AZ Challenge Matches would be cool

I think it would so cool if some of the arguments on this forum were settled with pool challenge matches. Funny how all sorts of behavior is accepted but challenging someone to a game seems foreign. I had a couple people challenge me when I was helping someone with a pool stream and they were fun. I can't help thinking it would be fun. Someone could win money and the loser would be forced into silence about whatever issue it was and save the general membership from having to hear about it over and over.

I think it would be neat as well to see inclusions on the buy/sell forum of a willingness to play for an item or a discount. I know that if I was looking for an item, and the seller was kind of close to me, I would consider putting something extra into play for a chance at an extra discount or winning the item.

Anyone else think that would be cool? Like a requirement that if talks trash about someone else's game that they should be open to a challenge. That is probably going way to far but I know that whenever someone talks about how bad I play I all of a sudden want to play them. I'm just a former Rez teacher so I probably don't have the firepower to beat too many people on this forum but it still could be fun.

I have played about 8 or so challenge matches here in the kings challenge or whatever and won all my matches but know there are many many players in here who will torture me. There will not be many challenging Bartram, CJ, Danny Harriman and so on to get up and play because if they do they must hate money or got too much of it. I would like to see Lou and Barton play some one pocket for some cash and bragging rights. Maybe Bartram vs CJ is some ten ball and of course Schmidt and Harriman again would be epic.

Poolroom accountability would be so great. Nowadays people say whatever they want and knock whomever they please without being held accountable. I remember saying some unimpressive things about a local players game when I was young and one of the old guys making the point that I shouldn't bash someone else's game who plays considerably better than I did. Maybe it just made sense to me that there was some poolroom hierarchy when I was younger. There may not have been one but it would be a good form of motivation for some people to know that the better they got there would be fewer players telling others how bad they were.

More babble in the form of a little story... I was practicing by myself and a guy was talking to a group, loud enough for me to hear, about how I am a dog and no reason for me to practice since I don't gamble much. I stopped and said something along the lines of "well we can play." He shot back "what''s wrong with you. You want to steal, I can't beat you. Why don't you play _________(insert local champion) even if you want to play" while sounding and acting like I insulted him or something. It would be so idyllic if the poolroom culture would either force that guy to play or people reminding him that he is too weak of a player to talk smack like I was schooled when I was younger. I do like the thought though. In theory pool is set-up perfectly for challenge matches. Not enough gambling going on in most places. Seems like gambling really is the exception and not the rule anymore.

There is so many little things on gambling etiquette that people don't follow or don't know anymore. A night or two ago a guy from Ohio with a name synonomous with moped stopped into a local poolroom. Someone asked me why I didn't ask him to play and I said that I had to wait for him to ask me because I didn't have deep pockets. I had to explain that if I asked him he was going to want to play for $500 or something because he is a better player and knows it. If he asked me, especially since I only had a couple hundred on me, I could throw out that I would play for 25-30 a game. Basically if I asked I was asking for the entire room to know I was short-stacked which would probably make it even harder to find any sort of game in the days ahead. If you don't have a lot of money and you know the people in the room wait for opportunities to belittle players sometimes you have to be quiet. I guess it would be easier to be like the guy who talked crap about me and then tried to turn it against me anyways instead of trying to pay attention to situational stuff like being short money.

Probably just senseless rambling. It is late, early, or whatever so maybe I will just go to sleep and save you all from the probable brain bleeding if you read anything more from me now. If anyone is offended feel free to call me out and challenge me next time you are around Detroit or something:wink:

Lenny, John has been barking at me for over a decade. He's never going to play. As you know, he had a chance to play me for $20K a couple of years back and had a million excuses. Now he just continues to yap from the safety of his bamboo porch. I think he just enjoys going, "bow wow" or should I say, "ditou wa."

That is why we should forget the challenge matches and have a good old fashioned Meet & Beat,
locked up in a big room with no computers or Iphones...:smash:
You gotta get those NPR guys in there as well, but keep the snooker guys out, I hear they are pretty tough.

There are some that were done, the most famous one is Melinda vs cubc a few years back.

And there is a King of blah blah state section that is a bit dead where you can put forth challenges.

A neat thing that one person did, Tom McGonagle, he put forth a bet that his team would finish better than it did last year in some league nationals, against his signed book. I PMed him and put up another $30 against a pool lesson for my son which he accepted. Got a book and son got a lesson :)

I agree with the idea that lower level players shouldn't just rudely talk trash about players who can beat them all day. I especially don't get the mindset of that guy who walks by you saying "oh that guy's a dog" within earshot. That sounds almost like someone looking for a fistfight.

