Should I get a Viking cue, or something else?

You said that if he wanted to WIN you'd steer him away from Viking. Well, how about Cuetec then? Generally MOST have a low view of them as well, even MUCH lower than Viking. Yet Shane does ok with one. Allison and Earl did ok....Were/Are they sponsored? HELL YEAH!! Could they have won with a Viking? yep. How about a Joss? yep. McDermott, yep. Schick, Hercek, Szamboti, Tad, Black Boar, Scruggs, Gina, etc. etc. etc. ALL - yep.

that is NOT personal.

:bash:

You are now off topic.

I recommend a Joss from a small dealer with a 13mm shaft, Dale Perry with a 12.75mm shaft, or an Erwin with a 12.75mm shaft. Scott is making simple good playing cues right now for a great price.

I do not recommend any cue from a big box store. You'll end up paying way too much.

Well, to be honest, even if I do get to play with the cue for a few hours before I buy it, I can't really judge it that soon... I mean I can see if it's bad or really good, but I can't feel it's full potential until I truly get used to it...

hahaha...this reminded me of something. A couple of years ago Shane shot around with my cue a bit at the Derby. I realized right then that my poor cue would never get that close to it's "full potential" in my hands. lol :p ;)

The Vikings from 2012 and later with the V-Pro are really good playing cues.
For some the hit might be a little too solid/stiff but they are certainly very good.

The Vikore shafts have been on the market for such a short time that I have not
yet tried them. That will change soon.

$350 will just about get you into a Mezz cue with WD700 shaft, also a very good option,
allthough brand new will be hard to find for $350.

What do you play with now and what do like/dislike about it?

Are you looking for a low deflection shaft to go with the cue? shaft diameter? stainless steel or implex joint? 30 or 29 inch shaft?

Oh...I strongly disagree. With the right cue and that magic hit, you'll know after just a few shots, then try english on the cue ball and move the balls around. Then try some tough cue shots, long shots and if the cue doesn't miss...it's the one.

You will know. It will be like------love at first sight.

Right size diameter shaft and tip with the right shaft taper...the right weight and balance...you will know right away.

If you are a good player, you will know!

Oh I see then, I suppose it's a lot about personal preference... What would you recommend?

I recommend seeking to define and satisfy his preference as best as possible. :)

I would say it's all about personal preference.

totally, right on.

same goes when getting your spouse a vehicle....regardless if you think there are better options for the $$$$$. Let her get what she wants. :p

nothing wrong with viking at all. I had one as a break cue and thought it was well made and had a good hit to it. Only reason I sold it was because I found an OB break cue to go along with my OB playing cue.

For 350 you can look at OB line of cues. A good amount of cues at that price and you are able to choose your shaft that you want.

I'm a McDermott fan, and they have a huge array of looks and feels to choose from. In that price range you can go with a pretty sharp looker with a g-core shaft, or a plainer butt but a 314/2, I2, etc low deflection shaft.

AND, when it turns out to be a total piece of krap that spends more time in the shop than in the garage? Keep your mouth shut while never expecting her to say you were right.

Back to cues..if you like the Viking, buy it. Nothing "bad" about a Viking in my opinion. They are a well made cue, made right here in the USA out of quality wood.

By the way guys, what about McDermott, Lucasi and of course the one I forgot - Poison.

I have only hit a few racks with the Viking and it was Ok just the feel I was looking for. In my opinion you can't ever go wrong with a Lucasi or a Mcdermott.

As far as Poison, they are Ok the hit is really stiff and for the price range you are talking about I would just get a Predator. Or you call up Dan Janes and have hit make you a Joss that fits you like I did.

In the end of it all it is up to you and your personal preference and what you like as far as feed back and feel. If you like Viking then get one. But you can't go wrong with the other choices. JUST STAY AWAY FROM MEUCCI!!!!!

I have customers of all playing levels and customers who swear by different brands, but when it comes down to it, its usually a personal decision. I sell a lot of Viking cues, but I also have customers who will only buy Meucci, or only McDermott, or only Lucasi. If you don't have experience with the different brands and you're looking to experiment, my suggestion is to buy a cue that is known by many different players so that if it turns out not to be your favorite, it'll be easy to sell. Most production companies such as McDermott and Viking have low priced models with no flare, but all the same characteristics of the higher priced models. The new ViKORE shaft from Viking gets a lot of great reviews.

I think it has to be one that you like. Personally after my game starts I pay little attention to anything but the taper and the tip. Find a cue that feels good in your hands. Viking, McDerrmott, Bludworth, or Scruggs, or whatever. Asking that question here always opens up a can of worms, everyone has a favorite.

My first "real" cue was a viking and I loved it. The taper is/was nice. Gets a little bendy when you hit the cue ball hard. I kinda like that aspect. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the links in your original post.

Right now I play with a really cheap Fury cue. I want to upgrade to a higher level cue. My current cue's shaft isn't perfect. It's not as smooth and stroke-friendly as other shafts on higher-quality cues I've tried. And it gives off more vibrations from the hits. It's really not a bad cue, especially for the price I got it, however I am looking to upgrade to a great quality cue that's of course more expensive. Also, it's worth mentioning that I used this cue to get where I am in the A leagues here and also my success on recent tournaments. I think that a great player can play with any cue, but of course, it's better to have a higher quality one.

Hmm, a Predator for 350$..? Can you give me a link to some?

your choice

I'm a tournament player and I am looking for a new playing cue. I want it to be great for playing(Not like high-end Predators, but still high quality) and keep it a long time. I am also looking for the price range of up to around 350$. I was looking at some Viking cues and found many in this price range. What do you think? Here are some of the ones I like(In random order):

http://billiardwarehouse.com/cues/viking/viking_v105-bl_pool_cue.htm

http://billiardwarehouse.com/cues/viking/viking_v114-bluestain_pool_cue.htm

http://billiardwarehouse.com/cues/viking/viking_v123-BL_pool_cue.htm

http://billiardwarehouse.com/cues/viking/viking_v129-BL_pool_cue.htm

And also a deal I found where you get a free break cue:
http://billiardwarehouse.com/cues/viking/viking_ltd-se50-red_pool_cue.htm

Is that break cue good? I already have a break/jump though, but since it's a bonus... hehe =P...

I know a lot of the extra money goes for decorations in these Viking cues, but what do you think of the quality and performance of these? Have you tried any Viking cues before?

Any other cue brands you would recommend that meet these criteria in terms of price and quality?

Good Luck,
George
