Like the title says... Do you prefer a Hard Shelled Case or a Butterfly Case, and why? Also, why don't you like the other style as much?

If your particular case has a feature(s) that makes it better than the rest (for you), please feel free to explain what those are and post pictures of your beauty.

There is also an "other" option if you have a case that does not fit either of these categories.

Looking forward to your thoughts.

Cheers,

Mike

Butterfly Baby!

I got my first butterfly case a few months ago. There is so much more room for everything. Only in a butterfly case can you put towels, glasses case, shooting glove, etc. right in the middle of the case - just throw 'em in.

I'm willing to give up the extra protection of a hard case for the convenience, roomyness and light weight of the butterfly.

I completely agree. A good butterfly case is so practical. I've been using the same 4x8 Porper butterfly case for 10 years+. It's still in good shape and the pockets are easy to get things in and out of (unlike a custom case I had from a Florida maker). Plenty of protection unless you plan to joust or pound something with it.

I actually like them both and i use them on different occasions.

If i'm just shooting pool for certainty with a close friend and won't need to show anyone any cues then i just use a simple 2x4 tube case. Holds my players, breaker and jumper. Front pocket with enough space for small towel, chalk, cue holder...

The Envelope Case on the right is the 2x4.

If i'm out for the weekend playing with a few friends then i'll bring my 3x4 Tube Case, can hold 2 players and a Breaker plus a jump and space for my basic stuff. Holds an extra cue just in case friends wanna try them.

When I travel to other cities or have cues to sell to friends then i'd use my 4x8 Butterfly.
Holds my playing set plus 2 more cues that i'd sell or show friends. Front pockets holds all that i need plus my passport and earphones. Very comfortable to carry around and light.

Jive,

Not bad for some ho-hum cases just lying around the house.

Seriously though... gorgeous stuff!

Who made the cases in the 3rd and 4th photos? The butterfly has a really cool pattern to it and the metal accents on the 3rd case class it up really nicely.

I'll be in the market soon and just can't decide which way to go. Once I decide on a style, it will be a bit easier to pick a maker. I'm currently leaning towards JB, Castillo or Murnak. Murnak has some great exterior designs, you can't beat JB's interiors and Castillo... well... you can't really go wrong with a Castillo, right?

Thanks for your input!

If by 3rd Case you mean the 3x4 it's made by Armor Case here in China. Yang is the case maker. I'd say he stands alongside the best case makers around.

The Butterfly case is from JB Cases. I personally thing JB makes the best butterfly cases.

Bang for buck i'd say JB always.

in my case (no pun intended), it's more like all of the above. From Simple velvatine sleeves with dividers that hold one cue to 10X20 Porper style dealer cases on

wheels with multiple pouches and cup holders, and in between, I have an original Jay Flowers 2X4, an original German Instroke Leather Cowboy 2X4, and another

of the new Leather InStroke Cowboys. an old German InStroke Glove Leather Butterfly that holds 12B about20S , a heavy canvas Porper butterfly 12X24, a Felini

1X2, a leather It's George 1X2, an old Brunswick flip top 1X2 and probably a dozen more cases of various types that are insignificant. Probably could fill all the

cases a few times along with 200-300 house cues with a bunch of antique brunswick, some Titlists, lots of Valley & Dufferins, and a complete woodworking &

cuemaking shop. I guess I'm a borderline hoarder, lol

I changed to a butterfly recently. it's lighter and holds more then I can carry. I love it.

Well,

You don't have to choose one or the other. With us you can have both. You can purchase the butterfly with two half shells and then when you travel you simple put the shells in covering the cues and when you just go to the pool room you leave the shells out.

I am currently making a couple of these for some bonafide champions who leave their tube cases at home and use butterfly cases when they travel. Both of them were ecstatic when I said I could make them a hard-shelled convertible butterfly case. Maybe I should called it the beetle case instead :-)

Well... That's just a little bit of genius right there, Sir.

I will have to work directly with you when I am ready to pull the trigger. This is a great idea that I may not be able to pass up. Now, if we could find a way to make one of the ends of the case rigid and put some type of a rubber/metal foot on the outside, so it would stand upright on it's own, we would have the ultimate case. Holds as much as, and works like, a butterfly... but with a rigid bottom, the convertible option and your interior, it would hold cues while standing on end and have hard-shell protection for travel!

Things to ponder, indeed...

Jive is ahead of you and has asked for that very thing months ago which we are about to get to work on.

Well then... A big thanks to Jive!

Maybe it will be done around the time I'm ready to put my order in... #2 off the line would be fine by me!

I'll share pics and review when i receive that case. I've basically mentioned the things that you have and then some.
I don't really need the hard tubes to be removable since i want to use this case when i travel so i need it have extra protection cos I bring it onto trains and planes where it gets placed everywhere..so Durability and Protection is of utmost importance for this particular case then comes Comfort of carrying it around.

Pictures...

JB,

It would be nice to see some pictures (internal and external) of these hard-shelled butterfly cases you're making once you're done with them.
