Road Report: The Jarrod Clowery Benefit Tourney Held at Snookers, Providence, RI

I had the distinct pleasure of attending the Jarrod Clowery benefit tourney that was held this past Sunday at Snookers in Providence, RI.

Jarrod Clowery is one of the top amateur pool players in New England and had the great misfortune of being at the Boston Marathon finish line along with three close buddies, when the two bombs went off.

All three of Jarrods friends lost legs in the blasts and he, himself, suffered severe injuries including burns, hearing loss, and many, many pieces of shrapnel consisting of bb’s, ball bearings and nails.

Promptly at 1 pm, the event got underway featuring a very stirring, emotional, and dare I say, at least R-rated speech from Mr. Clowery. Anyone who may not have known previously, quickly became aquainted with the fact that this guy is much tougher than the many nails that still remain in his body.

Worth noting is that while Jarrod was welcoming everyone and expressing his heartfelt gratitude for all of the help he has received thus far, he saw fit to make a special announcement to acknowledge Mike Dechaine who he said spent over 8 hours one day with him, bedside at the hospital. That in addition to donating hundreds of dollars out of his own pocket *and* personally selling out all one-hundred of the $20 raffle tickets for an impressive equipment package donated by Mike’s sponsor, Predator. Careful with all of the do-gooding, MD, you have an image to maintain.

This very nice donation by Predator (a $2000 value) included a BK2 break cue, an IKON-8 player, and a Predator 2x4 case and was won by a young lady named Cameo Moy.

The tournament had 68 players including some well known pros.

The rails were crowded but action was almost non-existent, I’m sure, largely to do with why we all were there.

AZ’s very own Kerry McCauliffe (KMRunout) did extremely well in this event, ending up, I believe, either 3rd or 4th, but it was ultimately taken down by an undefeated Richie Britt. Second place went to Mike Keith. Snookers owner, Steve Goulding, stayed in the mix ‘til close to the end, as well. EDIT: Steve Goulding finished 3rd.

Yours truly, the kickin’ chicken, put forth a valiant effort making it to hill-hill in the match that would have had me playing for the hot-seat but, alas, I went and rattled the 9 while attempting to bank a side pocket whistler thus selling out to my opponent leaving him an easy roll in for the victory. Woe is me. :o

There were various raffles taking place along with other clever ways to make a donation to this very worthy cause. An fyi, Jarrod is a carpenter so while the injury he sustained would be a great challenge to *anyone*, it is even moreso to a man who relies on his physicality to earn a living.

For anyone who hasn’t been lucky enough to make it to Snookers, you are really missing out. This place should serve as a model for all other rooms to emulate. Great equipment, extremely friendly and attentive staff, and a quality of food that you rarely, if ever, find in a pool hall. Great job!

I would again like to offer my sincere best wishes to Jarrod in his ongoing recovery effort. It will take some time, for sure, but I have zero doubt that he’ll be making it back to where he needs to be. This is one tough (and funny!) son-of-a-gun.

Steve Booth (1pocket.org) was there and due to some sort of a clerical mixup, he didn't get to play in this event. As a result, he had a lot of extra time and he spent much of it taking pictures which he is immensely talented at so maybe we’ll get to see some of those shots soon.

In the mean time, you'll have to make due with the very limited, less-professional ones I’ve posted below. Plus the top one with Jarrod on the street in Boston - not sure who should be credited for that photo.

best,
brian kc

Wow! Great trip report. Jarrod looks great. Mighty easy on the eyes! :grin-loving:

As are you, Kickin' Chicken! ;)

Thanks for sharing the cool pics. :)

Yes it is Regina

Wow! I did not know she played. I'll tell you one thing, her meatballs are the best I've ever had in my life. It's almost worth the drive just to go up to Snooker's and have a nice dinner. Plus, the pool room is really a nice one, probably one of the nicest on the East Coast.

I agree Snookers really stands out! I was there one Wednesday night when they had their weekly 9-ball tourney -- over 50 players on a weeknight!

This is owner Steve Goulding who finished third in the tournament Sunday.

Steve Gould can play some for sure. I've seen him in action before myself.

Actually, one of *the" best finals I'd ever been to was at the old Snookers. The finals between Ginky and Allen Hopkins was pure pool poetry in motion. Neither one of them made an error. It came down to the break. All of us railbirds were mesmerized. I'll never forget it. Our very own Joe Tucker came in third. Great tournament!

Brian,

It was very nice re-meeting you and talking with you at the tourney. I love your cue!!! Overall I had a great time and shot pretty well. Steve Goulding the owner was actually the one that knocked me out. He played quite well but we both ended up trading mistakes at the end. With a couple of unfortunate exceptions, everyone seemed to be in good spirits, really enjoying the day, and showing great sportsmanship and support for Jarrod.

I like the tourney's at Snookers and I try to make it down most Wednesdays. You can't beat their weekly tourney for $20 and strong competition.

Also, I think Marc Dionne did a great job running the event...it clearly raised some serious money for Jarrod. I'll look forward to the next one, hopefully not because of some tragedy though!!

PS in your last picture, you can see my friend Samantha in the back ground. She got 7/8th. Out of 67 people that's a very impressive finish! She shot great and will go far!

Hi Kerry;

It was real nice to see you again and to get some practice in together. Glad you liked my Olney - you seemed to adapt back over to 'high deflection' seamlessly.

And I agree that Marc Dionne did a great job running this tournament, for sure.

Hope to see you again soon.

p.s. yessir, Samantha and I talked a few times Sunday and I know she had to take some time off but she does seem to be right back in the swing of things. hopefully, we will be hearing about her finishing high in many more future tourneys. she def has some game.

It always comes back around to food, eh JAM? :grin-square:

This gal, Regina, who by the way I recognize from the pics as being a real live wire at the tourney, where does she do her meatball magic? I'm guessing maybe she has a restaurant in Providence or does she work there at Snookers?

btw, while there I had their "Mediterranian Plate" from the app menu and it was perfect.

assorted olives, celery, carrots, cucumbers, red onions, tzatziki sauce, hummus, and tabbouleh. served with pita triangles.

I'd like to have that again for lunch today. :)

You lucky dog! Now I'm hungry, and it's only 7:30 a.m. :o

Regina is Steve Gould's wife, the owner, but I think you probably knew that. ;)

Those meatballs are to die for. Man, oh, man!

Gallery of photos from the tournament. Great to meet you Kickin! And real nice write up.

Sent from my phone not sure if the
Link will work lol

Steve

Thank you very much. It was great to finally get to say hello.

your pics are wonderful.

I especially like Jarrod planting a big fat kiss on MD.

for anyone reading this there was, what I feel, a very funny moment when Steve was telling me how he didn't get put into the brackets so, therefore, couldn't play in the tourney and he added the fact that it wasn't so terrible because "Nine ball really isn't my game" and I looked him straight in the eyes and said, "Really?".

We both had a good chuckle...

Oh, you know, it could be Goulding. Now I'm confused. :embarrassed2:

Best menu in any pool room I've ever seen in my life. Wow!

I wish we had a room in our area like this!
