So apparently I'm a D player

You are not a D player (based on the info provided).

D players don't beat the 9 ball ghost in races on a 9 ft table......ever

Work on your break and check to make sure the rack is tight.

Also try the BU exams Dr. Dave recommends for accurate "speed" gauging.

Do the 10 ball ghost drill once or twice a week. Your average will come up from 30 pretty quick.

I think that when most people say "10 ball ghost" they mean smash break, everything stays down, and you get BIH. If you run out you get a point and if you don't run out (called 10 ball) the ghost gets a point.

There are other ways that count a point per ball and two for the 10 or some such but I think it's less common.

I don't know your break speed so it's hard to say. Just focus on accuracy on the break the gradually add power.

Assuming in 10 ball - you break near the center of the table, The second ball in should be heading towards the side pocket.

If not you are either not hitting the 1 accurately / full
If short of side pocket - not hitting hard enough
If long of side - hitting too hard

High and low will effect second ball direction as well (experiment with your equipment)

Once you get that ball consistently moving towards the side you can adjust accordingly.

****** The statements above are only my experiences and by no means imply I know everything

....there's always at least 1 know it all per thread... ;)

Embrace your D.
Work on becoming a C.
Master C level, but represent D.
Ask for weight from absolutely everyone claiming to be a C, telling them you stink, and rob them blind.

Take you winnings, buy some nice things for yourself and go out and eat a nice fat steak.
Repeat.

Na nobody does this...

Go find a C player and play him a race to whatever. If he cleans your clock then you're a D player. If, however, you clean his, then you're at least a C.
We've all had to start somewhere. :)

I honestly feel these "ghost" ratings vary wildly based on if the shot after the break is ball in hand or not. I don't think any ghost rating can be compared to another if the shot after the break is ball in hand versus play it as it lays because that changes the initial break shot to such a huge degree.

LOL.
In the grand scheme of things.
I know strong open level players, and guys who are middle ground.

You know who wins the most money by far?

The guys who suck, who NEVER EVER get too good.
They start to play good, but they never ever leave their shitty rating.

They clean up big time.
It's not even close.

Great player gambling with other great players or players who suck = revolving bank account.
They never get ahead in the long run. (with the exception of the greats)

Guy who plays ok who represents himself as sucking big time, all the time.
CLEANS UP, and has money to blow. A LOT of money.

No comparison. Too different worlds.

I guess its all about beeing honest with oneself (and not entirely with others lol).;) I certainly do not think of myself as a great player and I know where my weaknesses and strengths lie. I was somewhat suprised by the outcome of this test though. Guess the 10ball ghost is a different animal from the 9ball ghost. My game does need some work, but overall I feel good about where I am right now. I do enjoy a little bit of gambling, and now I have proof that I am a D player, what a goldmine this can be.

Thanks for the laughs man, appriciate it.

Being a D player has huge advantages, you play bad enough to find action and good enough to win. Perfect!!!!

I've been feeling really good about my game lately, defeating the 9 ball ghost in races to 10 several times, and coming close when I didn't so I decided to try the 10 ball ghost test. Couldn't find it before I went out but I seem to remember it was 10 ball ghost race to 10, scratches count -2 and all balls pocketed counts towards your score. I must add I rarely play 10 ball. edit: (table specs Brunswick Crown 9foot, slightly less than 4,5 inch pockets)

So I'm using the magic rack and on my first break try to pocket the second ball in the side. I park my cueball in the center of the table and it gets kicked in the side pocket and I come up dry on the break. The 2 ball is clustered up with 3 other balls and the one is on the other side of the table. I pocket the one, contact the cluster but the two is not makeable. Score -1.

Next rack is a copy of the first down to the last detail, cue ball kicked in 1 and 2 on opposite ends and the 2ball clustered up. The outcome is exactly the same, I make the one, hit the cluster and come up with no shot. Score -2

I don't usually pattern rack, but now I make sure to put the 2 in a different spot. The break is much harder this time, I park the cueball center table, again its kicked but does not scratch. Would you believe it, the 1ball is on a rail with another ball frozen to it and neither can be pocketed!? This has got to be the cruelest roll in the history of pocket billiards. Rack 3 and still my score is -2.

I have this same sh*t happen to me every time I try these drills. I've quit doing them out of frustration because of it.

FTR, I found myself bouncing from a solid C player to the occasional B- player, and I can tell you that if you've beaten the 10-ball ghost, then you could whip the pants off of this 'ol man!!! You are probably a solid B player at worst.
