Predator Break speed app...

I just bought a radar that mounts on top of my break rak...I took several break shots with both devices on in a quiet room on a 7' table.

I found the pred app to be .5-1.5 mph off...depending.

I found that it makes a good bit of difference exactly where u place the cueball...if its not in exactly the same place you can be off .5-1 mph just due to tiny placement error.

I found that I was actually breaking .5 mph faster than the app showed, overall, found the app to be within about .5mph of radar...and pretty consistent. Not bad for 5$ !!!!!!!!!

I just hated that my phone was going dead all the time, and having to push the buttons every break, and unlock my lock screen all the time.

I'm curious...what is it that makes you think it is the app that is "off" and not the radar gun? If you are not breaking directly at the gun (and I mean left-right and up-down...which means the thing better be mounted very near the table bed height), then you are going to get some cosine error depending on the angle that you are crossing the radar beam. It is entirely possible that this is happening, and very well could cause a change of .5-1.0 mph. If this were the case, I *think* your app would read slightly faster than the radar device.

Good question, I have the radar actually mounted on the break rak, and pointing exactly in the direction of the cueball.

I would put more stock in radar technology than I would in the iPhone app cause the radar technology doesn't take distance relationship into account, and therefore doesn't care...eliminating a major variable, also, the sound is less accurate and pinpoint determinable than radar. There are no variables with the radar...no sound, distance, table size variables...

What would make you feel like the iPhone app would be more reliable when it's so defendant upon user inputs and external factors which it cannot control...just wondering if I'm missing something?

No your probably right. The equation the app uses to calculate the break speed is relatively simple and because of that if any one of the variables used (cueball placement, etc.) are off it will throw off the calculation.

I've also found that the app can't handle speeds above 26mph that well. It tends to freak out. The whole app is also dependent on the quality of the phone it is on which is another factor that radar doesn't share.

I wish I had this problem...

Wow! I wish I shared your problem finding the limits of these devices!!!
The day I break 26 mph I'm gonna bust a champaign bottle on that pool table and start celebrating...

And, yeah, like I said earlier,...for 5 bucks, I think the app is awesome and a must have for anyone. Also, there's virtually no setup time, so it's still got its place anyway.

I've found the same problems with breaks over the mid-20's. I found that I had to "edit" the results a lot...until I figured out that its the volume of the sound itself that is causing the problems. Fast breaks result in loud bangs, too loud for the mic. I just put the phone on the rail of the next table over, which attenuates the sound enough that the app can process it properly.
