Rediculous thing happened to me today....

I'm in my home town area and I decided to go play in one of the local tournaments. On friday night they are having a 9 ball tourny $25 entry. Race to 5. Starts at 7:00 PM.

I play all night until 2:20 AM and the bartender says we have to go. I need to beat my opponent 2 races because I have one loss already coming from the losers bracket.

I'm down 4-2 when we are told to stop. I agree right away to go because I don't want to get the place in trouble with the law.

Tomorrow they are having an 8 ball partners tournament that starts at 10:00. I'm not playing in that because I knew if I got to the end of the 9 ball I'd have to function on not enouigh sleep the next day. Being diabetic i try to avoid abusing my body with no sleep if at all possible.

I tell the bartender that is telling us to go that i'll just come back after the Packer/49er game tomorrow. My opponent is right there as I said this. And I know he will be there because he is in the 8 ball tourny.

The guy that is running the 9 ball tourny is gone so I guess it is up to us to decide when we finish it. The 8 ball will probably last until 9:00 to 10:00PM for sure. Earlier there wouldn't be any open tables.

I go home and didn't sleep very good. Been pretty sick with this terrible sinus cold thing that many people are getting. Lungs a bad and the sinuses just burn. Actually surprised I shot as good as I did.

Got to sleep around 5:00AM. Woke up about 1:00 PM and called my friend Tim and told him to ask them if I should come down earlier. It's about a 30 minute drive from my sons house. Tim told me the tables are all full, that it wouldn't make much sense to come down. I told him to tell the guy I would come down like I said after the packer game. And my opponent knew this anyway.

Game gets done about 10:00PM so I head out. Get there at 10:30PM.

I walk in and I set up a lesson right away with a young man that I talked to the day before. Then I went into the next room to let my opponent know I was there.

He hands me an envelope and tells me I got second. I looked at him and said real funny. I thought it was a joke. But he was dead serious.

I went to the guy that ran the tournament and he told me that my opponent was whining so bad that I wasn't there yet. So finally he said he gave him the money for 1st and second because he didn't want to hang on to it anymore.

It turns out this guy is just a customer that was helping and he doesn't even know or care what is done.

I talk to a few of our friends about it and they just shake their heads like they can't believe it. These same friends have had to put up with this crap for a long time. They're not surprised at all. How sad!

I'm in the bar part and in comes running my opponent and gets right in my face screaming and pointing his finger at me saying that it wasn't fair that I went home and slept while he had to get up and play in the 8 ball tourny at 10:00AM. So his reasoning that he gets the first place money is it isn't fair that I slept all day.

After this the owner came over to me. They call him Fuzzy. He wanted to know what all the screaming was about so i told him. I told him that the guy that was running the 9 ball gave my opponent the money for 1st and second place and my opponent just decided he should get first place because i got sleep and he didn't.

He just looked at me and said he was sorry. Somehow I don't think he understood how rediculous this whole thing was.

This is the sad part. First place was only $210. Second was $130. We're only talking about $80.

I have to beat him 2 sets. Races to 5 and I'm down the first set 4-2. I do get to break the first game. It's alternating breaks.

He just has to win one game out of 3 and it's over. I was really looking forward to the challenge. To me it wasn't about the money. I wanted to try and win. I drove 30 miles for this.

This guy is one of the better players in the area. A top master player. It also turns out he is a Master jerk and has done this for some time around the area. This whole thing was very classless.

I've known this player since he was a kid and even tried to help him when he was real young. I can't believe how he thinks and acts. Is it because he drinks too much? I don't know?

But I know one thing for sure. He doesn't seem to give anyone respect and certainly doesn't respect the game.

I travel all over the country and play in tournaments everywhere. The players are just great everywhere I go.

Then to come home and play in just one small tourny and have this happen.

This is one thing that really hurts our game. jerks like this.

It turns good people and players away from what could and should be so much fun.

I'm done venting. Sorry about the negative post.....

Might the problem be that the tourney's are scheduled poorly...so poorly that one has to stay past closing time to finish them? Might they not make 'em faster somehow?

This is EXACTLY why I rarely play in tourney's anymore. I have a life beyond pool. I like sleeping at night. I like getting home before midnight.

