy says"nice shot" and comes over to ask about the cue. He then proceeds to put on a jump shot clinic that was NUTS!!! He spent about a minute or so until he announces, "ok now I know how it deflects", and then proceeds to jump with incredible precision. Buddy hit the shots so softly that it looked and sounded like he was playing with a regular cue.

He does it consistently. For the video he shot it three times, but failed to keep the cue ball on the table in the first tries.

I hear what you are saying.

But the flat reality is that if he is truly that good then he can go to Manilla right now and bet as high as the sky. I am serious.

He can take a briefcase with a million dollars in it and get action against Orcullo, Reyes, Pagulayan, Bustamante etc....

He can play one pocket with Scott Frost for $50,000, Shane Van Boeing has millionaire backers.

Why not make a clean sweep of the pool world and really retire on top? It's easy to SAY you don't want to match up with known champions because the game is too easy and another thing to actually prove it.

He does not even have to start at the top. Chris Bartram is ready to play $10,000 sets, James Roberts is always willing to get in the box. All of Houston gambles like the apocalypse is coming.....

I told Lomax this story and I think I told John as well but since we are talking about jump cues i am going to tell it again....

I started traveling for a living in '98 and I never went anywhere without my cues... In the early 2000s I happened to be in Mobile for a big tourney and every mofo in the place seemed to have one of the bunji jumpers... You would never know it until they needed it and they went to the case... When I say everyone I mean everyone including Buddy Hall.....

I ordered one the week after the tourney.... It arrived and I spent a day relearning the shaft jumps i had learned a few years prior... At the time it was the nut's...

So I show up for job in Birmingham and I'm working my ass off but Friday night shows up and i have to decompress... I head to a spot called Bumpers.. Not because I want to gamble but because the waitresses are friendly and the female clients are even friendlier...

I showed up and started playing with the regulars... i didn't ask to gamble i just wanted to hit balls... After about an hour I was up about 8 shots of Jaeger and an education that you need when out of town... I had already been warned about who you had to look out for and lo and behold he showed up and with an entourage of about 6.... all of em bigger than me.....

I keep playing with the local and the guy start woofing pretty hard... Jaegar makes you bullet proof so it got under my skin quick....

When I got there after work and took the balls to my table there was a house cue on the table when I walked over... I noticed it was missing the tip as as I slid it under the table before I racked the first rack... This comes in soon...

So after 30 minutes of woofing I am getting tired of hearing it... Gamble gamble gamble... bet bet bet....

I ask him if $100 is enough gamble and he walks over and says sure... I pull out a quarter and tell him to call it.... He looks shocked.. But I point out he wanted to gamble and with his entourage in tow he has no choice.... He calls heads and with tails I take the first hundred....

He wanders back to his crew and I keep playing the local..... 30 minutes and 1-2 more shots off jaeger go by...

He starts woofing again and says he can spot me anything I want..... Wow... Reallllllly.....

I explain in the olden days the spot was you have to play with the cue I pick for you from the house cues.... I tell him we can do this for $25 a game... He agrees... You recall the cue from earlier??? Yup he got to play with the house cue without the tip that I had stuck under the table when I got there....

So now he's $300 hooked and this is the point that jump cues become a part of the story.... He goes and sits down and he is pissed and his entourage is giving me the evil eye..... Regardless of how nervous the regulars were the had not left... So I start playing with them again....

2 games in I break and make a ball but I end up with the cueball and the one-ball both on the head rail.... I was straight in with the one ball a half diamond in front of the pocket except for the 7ball being in the way.. Well let's say it was in the way visually but I had 5 inches between it and the cueball and 9 inches of landing area and the 1 was huge being close to the rail.....

I set up to kick at the one with a high hit going 3 rails... I have to bend it but It's got odds... At this point my new found nemesis pipes up with $20 says he don't hit it.... I did mention Jaeger was involved?... $200 and I will make it. He takes the bet......

The bunjis were great cues.... They set the standard and they also made it possible for me to pull it out of my case and get my arse in a huge huge pickle......

I made the 1 and knew I was never ever going to make it to my car.... The regulars pretty much confirmed it..... They all fled from me at this point like I had the plague.....

At this point i was looking for the window in the bathroom.... But it wasn't there.... I had one play to make and I made it....

I walked over to him and his crew with the jump cue in hand.... "I'm pretty sure you haven't seen one of these before.... "give me 100 and you can have this one and I'll show you how to use it"......

He was smiling and shaking my hand as I left..... A bunji saved my life....

What makes him a "Master Cuemaker"?

If you can't figure that out by looking at his cues, than I don't think you understand what makes master cuemaker.

He's been building cues for 30 years, of the HIGHEST caliber. His cues all play as good as they look. He has given advice on construction and technique to many cue makers, that are considered to be top builders today. His ring work alone would warrant him the title. I can go on and on about the various inovations, quality, and multiple top level players that play with Keith Kustoms.

Not to mention, all of the above is accomplished with out the help of computerization or panto-graphs at any point in the design or construction process!!!!!!!!!!

If you'd like to learn more you can also check out the blue book of pool cues, as well as the encyclopedia of billiards.

best,

Tanner...That person is an excellent jumper. I've seen John Barton make some pretty sick jump shots too, with the Bungee Jumper! Great shotmaking no matter how you see it!
