Thanks, my youngest son is only a few blocks away from Amsterdam's and am looking forward to checking it out. I will be playing off the wall since flying with a cue is still a PITA.

I used to live in Jersey and made a lot of trips to the City. Been over 20 years but it doesn't change much.
Manhattan changes quite a bit, actually. If your last visit was 20 years ago, there have been a ton of changes. Restaurants come and go. Clubs change names a lot and, for what we care about, pool rooms change a bunch too. Amsterdam Billiards used to have 2 locations, one each on the Upper Eastside and Upper Westside. Both are now closed. The current ABC location used to be Corner Billiards(ABC consolidated both rooms to this location). Society Billiards used to be a dive; Broadway Billiards. now, it is a gorgeous room, run by real players. The venerable den Chelsea Billiards became Slate- a sports bar/pseudo club type of poolhall. A far cry from what it used to be. A lot of other rooms have closed.
To the original poster- the nicest rooms are Amsterdam and Society. ABC is all Gold Crowns and Society is all Diamond tables (9ft and 7 ft). The are both in the same vicinity, about 7 blocks away.
if you happen to be on the Upper East Side, Eastside Billiards on east 86th is an ok room too.

(I'm usually only ever in the city on business, and since I live far away [70 miles due north], I'm constrained by the MetroNorth train schedules that determine what I do when my business day ends. However, next week is a holiday week, and it should be slow, so the "all work and no play" thing can be pushed aside.)
BTW, Eric's info is dead-on -- there've been huge changes in the city since I moved back to the NY area (from the military) in 1990, and I watched it happen from the sidelines up here in the 'burbs.

Thanks for the info Eric my boy landed a once in a life time internship for the summer and is living in Stuy town so he is close to all these rooms. At 20 years old he shoots ok but his interest for the game is just now starting to show.
DD I like that idea and used that method last summer when I went to checkout ShootingArts and Joey A at Buffalo's. Manhattan is one of the places that is a must see. Cuebuddy> has to have sharp knives also.
Sean I may or may know my schedule as the week progresses. If I can nail the day I am going to the pool rooms I will contact you.
Thats a big Walla Walla, I grow some big Turnips also..

Even a random dive in the East Village will have better burgers and fries than Fuddruckers, Five Guys etc- Try the Pourhouse at the opposite end of Amsterdams block for a quick lunch

Folks from various not-as-cultured parts of the country would probably "steer" you (forgive the pun) on what places they visited in NYC that "had a good burger."
A little advice -- while NYC has some of the best steak houses and burger joints in the world, you don't go to NYC to have a burger! I'd suggest to anyone visiting NYC to take the opportunity to break out of the uncultured American mold, and have yourself some truly worldly cuisine. NYC offers cuisine from around the world, all in one place. Italian, German, Indian, Greek, Mediterranean, African, etc.
For those that think the Barilla pasta with Ragu sauce is "Italian," you'll have an awakening when you come to NYC!

last time i was there -maybe 3 weeks ago- the waitresses were more than acceptable-Anyone of them would have been far and away the hottest thing in ALL OF Tunica this week and im not kidding at all. If Daz's GF had stayed i couildnt say that but i put up on FB and likely soon on my Blog

I was not suggesting a diet of Burgers-only those were even better in NYC by far and a pool player staying in the city for a while is going to have one or two lunches like that.
a friend of mine from Fla loved 'Eataly' on 24th and 5th. But like i saw he is from Fla and i have never found good Italian there. Even relocated NY'rs seem to forget how to cook once in Fla.

this is pretty amazing that if you find yourself one day looking for a quick bite on the fly, this cart, yes I said cart, is actually rated like #20 restaurant in NYC by Trip Advisor. how is that even possible?

grays papaya is another great cheap eats in the city specializing in various themed hot dogs and tropical fresh juice drinks.
then there's zabars on 83rd and broadway. or is it 82nd? when in nyc, I never miss going there at least once. :thumbup:
I can make recommendations on spectacular upscale joints, as well. :smile:
but at the end of the day, tastes in food can be as subjective as which tip to use.
If you want, I may be able to make it into the city and can bring you a cue to use.

Sean our family are all foodies(I hate that term). Where ever we go we hit many places that have been on the food network or that have been showcased in magazines.
My oldest son graduates next year from Cornell as a food scientist and just spent five months in Europe chasing the best food in nine different countries. We will be walking the Big Apple stuffed
