What makes a cue hit nice?

Hey guys, looking for a little info and hoping someone here might be able to help. I found a Jackson cue that I really like the look of, its Ebony and Cocobola. The problem is that I want a cue that hits and has the same feedback as a Schon. I have tried about 1/2 dozen Schons from new to back from early 80s and they all have a certain feel and feedback that I really like, if I can only get this sound and feel with Schon I will buy a Schon, but I really like this Jackson. Will a Schon shaft make this Jackson feel the same? Any ideas would be appreciated.

Uh, how about contacting Schon and asking them to make you a Ebony and Cocobolo cue?

No. A Schon shaft will make your Jackson Cue probably not hitting like a Schon. Especially not if it is going about feedback. With your existing experience and expectations: Go and buy a Schon and you'll be happy.

Hi Kim, can you explain that, I don't understand exactly what you want to say. I would guess the cue makes more than 90 % of the hit. But indeed there are IMO some differences from one player to another that might affect the hit in principle, but how strong - I don't know.

- grip hand position
- grip strength
- bridge length
- stroke style

Do you mean this, or is it other stuff you mean?

It is too subjective of a question. What makes a cue hit nice to one may not be nice to another. The answer is, it depends who you ask. Most cues hit nice; some nicer than others. What hit are you trying to achieve? What Kim said is true. A certain cue may hit with a 'bing' to me but it may hit with a 'ping' to you and a 'pong' to someone else. You may not like a 'ping' and you may be looking for a 'bing'. Just becasue I say it hits with a 'bing' doesn't mean you'll think it hits with a 'bing'. Go buy a Schon.

Personally I think it's mind over matter. In many cases, if you don't have a mind, it don't matter. :grin:

Thanks for the reply's. Im going to give Schon a call tomorrow and see what they say as far as building a custom for me, ie., how long will it take.

While the construction methods and materials do make the basis of the hit, it's up to the player to decide if it is a good or bad feel.

One person may say that a cue has a good hit while another might not think it is good at all..........

Personally, I think a lighter cue (18 oz or less) gives better feed back to the hand because the CB strike is not absorbed as much be the mass of the cue.... that's just me.......

it's very subjective.....

I certainly do not expect a good cue to make me shoot any better whether it costs $9.98 or $8500.00. What I do know is that I have a nice table in my basement that I spent a lot of my hard earned $$ on to make it play exceptional and I also spent a lot of time on to make it look how I wanted it to look. As much time as I have been spending on my table and others, I want a cue that hits and feels good to me and I would also like a cue that visually appealing to me. I do not need a Schon, but so far they are the only cues that have the feel that I am looking for. I would sacrafice looks for feel but certainly not vice-versa.
 
I spoke with Evan from Schon this morning, he was very friendly and informative. We talked about a custom, unfortunately its about a year for a custom and he does not have any Ebony of high enough quality right now for a cue. I also asked if he could put a shaft on my Titleist, no problem on that. Then he found out that I am in his area and he invited me down to talk more with him, I will be seeing him in about 3 weeks.
 
if you're going to spend $700.00 to $900.00 for a good schon, that is what they go for

consider saving alittle more and shop the az forum for a tascarella, they've been selling @ less than $2500.00

and that's a freaking steale

The only problem is that I may need to take an awful long ride, I dont think I would buy a cue without hitting it first. I did consider buying a used custom or even ordering one from a builder here on AZB, but it all goes back to that hit and feel thing, I know what I am looking for but I cant put it into words. Thankyou:smile:

I have an original Hoppe, do those play nice if I send one down to Tascarella for a conversion? Would it play similar to a custom Tascarella?
