" He knows the english just not whats its gonna do "

Lyn,

New York Blackie wasn't unlike your friend and mentor. He grew up in a different era and struggled in life to get by on his pool game alone.

While suffering from the pain you inflicted on him (the justified beatings), your mentor could only mutter those imperfect words, as part joke and part truth, primarily to cover his own pain.

It is tough for some people to take a whipping and realize that the whipping doesn't sum up their entire existence as a human being.

Joey,

Thanks for the post. I've been accused both by some of my fellow posters and immediate friends of having a too thin skin. This bothered me for quite a while. He is why I play at my current speed ;). Up to that point, I'd always thought Larry Hubbart's reply to my question of what a "short stop" was took the cake. "Look in the mirror" was his answer!

Another one of my mentors, the late great Pat Howey, used to spot me 150 - 120 for years. When he got ill, the situation reversed. Was sad to see his decline. Still yelled at me when I made a poor shot choice (before I shot). To the best of my knowledge, Pat never took his personal problems out on his fellow players.

At least you were able to look in the mirror and at the very least see a "short stop".

Whenever I look in the mirror all I see is "short on talent" :(!!!

Maniac (would love to play at short stop speed)

I agree!

I think for some reason on AZ the term "short stop" has really lost its meaning.

I always considered a short stop to be someone who could really play. Someone that was a just a notch below the big boys.

Around here, I get the feeling that everybody thinks they are a short stop.

But you can still put me down for a 2nd baseman, or is it a right fielder?

How long ago was that? (Just wondering if he became the world champ)

Nevermind, I just read that was back in 1980. Ok, but I'm still wondering, did he become a world champ? ;-)

No, Joey, he did not progress to a champ type level but he did make a little noise with pool stories and such in our area.

We became practice partners after that and he made a little noise during our sessions. Passing gas was second nature for this fellow.
He could be at the table singing Rod Stewart the part about stealing Daddy's cue and farting at the same time.
He was something. All in all a good guy.

After posting a video here, I was told that I am too timid, and too tentative. By someone here who rubs people the wrong way with regularity.

Problem is, he was right.

I missed that video. Post the link (if you don't mind) so I can compare our speeds (which I believe to be similar). Curious to see how the skill levels compare in different regions of the country.

Oh my, I should do a different one, for sure. Thing was, I wasn't really trying to do everything the right way at the time, it was more of a lark one night, and I intended on asking about one specific aspect of the way I was holding my cue.

I didn't think it through to realize that what I was intending wouldn't be received the same way. :p

It wad a good lesson, in many ways, and spurred me onward, so the embarrassment was worth it.

Sometime after the turn of the year, I may try it again, more seriously, and see what folks think.

- You can't beat this person or that person (still to this day hear this)
- You play too many safeties
- If you actually tried to improve you would be one of the top on Des Moines
- You are too short
- You bank too hard
- You don't play as well as you think you do

Here's the thread, from the Ask the Instructors subforum.

I can't really remember much that I really took as a slam. Well, I played in one tournament where the guy handicaps races. He held one at a strip club and they played 8 and then 9 right after. I won the 8 and took second in the 9. I was probably an APA 6/6 or something at the time. The next time I played, I needed 3 additional games in a race to 3. I had to play another guy that also needed 6. I beat him, but he wasn't too happy about it. "This guy's not even good, he's just lucky." I was a little offended, but nowadays I'd rather people think I'm just lucky!

Another time, not too long ago.. somebody that would also pull that "bank it" or "last pocket", etc, usually after a nice run to set yourself up perfectly at the end. Oh, and I think we played 9b 5/9 with him getting 2 for the 9 and me only getting 1. I almost always ended up ahead, sometimes more so than others. When he said, "We play about the same", I wanted to punch him. Oh, and I didn't usually try all that hard against him, because I knew the likelihood of me getting cash was pretty slim.

JA told me "You cant make a ball" & "You dont play worth a shit", which considering the source he is right, LOL Its all relitative...

This should be fun.

Mine, occurred yesterday and it was not tongue-in-cheek. :D

"Joey, you have NO TALENT". (This coming from a guy who knows the game of pool, plays very well and has taken many a scalp in his time and YES, he was serious). :o It's only sad when it's true.

Ok, what's the biggest slam on your pool game that you have ever heard?

I am in Marietta, GA. MBC, I am hitting pool balls on the pool table. I am not making any balls just hitting them. I had my 3 way hook out fishing. A guy walks over to my table and says, the guys over at another table said you are the man! But, I don't think you can make a ball and you look like you don't have any money! I did not say a word, just kept hitting balls. He said again, I said you can't make a ball, and you look like you don't have any money. You can't hear?
I looked at him and said you summed it up, OK! He says I will play you some 9 ball $10.00 a game maybe you can afford that! By now I am real angry, I should not have been that way, but I was.

I looked at him and said let's play some pool. I did not like the guy's attitude at all. But I played him some 9 ball. Race to 7 games $10.00 a game, post up every game. I did not say a word to him the whole match. he quit after the match with the score being 7 wins for me and 7 rack the balls after each game for him.

The bad part about this story is that I did not know the guy had a lot of money. And Justin was watching the whole thing happen. He said to the guy I'll play you some 9 ball, the guy looks at him and said I will play you some 9 ball a $100.00 a game. Justin laid down a little bit, and end up later in the match giving the guy the 7 and out and winning $2000.00. I looked at Justin and said, I won $70.00, and you won $2000.00, I need to not get upset at what a person says to me. Sorry for the long story!
Many Regards,
Lock N Load.

Maniac,

Bet you have more fun playing pool than me! My friends say I'm the nicest guy till I get to the table. Somehow a switch gets flipped and it's all "business". Hard to enjoy oneself when the internal pressure to win is too high.

One of these days I'm going to stop playing pool again. Wait, that's one day I'm going to quit playing tournament pool and play only leagues. No...Ah... Maybe I should just quit period! There's always poker. Don't retirement homes have shuffleboard :o :p?

Eric Derbin told me I couldn't in my wildest dreams ever play at the speed he could when he was in stroke. He told me this after I beat him for 1200. I told him I had 1200 that said I matched up better than him. He's a funny guy.

I was at Derby several years ago. Watched Earl play a match then went outside to smoke. Earl was out there so we started talking. Earl had been wearing his arm weights so I asked him if that was just to make him more solid over the ball. Without missing a beat Earl said "No, I'm just screwed up in the head. If I wasn't wearing this stuff I couldn't even beat you".