As far as grudge matches to settle arguments though, I dunno if it settles anything. Sometimes the better player can still be dead wrong (especially if the subject is not really about how to hit a ball but more like how to run a business or whatever).

Also most topics worth debating get like 10 people on each side arguing back and forth so we'll still see the subject come up over and over. At best we can hope one obnoxious guy loses a bet and has to keep off the forum for a year or something. But then the guy who beat him will probably act twice as obnoxious :)

Mike that sounds like it could be fun, however, judging how some people fly off the handle in text.....it might be a good idea to have metal detectors and armed guards at this event........just kiddin

I'd be down. There's one problem.. I can't make a ball. I wouldn't even want to watch me unless I'm drunk. From what I've heard, I'm pretty damn entertaining in that case.

It's a shame,Hang-The-Nine, that I had to just about give something away, to get a small bit of action.

I offered that bet to ten people, I'm not a complete fool and I barely got the amount of takers I wanted.

I've also made bets on my performance at Turning Stone. Again, I didn't get that many takers. I was even accused of basically stealing oin my Turning Stone bets.

Here's another crazy one.

Why don't they have local and regional AZ Billiard Tournaments, you must be a consistent poster to qualify and a national champion.

Let's see who can really play the game on here.

20 large? The best I got was a measly $500.

You got a link for that or was it PMed?

I will play any AZer any time, any place for the cash.

Oh God, I just hurt my back......:D

All we really need is more people to visit the King of the Hill forum. Not to be confused with the Over the Hill forums which many visit already :wink:

The $50 standard challenge bet is pretty low compared to how people toss around $1,000+ cues in the For Sale section. We should also have a rule of challenges to have it either streamed or recorded at least partially for YouTube for our amusement and criticisms.

Short skirts to be worn if possible if you are a woman. Or a man that dresses like a woman, I'm not judging.

I hope the AZ Fashion Police don't come after us. Those guys are meanies!

Oh Lou PLEASE stop twisting the facts.

1. I said I would give you 9/8 for $100 a game to see if I could out run the nuts. I have said this since sometime AFTER SBE 2010 which is the last time we saw each other.

2. On One Pocket.org you had a proxy try to high roll me for a 20k bet and I countered with a 10k offer and you declined.

3. Since then I have repeated the original offer that IF we are in the same place then you have a standing offer to get 9/8 for $100 a game and I guarantee $500 worth of action.

4. The very last time I offered it was prior to SBE 2013 because I thought you MIGHT show up there since you had attended the show before. That is a reasonable expectation but in no way was I demanding you show up and I didn't say it means anything if you didn't.

So, again, the offer is that IF you and I are near a 9ft table then you have 9/8 for $100 a game and I will freeze up $500. That's all, no other conditions. I only want to see if I can beat you giving up the nuts. I don't think anything of you one way or the other if you don't want to play. Nor do I think you should ever travel out of your way just to play me. My schedule is often known far in advance here as to what events I will attend and if it works outs then I will be happy to give you this game and provide you with some lunch money. You can plan ahead for 2014 because I will be at the SBE again.

Otherwise please don't continue to pretend that I am simply barking because I know it will never happen. If you think that then let's both send $500 to a third party and if I see you at an event and don't play then you get the money.

And it went EXACTLY as I said it did.

You act like I have hounded you for ten years.

So let's settle the timeline for the readers.

2002 - I learn an aiming system and talk about it on RSB and you dog me out of the gate relentlessly. We bark back and forth. Several months later we are both at an RSB tournament in Chicago at Chris' Billiards. I beat you playing one pocket. Neither of us says a word about matching up for money and we are cordial to each other.

We don't bark at each other online after that.

2004 or 03 - We see each other at the DCC and we chat a bit and you buy me a drink at the bar. Neither of us talks about playing for money, we are good with each other.

2010 - Super Billiards Expo - you come to my booth as part of another person's entourage, with you is Freddie Agnir, Jim Brennan and I don't remember who else, maybe Murray Tucker. All of you sit down at my booth and we have a discussion. You claim I never compare our cases to other makers and Fred corrects you. Other than that there is NO MENTION by your or me of playing each other. We are actually fine with each other at this point.

Sometime after that you go off again calling aiming system users fools and aiming system teachers charlatans. At this point I offer you 9/8 as stated above. And since then I have been consistent on that point.

So please stop twisting the facts Lou. The facts are you have seen me three times in 11 year and all three times you have NOT asked to play. And all three times there wasn't any bad blood between us. In fact after the RSB match which I luckily won despite barely knowing the rules to one pocket I was highly complimentary of not only your game but also your character. Sad to say that I was unfortunately wrong about your character it seems. Which is a bummer because you are genuinely nice in person.
