WPBL (Bonus Ball) - Hohmann 60 Ball Run on Youtube

Match 3 between the Minnesota Outlaws and the Phoenix Fire is now ready for viewing. We're hoping this will quickly erase any and all doubt as to the validity of the game of Bonus Ball. Thorsten puts on one of the best performances any of us have ever seen, and Darren quoted this match as "some of the best pool he's ever seen".

This is a rough live cut with temp intro and outro graphics (even has a typo at the start). The real version of the production will later be cut with the show opener and such, as soon as those assets are ready (we had to wait for the season to get underway to start editing those aspects).

As for our site, the people in charge of that are hopping to have it fixed in a day or two. Fingers crossed.

Thanks!

A few quick notes:

We are doing a soft launch, which means that we are ironing out the bugs and adding features each week. Other than the web disaster, the rest of the bugs were easy fixes, so we're adding new features already for week 2.

- Week 2 will include more production features, such as the players being miked, ref through the PA system, 4 more cameras, live stats, and adjustments to the overhead cameras (zoomed out a bit more).

- Week 3 will be the big one, where we add the show intro, team intros, music, and start adding drama with opening and closing light shows.

- Week 4 will bring the final touches, and by then we should be good enough to submit to networks.

The ball girls need to watch what they are doing, at the 4 min mark one almost got in the way of the cueball.

I like how the sign was setup to light up with the color of the ball they are shooting next, gives a bit of a clue to those that don't know what the rules are.

I thought the bonus ball had to go in your pocket? at 2:08:50 he shoots it into the white pocket?
Anyone know the rule?
Nice run, just wondering about the rule.

If you shoot it into your opponents pocket, you have to make the cueball contact the rack. Forces the players to strategize whether to take on the harder pot into their own pocket, or risk shooting and playing into the rack.

Complete rules:

PS. The only rule that hasnt been updated in the rulebook is the swap of orange and purple during the racking process. I changed this the day before the launch to eliminate the wing ball issue.

I guess Hohmann is not minding the tight pockets

I wish nothing but the best for any venue genuinely trying to further our sport. I just hope ALL future events with all tournaments can be held by people coming together and working it out. This is what is best for the sport, the players, the fans, and the promoters. The smaller tourneys will just have to work around the bigger ones obviously.

I watched some of the early matches before the regular season on youtube and thought they were great. The video was great, the commentating ok, camera angles were good, etc... The streaming issues will be a thing of the past, people just like to whimper (including me sometimes). But I would suggest having the bonus ball the same color with a silver stripe or something to make it easier to view. It gets pretty cluttered looking with the dark purple balls sometimes.

Thanks,
Kevin

Thanks Nathan, I wondered if that was the case..

nice

....a fine performance by Hohmann ..... a very nice production, nice video quality, good optical esthetics, and sincere wishes for prolonged success......

FWIW, first impressions:
- nice production
- the game moves at a good pace
- the players delivered
- good decision to not use a telestrator
- good job by Double-J
- Toast and Ralf on the same team? Stacked!
- there are certain match-ups I'll keep an eye out for, like the BundesOutlaws vs. the Dice (and I'll probably watch Earl sometime).
- with the players mic'd up, a broadcast delay might come in handy...
- just a hunch, but were I a non-pool playing kid, I'd say it's conceivable BB would interest me in pool more than, say, televised 9-ball.
- sure, there are things I wonder about, like the length of the season, but those will work themselves out

Obviously, a heck of a lot of effort has gone into this. Congrats for making it this far and best of luck to all concerned. It's a jungle out there.

That video helped me understand the whole BB concept much more clearly. Thanks for that.

And WOW...what a run!

I haven't watched the whole thing yet, just the first few matches. Nice production! A moments of "what to do", such as with the girls, but that's expected. I like the sports theme (vs.). The jersey, not so good to look at, but I can't really think of anything better. The emotion from the players were there. The table looked fast! The players had some speed control in the first few matches I saw.

The girls, nice to look at, but maybe find something more to do? Better shoes, perhaps too.

The game itself, I'm not sure yet.

Overall, good so far. I'll have to finish it up tonight.

Comment on the match. Kennedy's stroke pisses me off. It's part of the reason why I stopped. It makes me want to grab a cue, snap it in half, and stab myself in the eyes, every time he shoots.

I hope this works out. Good luck on the venture! It's definitely moving forward.

Ya know, I'm an honest person with my opinions, sometimes branded a Hater.

I wasn't impressed at all with the Grand Opening of BB and there is still a couple of issues that are stuck in my craw, but I am watching this and have to say that I am thoroughly enjoying it so far. I tried my hardest to ignore this thread but caved in.

I have no idea where that will take my future opinions on it but I am catching onto the rules a bit better.

Very excellent playing in this match. I'm kind of partial to Ralph and Scott and really like what I see of Manny.

I guess its a bit of God grant me the courage to change the things that I can and the serenity to accept the things that I can't.
