You're thinking of the AC-130 Gunship.

It's essentially a plane built around the GAU-8 Avenger 30mm Gatling gun, that fires from the front. You point the plane at your target, press the trigger and hang on -- try not to let your teeth get rattled out of your head.
It's not a cargo plane, like the AC-130 is, with holes cut in its sides for 20mm chain guns, that needs to bank to fire its weapons.
Both are awesome in their own rights, however.
