What would you do?

How do you know they are not from this country??????????
So if someone doesn't look white, they must be from somewhere else?

Normal behavior? So it's not normal for people to gather around a pool table and hit balls around and not have fun.

:shakehead:

First off, I don't know whether or not the specific group of people being discussed was from a foreign country or not. My posts have been based on the generic stance that when people move to a foreign country they have to have *some* responsibility to incorporate themselves into the culture of the new country. Just as you and I would be expected to act differently if we moved to Japan, Russia, or Brazil.

Second, you're trying to stir up a racist debate when there isn't one. If you re-read most of the posts, the discussion has been on differences in cultural views from one country to country, and as it relates to those that move to a new country. If you want to fan the "racist" fire, that's on you.

Finally, of course it's normal for people to gather around a pool table, hit balls around and have fun. That's a very common occurrence for lesser-skilled players to do in our wonderful sport. However, as skill level increases, players learn to stand away from the table while others are shooting, and to be mindful of others playing around them. It's just common courtesy and called table etiquette.

Sounds like paradise, but it will never happen, because of one thing: Religion. But we're not having that discussion and for the record, I totally agree with you. I brought it up as an example people understand and don't see much grey in.

Unfortunately I have a terrible habit of trying to see both sides of the proverbial coin. In the case of Pidge and the Feet I don't think it had anything to do with race, just culture between pool players and people who play pool.

Nailed it!

I can't understand a lot of what religion preaches. Hate and intolerance because you read a different book just don't make sense to me.

I'm glad Pidge kept his cool though. I was just offering a view of the situation from his odoriferous friends point of view..

You're right as rain Ghosst. Religious intolerance is itself odiferous.
As for the Chinese thing, I think that this was simply a group of rude individuals who happened into a pool room.

When someone is annoying the patrons in a place of buisness it is the owners responsility to deal with them! In the end it's his buisness they're going to hurt.

Even tho they are in your country, as far as they are concerned, you are still a Gwai Lo. (White Devil)

I just want to thank you for this post and making me add 1 more item to my case... a box of 100 thumb tacks in case i ever run into a bunch of shoeless asians

A bunch of women who were at my local joint for a Xmas party and who squealed louder than a pig farm every time a ball went near a pocket already got me to add ear plugs a few years ago...lol

LMAO !!! Good one ! I'm buyin some too !

2013 and racism is alive and well in America.

First you say it's not a serious game...then you made it serious.

If someone is shooting on a table next to you and they are in the way, you should play position so you don't have to go on that side of the table.

You were way too serious about a game...and only a game.
You got all hot and bothered when you were playing for free anyway.

You did say the guy you were playing was a lousy player....;)

I think you're way out of line calling him racist. Just because he mentions their nationality that in and of itself is not racist in the least.

And you tell him to play position to accommodate their rudeness..... really?

Maybe you're just having a bad day or something but I think you're way off base.

I play the owner of my pool hall every week. He wins I pay double for the table time. I win I get the table time and drinks free. Its nothing serious just friends playing for some bragging rights. So that was the situation I was in.

We were about 5 games in and a group of around 6 guys came and played on the table directly next to us. No big deal. Then they all take their shoes off and they HAD NO SOCKS ON...wtf? Right, they were all Chinese...maybe that's how they roll in China idk...but the smell of feet was off putting to say the least. They were playing some kind of combination between a card game and pool and were having a great time but they were being really loud. They could of all been slightly deaf...idk. No big deal. But everyone, around 30 or so people in the pool hall were getting pissed. They all stood around the table so shooting a shot on the side closest to their table became impossible so everytime (like 15 times, after the 2nd you'd realize) I had to ask them if I could just squeeze in and shoot my shot. No big deal.

The combination of smelly feet, shouting and having no common decency started to piss me off. Then as I'm down to take a shot one of the guys (I'd say twice my age and in his 50s) bumps into me pushing me off balance and making me miscue like a MF. I stand up, he looks at me I look at him waiting for the appology and he turns around and acts like nothing happend. So I confront him and get a tonne of abuse in Chinese so I offer to wrap his cue around his face. Now no violence happened and the owner told them to pay and leave, which they did.

I was thinking after if I could have handled the situation better. And regretted the way I conducted my self. I lost my cool and that wasn't cool.

What would you guys have done?

I understand why you got pissed off I am sure your reaction would have been mirrored by anyone else on AZB. In fact the fact that it took you so long to get pushed to that point was amazing in itself. You respected their space and whatever they were doing, so they should have done the same. Nothing to feel bad about

Most likely in the UK.

Altho, he didn't tell the guy to sit on an English cucumber. So I'm guessing too.

First let me say, that just because these folks were Chinese make little difference to me. I have seen more than my share of Americans be a complete horses ass, so that in my view has no bearing on this issue in the least.

It is obvious that these guys had no manners, period. I usually try the nice guy approach first, and if that doen't work, I use the "I'm an old man and a asshole" approach second. In my view, the owner should have taken charge as soon as he saw there was an issue in his establishment, but that's just my view. If I said something to a guy that just made me miscue, and he cussed me out in any language, I probably would have had the same response you did. I wouldn't sweat it.

Yeah the nationality of some one doesn't make the slightest difference. If someones rude, they're rude.

The owner had a word with them a couple of times. Each time they'd settle down for 5 minutes or so then they'd start to get excitable again. The group were quiet until they bumped into me. That's when shit hit the fan.

I think you have to be aware of your surrounding and act accordingly. Something which they didn't do. Pool room atmospheres around here are a lot like libraries. Quiet, the occasional mumbling, people concentrating. You wouldn't go ape shit with excitement every time you turn a page, would you?

Dunno where all of the china bashing comes from.

Well... I do, it's old fashioned racism. AZ has kind of that back-of-the-small-town-garage vibe sometimes. There's the wall calendar with a girl bent over a motorcycle. There's Timmy doing his hilarious "pork flied lice" line. There's Jethro bragging about how he'd f*ck up those immigrant lowlifes.

If you guys never saw a chinese player who could hold a cue, you haven't been paying attention. There are plenty of chinese pros, guys you barely heard of, who are among with the world's best. Who wants to watch a 9-pack from Chang Yu-Lang? How about an 8-pack from Wu Chia Ching? No? OK, check this out... Busty was on the hill 14-4 against Ko Pin Yi, scratched, and never got back to the table.

Well anyway. enough ranting. Definitely handled it wrong. You got bumped by a guy and he turned around like nothing happened? That's because nothing did. A bump is a bump. This isn't an episode of Oz. Get over it and continue your game, or ask the owner to handle them.

I was wondering also why the owner didn't say anything. The other part is you must not know how to clear a crowded poolhall on the backstroke. It only takes once most of the time.--Smitty

What would you guys have done?

really, you offered to beat him with your cue cause he accidently bumped into you and he did not say sorry?

Yeah, you gotta way bent out of shape over nothing. A good dirty look and then reset the balls and continue shooting.... and then ask your buddy to throw the dumb arses out.....

I mean, to start a fight over a bump is pretty childish, and usually done by young guys who drink too much while in bars ( and pool halls I guess)

But threatening someone with a pool cue is a crime in itself, it's called assault. He bumped you, and you stepped it up to a felony..... do you kinda see now that you over reacted just a shade :)

Certainly nothing worth breaking a guys skull open, going to jail, and/or being sued........

You wanted an honest answer, so I gave it. Don't be hatin'
