8 Ball Rules

Two top players were playing recently and there was a couple of rules that I thought were messed up.

They were playing that the 8 on the break you didn't win you just spotted the ball and ran out from there. But if you made the 8 and scratched you lost the game. I have played that the 8 on the break is a win and then if you make it and scratch you lose but if it doesn't count as a win it shouldn't count as a loss.

They were also playing if you are shooting at the 8 and scratch you lose but one of them was shooting at the 8 and jumped the cue off the table and said that wasn't a loss, does this make any sense?

The one where he shot the cue off the table was 100% a loss, the other player got duped on that one.

Playing with the 8 not winning on the break the NORMAL rules are the shooter decides of they want to keep shooting or if they want a re rack and re break.

If a player makes the 8 on the break and scratches the same rules follow but the NON breaker gets to choose if they want to shoot out the rack or if they want a re rack and break.

They were playing by incorrect rules.

BCA pool leagues rules are you can't win or lose on the break from the eight ball going in and not scratching or scratching. Bar rules are up in the air with different people. Making the eight out of turn is a loss in BCA PL, or making it in a pocket not called. Over the years I've seen any manner of rules out side of tournament play. APA players can make it on the break and win. I think you will get a lot of different opinions and rules.:)

Eddie May...There are no "correct" rules for 8-ball. You have APA rules, BCAPL rules, VNEA rules, and WPA rules. As long as both players agree to whatever rules they want to play by, THOSE are the correct rules. Sounds like these two were playing mostly by BCAPL rules (which closely mirror the world standardized rules).
