I have no idea what size boring bar I need. I have the 1/4" shank, indexable boring bars but it looks like I need a "real" bar.

THere's a huge list of them and I don't know what to get or really what I should be looking for. I'm looking for something to do joint pins with, but it also looks as if I need one for butt plate work. I know every cue supply site has them, but I'm looking at saving a few bucks.

This is just an example as there are several listed.

Shank - I get it
1/4
Min Bore - Smallest bore it will make
.180
Max Bore - Largest bore it will make
1.250
OAL - total length of bore
2-1/2

You get several.
For pin install and inserts.
For large pins ( min. .290 hole or so ).
For large hole tenons.

Anychance you can give me sizes on the other two? Also, what length do I need? Will 2 1/2" be enough and do I go with 1/4" shanks? Thanks Joey!

Anything you can do a joint pin with can also do a butt plate.
But you may need something longer to do butt sleeves with.

That will do pretty much everything you need to do. Chris sells a carbide tipped bar that is bigger and will go deeper for Butt Sleeves and such.

better known as conetip was selling a very nice .250 solid carbide 6" long boring bar awhile back. I don't know if he still has any or not but it would be worth dropping him an e-mail.

Ive got Neil's 6 inch solid carbide boring bar, and it works great. With the added length, you can bore deeper and use it for butt sleeves also. Ive got a new method now, but i got lots of use out of my boring bar and its still as sharp as the day i got it.
