Anyone played with a McDermott cue with a Piloted 5/16x14 joint, and how did it hit?

I am curious if anyone here has played with a McDermott cue with a Piloted 5/16x14 joint?

I am also curious about how their nicer cues play (the American made ones with regular hard rock maple shafts, not the LD shafts that they have on all their cues these days)?

I am seriously considering getting the Mcdermott in the picture below (love the looks, but not sure if I will like the feel, balance, and hit of the cue).

I am told that it is a one of a kind prototype (with a 5/16x14 pin on it) that was made in 2004 (if that helps in any way to answering my questions about the hit, and balance of the cue).

I really love Joss cues, so if it hits anything like a Joss, then I am sure I will love the cue.

I would really like to know if they have a good balance to them, and if anyone here has had one with a 5/16x14 joint (not the standard 3/8x10)?

Thanks for your help.

I don't think it is a McDermott and I won't believe anything that the seller is saying.:sorry:

5/16-14 on a McDermott?:shakehead:

I'm pretty sure all production McDermott cues are 3/8x10 wood to wood joints. That's kind of their thing...

I'm sure you could get a custom made with any joint you wanted but I've never seen a McDermott with a piloted joint...

Have you asked McDermott?

There's a lot of very knowledable and experienced members here so if there's one out there, someone on AZB has seent it.

Good luck

The seller has a very high feedback rating of like 122 (100% positive), so I do not know why I should not trust his word. Seems like a really honest guy. He says that he has been in the billiard industry for 17 years. Anyways, back to my original question. Has anyone ever had a mcdermott with a 5/16x14 joint? Just curious how they play, and if they have nice balance? Or maybe someone can tell me if mcdermott cues (made in the last 10 years) have really good balance (the american made ones)? Thanks.

If that's an Ebay rating, it's not very many feedbacks....

I have seen two in the past that I installed tips on for different guys. I thought the same. But both had the green M clover on the butt cap. I was told from both guys they had them for a while because I never knew they used anything but 3/8x10 either.. << ED

Thanks for your reply. I emailed mcdermott pictures of the cue yesterday (to ask for some info about it). So even the stainless steal joint mcdermott cues have 3/8x10 pins? That is the only joint they ever used on their production cues? I guess I understand, because that would be like saying that Joss has made production cues with a 5/16x18 (meucci style) pin, or a 3/8x10 (wood to wood) joint, which has probably never happened (unless on a custom). But the guy is saying that the cue is a prototype that never went in to production.

No, not referring to an ebay rating. He is an AZ member here (with well over 100 ratings), and been a regular on here since 2009. I think that most people are honest god fearing people (or just good honest people). If they were not, then there would be quite a lot of dis honest buyers (lying about what they received from a seller in the mail), so I believe that most people are good and honest.

OH...I would believe him then too.

Thanks. So do you remember if they have good balance and feel to them? Are they known to be really nice playing cues? I have only used the really old ones from the 80's and early 90's. Thanks.

I didnt play with the cues I only installed tips on the shafts for the owners. The one guy I played in leagues with and he likes his cue. He said he had in for a long time but when I asked him because I nevr seen the 5/16x14 pin he never put a date on when he bought it...sorry...

If its a micky D it will have the 4 leaf clover on the buttcap with an "M" in the middle of the clover. And i believe they have had other joint pin options for quite awhile now. but not sure. Nice lookin cue whatever it is.

It sounds like the guy is pretty reputable but if McDermott had anything to do with it I'm sure they'll say so in their response. Even if it was a custom or prototype it should have the M clover and probably say USA or have a mark underneath. Every McDermott I've ever seen has the 3/8x10 but anything is possible with a custom. Correction: I have also seen their Quick Release joint but I think that is a proprietary pin size.

I shoot with a McDermott as my main player. I've hit with many different McDermotts and I will have to say that the consistency between cues is quite good. I like a softer hit than most and the cue I have definitely delivers. They will probably not hit as stiff as a Joss but I guess a piloted joint would change that a little. I like piloted joint cues but they definitely have a different hit and feel. The balance is really good but it could be a little more forward for my taste but most of them have weight bolts now, that can be adjusted.

I hope that helps and the purchase goes well either way.

Back in the 80's, I played pool with a guy that special ordered a D12 w/ 5/16 14 SS joint. It was an expensive option. Cue hit nice and had a good balance.

The pin design might provide a clue as to the whether McDermott was the manufacturer, or whether this was a production cue, or a prototype or a special.

I read your question as centering on the pin design. I am in the camp that believes the pin style does not materially affect play, unless the pin is of a style that chronically comes loose.

I do not know of any robot data that objectively tests the question either way.

Good luck with your purchase. It is an attractive cue.

McDermott EK - 1 has a 5/16 - 14 piloted... I have one and it'll be going up for sale this week...

Hit is similar to a joss, but with the different taper, a bit softer.

Joe

Ps I believe there is another one for sale on AZ as well...

pretty sure thats an ELITE cue... there is a big thread about it somewhere on here... since there is no markings other then the bumper.. how do you know the bumper is original to the cue.. somebody could have just stuck it on there to replace a lost one bacuase it fit..

EK-Series McDermotts

All the Ek cues had the 5/16-14 piloted stainless joint. I owned four of them and my first is now my daughters EK-3 Chess cue. I have owned many other McDermotts and these jointed cues have been the best players for me. They were made from about 1996 to 1999. Most will brag about the great playing high dollar customs, and I have owned a few, but for the money this is a very good cue. Does not feel like most McDermotts.