Next time, just lose on purpose and save yourself the hassles. There's a road lesson for ya. :)

Hello Geno,
I hope you are feeling better! I am sorry that happened to you. It is a wonder this guy can enter a tournament acting like that. I would not play any more pool at that place after the owner acted like he did about it. That is just my opinion.
You should have given him your cell number and told him to call you when he was ready to finish the match/tournament! You did not think it was going to be like that. He could not have said anything then. A split would have been better, since you guys did not complete the tournament. Some money beats no money though! I would be a little upset too!
Many Regards,

50/50

Hey Gene, Did you offer to split the pot the night before when they closed? Not the best way to end a tournament but in hindsight would have been better for you. Better luck next time, I agree you got screwed....There's No Place Like Home! lol.....

i woulda been pushing for the split night of event too.

you had the perfect support fact for it too: you were getting sick and who know how you'd feel next day?

as far as the tool giving out the $ the way he did...hardly surprising. peopls ars some dumb.

:withstupid:

I think you should go back again next week for revenge.

Too bad you couldn't of worked something out with the other player
so you didn't have to go back the following day. Could of done like a 60/40 split with the money since the odds were strongly against you to win.

Next time you'll know to stay out of the losers bracket.

I wouldn't be so upset about it...but I'm usually just happy if I break even.

40% of the first and second place money is $136. Gene got $130 for second. Splitting it this way wouldn't have made any sense imo.

Whoever the guy was, in a short race nobody has to beat Gene two short sets in a row.

The tournament director or owner should have made the decision to split the money right down the middle.

Down here in Louisiana, if the establishment has to close at a certain hour, many of the pool room owners will tell everyone to leave and then lock the doors to let the remaining players finish an event or match while they clean up.

Hey Black-Balled,
Happy New Year to you and the family. How is it going this New Year for you so far? Take care.

I am glad our pool hall never closes! Open 24/7 X 365, now that is what I am talking about. And if one of the pool halls down here closes at a certain time, they will do exactly as you said lock the doors and let you finish the tournament.
Many Regards,

Maybe this is a yankee thing?

I live and play pool in central Ohio, and I see this kind of nitty crap all the time? I play in these low entry fee, $8. tourneys that are suposed to be fun and when they lose they act like they just finished grade school, not everyone, but I see it happen a lot. I don't like to lose, but when I do, I say good game or good match, offer to shake hands and walk away. It seems like there are a whole lot of unhappy people out there that play pool. I know I shouldn't, but I kind of feel sorry for them that they lead such a sad life.

Every tourny I have been to locally,,if it can't finish that night. It's over.

Usually who ever is in the chair takes first money,,but it can be split if all agree to it. I've only seen it happen a few times,,and it seems the split is what happened.

Your situation sucks. It doesn't matter what happens in the time up to your rescheduled match. LMAO Maybe he had a bologna sandwich and you had steak, for lunch. And that is unfair too!!!!

Duh! That's the first thing I thought of...late night, can't finish...split the pot...go home and sleep! Screw coming back the next day, unless it was a 2-day tourney! jmo

And why would it be fair to split evenly? One guy is undefeated and on the hill for the win to boot and the other has already lost one match and most likely lose another?

I know you are showing some love for Gene but seriously....

50/50 split? That wouldn't be fair either unless both players agreed.

I have the solution.........

I have always liked this player and i have slept and woke up and I have the solution.

He only has to win one game to win. I'll meet him at the local bar and finish the match when he wants to in the next 3 days when he has slept.

I guess I wouldn't have wanted to play last night if I was him either.

I'm sure he will agree to it. Plus i think he had a few drinks last night. Not drunk but drinking.

There will be a happy ending to this story after all.:grin-square:

Brutal deal, and people wonder why pool is where it is. It takes one moron to ruin it for everyone else.

I can live the way Machino's opponent acted....this is a competitive game
and some people get hyper...it's hard to discuss boxing in the middle of the
ring.

But I give ZERO credit to the tournament director....
...and even less to the room owner...ultimately, the room owner is
responsible for rulings.

I DO agree that playing the next day made more sense than splitting.
