Did you know paying as a gift through paypal is a risk to both the buyer and seller?

I've sent one or two invoices, when people were new to using PP and weren't sure what to do. Never thought about adding a buy button to an add because I don't want 10 people hitting the button and having to deal with all the refunds

No I haven't but will be looking into using them. Thanks for the heads up.

Click on "Send Money" then click "Create an Invoice".

Almost 100% of my business is done by sending invoices for my services. It works great.

They don't need a Paypal account to pay a Paypal invoice either. They can use any credit card or debit card if they like. You can even customize your invoices with your logo/avatar, business names, terms, etc.

I get it, but I believe it can be set up for a single item so that it can only work once if clicked on. I would have to check on that though.

If so, that could save a lot of controversy about who said they would take it first etc. If you click, you bought it.

I like the button idea, where on paypal is the link to create the button to put in my listings? I've been using paypal for years and never noticed a way to do that for forum listings.

On another note.... Joe made a good point. If the buyer pays listed price the seller should be expected absorb the fees. I calculate that 3% into my price up front. The tough part on the seller is when the buyer wants 10-20% off but still wants to use paypal.

That's my experience how it usually works.....buyer wants to negotiate the price way down (sometimes from an already fair asking price), then expects you to eat the fees on top of that or sometimes will request to send the money as a gift, thinking they are doing you a favor. Not worth the hassle of possibly having your account frozen imo. Tough to justify eating the additional fees in scenarios like this, especially when banks holding your money are only paying you 0.4% apy on it.

 i'm not....but if they really are watching these poll threads, like cuesblues fears, I'm open to receiving kickbacks

LOL I promise you I'm not a plant. Just a user who's gotten tired of missing opportunities because I won't take the risk, and too many FS threads have started making it just common practice to ask for gift payments.

and the poll is anonymous, if anyone else is concerned about that

That's what I love about these polls.
I can pick a side, build a case right or wrong, and defend it for no reason.
In this case however, I have upwards to $430 of "gift" money to be paranoid about.
It's good that this discussion got away from illegal Paypal activity, and over to the "buy" button option.
If I could put a "buy" button on a cue listing I might actually start listing cues for sale on AZ.
The "buy" button says it all, just buy it, or not, but don't bug me.

I don't mind that it's gotten a bit off topic....I assume anyone who hasn't read it yet will read the first post first when they see it

In the mean time, on the buy it now button, it's in the Merchant Services tab when you sign into your account. Click Create Payment Buttons For Your Website, then click the big blue Create Button button

In step 2 check Track Inventory, set the inventory to "1" and where it asks "Can customers buy an item when it is sold out?" select "No, don't let customers buy the item."

Looks like it will work just like Chopdoc suggested....if someone is willing to buy at the asking price :D

You gotta let PP make their share-otherwise it will eventually turn bad on you and probably everyone else.

They make nothing on gifts so if it's abused too much they will just not have it as an option

It doesn't post the button, just the code. As far as I know, we can't post direct HTML code into our posts. Unless, of course someone can tell me how to turn on HTML code? Bottom left hand corner of my page says:

That's not funny, we are all stuck trading cues we don't need for other cues that we don't need>>:scratchhead:
It's funny because it's true :p
Just like people figure paypal fees into their asking price, haggling and lowballing has become so commonplace in forums that most people build that into their asking price as well. Not just here, every forum I've been on.
Not everyone, of course....but enough that if haggling wasn't an option, asking prices would probably drop around 10% and as much as 25% in some cases

hmmm, I didn't get so far as to actually create a button and view the code....didn't think about what kind of code we can use here. Yeah, that's a problem

Sounds like a problem, oh well, back to the cash + trade offers

I don't mind the haggling, it's the 500-questions that get me.
At least an offer is an offer, and I'm always looking for cash + Meucci deals.
It's good way to end up with a lot of cool Meucci's.

IMO, answering questions is just part of the deal when selling stuff online, especially the more expensive pieces. It's harder spending money when you can't hold the item in your hand first

I get what you're saying, and I know there are lots of people who ask stupid questions and things that have been answered already in the thread.....but, just to play devil's advocate: if it's really, unreasonably bad, maybe you need to look at how much detail you give in the ad, and how good your pics are
(general advice, not directed at you cuesblues)

Side Note:
It amazes me, some of the pictures I've seen here. 3 pictures, picture 1 is perfectly clear, pic 2 is okay and pic 3 is so blurry it might be a whole different cue for all I can tell.
You've got a digital camera, picture 1 proves it works properly....don't take 3 pics and post them up no matter what they look like. Take 30 and post the best ones if you want a better chance at getting buyers interested

Have you tried using Paypal invoicing or a Paypal payment button?

.

I just sent my first invoice to a customer that doesnt use paypal. Thanks for bringing this up. I hadnt had a chance to look at all the options in paypal even though Ive used it for years LOL.

He may still end up sending me a check, but at least this is a simple way to make paying online an option if he should want to do so.

I will be adding payment buttons to future postings as well.

I've never actually started a thread in the Wanted/For Sale section, but I have well over 100-deals on AZ, many before the Itrader system, and many multiple deals with members.
I never felt that I had enough time, but now that I am unofficially retired I may have to start some.
Without AZ it could be hard to obtain my goal to sell a cue a week for 100-weeks/when I become eligible for Social Security>>
I have about 78-weeks to go, so far so good but with trades and all I keep ending up with about the same number of cues.
The only way I can keep count is by the number of storage space available in cases.
Without Paypal I wouldn't even know if I was making any money, I'm just shipping stuff.

Once you send the invoice you now have a record. You can mark it as paid in Paypal if it was paid outside Paypal and add a note about how it was paid I believe. You can also then send an email through Paypal to the customer as a receipt even if they paid outside Paypal. You can cancel an invoice as well if needed and the customer gets an email record of that as well. Paypal can export all your records and make your accounting and tax preparation easier. Paypal integrates with accounting and tax preparation services and software.

There are lots of other services that integrate with Paypal like scheduling software where people can pay for appointments for services and shopping carts. Lots of these are free or dirt cheap.

I still don't know if adding a button in a post works but it looks like some have commented about that. I'll have to go back and read some of this thread.

I think there are many options in Paypal the people don't use that would actually work quite well for them if they had a look.

I see your point and agree to an extent. To be honest, in general, I don't care. I did make a purchase through Paypal one time for my business for services provided by an individual/business. Wasn't a huge sum, $400. Turns out, it was a ripoff. I filed a dispute through Paypal and got a near immediate refund.

If I'm worried about 3 or 4%, as Chopdoc said, I'd build it into the price and not go the route of asking to be paid as a gift. As often as not, I've sent a Money Order for payment of something I've purchased here as I don't always keep a lot of money in Paypal (I don't do that many Paypal transactions as a seller, I'm not an Ebay'er). 3% is a reasonable rate when compared to credit card transactions. We use a service with our company and they charge 2 3/4%. If it is a small payment, we don't worry about it. If it is a larger sum, in the thousands of dollars, we add on the 2 3/4% to the total charged to the Customer.

Were I purchasing something here from a seller with solid iTrader comments/rating, I wouldn't think much of it. If it were an overseas transaction or someone without any/many ratings, I'd not purchase as a gift. If that were a deal breaker, then I'd not do the deal.
