No, it wasn't a league or tournament match. It wasn't for anything other than pride. I was challenged. "You want to play me straight pool, race to 100", he asked. I took him up on it as I had never once played anyone in a match/game of straight pool.

I won 100-54. I made a lot of rookie errors (missing shots trying to open up the rack, usually) so my high run was only 16.

I actually did better in the department that I thought I would struggle in, and that was in setting up a decent break shot.

I liked it.....a lot. Thinking of dropping out of 8-ball, 9-ball leagues and getting in a 14.1 league (yes, we have one in the area).

Not trying to boast or brag as I'm still learning all the nuances of the game, but it felt good for me to meet the challenge and fare fairly well.

Thumbs Up

What a great way to start my day off this morning by reading your post & causing me to smile from ear to ear. Congrats on your first game plus a win.
Be careful about dropping out of your leagues. If you are talking about the 14.1 league in Hurst, the sign up might be closed at this time. You will have to wait until the summer league starts up. Anyways, good reading & Congrats once again.

...I won...

That is awesome - congrats. Keep the reports coming - I'll live vicariously through your entry to this until I get my own.

We have a league in my area as well. Figuring out how to explain to my wife that 3 nights a week just isn't enough and I need a 4th.

Well, maybe tonight will be a good time after all, it is our 10th anniversary and valentine's day - after 10 years, she's probably had enough of me...

14-1StraightMan and I play in a straight pool league at Volcanos in Hurst. Are you aware of it?

That ya'll play in it or that it exists?

I know of the leagues existence and I have Herman's phone numbers. I am going to try to get in for the next session.

I need a LOT more practice at the game though, so if any one of you two guys want to call sometime and set something up, my number is 817-999-3618.

Thanks.

The definition of "it"

That ya'll play in it or that it exists?

Didn't the word "it" get Clinton into trouble ? Or was that "is" ?

Come on Mr. Tony a 999 number ? If I call do I get a husky female falsetto promising a good time or a pool game ?

You call, I'll give you anything you want to hear !!!

Notice my number 999-3618. 3x6=18. 36 divided by 2 = 18. 3,6,and 999, 3, 6, 18 divisible by 3.

Maniac (too much empty time on my hands. HELLLLP!!!!!!!)

So, how is that break cue working on your straight pool game?

I haven't played in 32 years and have never won a game. I think it's time to try it again. I am trying to set up a one pocket game. Between two AZers for Fri. around lunch time. If you want to go for your second win. Let me know!

Congratulations on your win!

Larry

Thanks for asking, but we're taking the the oldest grandkids 4-wheelin' this weekend.

Keep me posted on future hook-ups.

BTW, I got the cue in on Saturday and with the exception of a few little nicks and dings in the grip area (from being used as a player), it is in great shape and rolls straight as an arrow!

Oh yeah, and I gave your number to a friend of mine that MIGHT call you about making him a cue.

Hey bud:

Sorry for seeing this only today. Congrats on your first match win! It feels great, doesn't it?

About how it went about -- you darn sure should feel good about setting up for the break shot, because that's one of the hardest things to do. Most new to 14.1 consistently mess that up ("mess" not to be construed as a demeaning word).

The break shot, on the other hand, is all about making the shot, and the fact that you missed a couple just means you were overly distracted by the rack itself (i.e. making sure the cue ball hits it, or hits it in the correct spot) and too much attention was drained away from pocketing the object ball. That's common. Just play more 14.1, and that distraction will disappear as you get used to executing break shots. In fact, as part of your practice, why not set various break shots up and execute 'em? (I.e. side pocket break shot; behind-the-rack break shot [my personal fav]; cut-down-the-rail break shot [where the object ball is against the long rail and the cue ball rebounds back into the rack]; head-spot break shot [where the object ball is spotted on the head spot and you two-rail the cue ball into the rack]; etc.) Some days, while just warming up, I'll do this -- execute break shots over and over, re-racking the balls each time whether I make the break shot or not. Just like short-rack rotation players practice their break, so too should 14.1 players -- with the obvious proviso that our break is less about power, and more about accuracy (we have TWO targets instead of just one).

Again, so glad you came out on top in an unsolicited challenge!

Good going, and hope to read more accounts like these from ya!
-Sean
