Lyn,
New York Blackie wasn't unlike your friend and mentor. He grew up in a different era and struggled in life to get by on his pool game alone.
While suffering from the pain you inflicted on him (the justified beatings), your mentor could only mutter those imperfect words, as part joke and part truth, primarily to cover his own pain.
It is tough for some people to take a whipping and realize that the whipping doesn't sum up their entire existence as a human being.
Up to that point, I'd always thought Larry Hubbart's reply to my question of what a "short stop" was took the cake. "Look in the mirror" was his answer!

At least you were able to look in the mirror and at the very least see a "short stop".
Whenever I look in the mirror all I see is "short on talent"!!!
Maniac (would love to play at short stop speed)
How long ago was that? (Just wondering if he became the world champ)
Nevermind, I just read that was back in 1980. Ok, but I'm still wondering, did he become a world champ? ;-)
After posting a video here, I was told that I am too timid, and too tentative. By someone here who rubs people the wrong way with regularity.
Problem is, he was right.
I missed that video. Post the link (if you don't mind) so I can compare our speeds (which I believe to be similar). Curious to see how the skill levels compare in different regions of the country.

This should be fun.
Mine, occurred yesterday and it was not tongue-in-cheek.
"Joey, you have NO TALENT". (This coming from a guy who knows the game of pool, plays very well and has taken many a scalp in his time and YES, he was serious). It's only sad when it's true.
Ok, what's the biggest slam on your pool game that you have ever heard?

Eric Derbin told me I couldn't in my wildest dreams ever play at the speed he could when he was in stroke. He told me this after I beat him for 1200. I told him I had 1200 that said I matched up better than him. He's a funny guy.
