Leather Wrap Cutting Jig

Hi,

Last month I purchased one of Lee's adjustable leather wrap templates on his Christmas Special. Today I used it for the first time and cut 2 wraps. I was so impressed with the results of the wrap jobs an the accuracy of the jig that I felt I had to comment on this tool.

In the past I have carefully measured with an aluminum ruler and made a measuring mark with a pencil on the ruler and tried to make my transfer of the measurement and close as I could. I am not that bad at transferring a measurement but I realized that when ever I cut a leather I would always try to factor in a slight stretch factor.

With this new template I snapped the jig between the wrap steps & locked it, placed it on the leather and cut it on both sides. Because it is the exact size of the wrap you don't have to slide it down to meet the length mark, which is another chance to blow the transfer of the measurement a hair.

Both wraps were perfect and I did not over think anything concerning the leather size as I trusted the tool. I also noticed that the radius curves on this template seemed to work better than the other template I was using. I always had a slight overlap angle at the A- Joint cut that had to be trimmed square slightly with a scissors. This was always a pain in my ass and had to try to factor in how much to cut in this area to make it work.

With this new template both edge areas came out perfect. I made my two long razor cuts in the my wrap jig and when I installed the leather the fit ups at the steps were amazing. I had full confidence of repeatability after the first one.

If you are going to buy a leather wrap cutting template, this one is the cats ass.

I have to agree with you. The template works great and the Christmas special was a steal.

He's out of business, so only used ones will be available, if even that.

I've always heard that the DeAngelo is the best one...and that it works on all styles of butts and butt tapers...and really easy to use...

Lee's template, or cutting jig, was only that, just a jig to cut the length to fit the wrap channel, it did NOT cut the seam, which a deAngelo, or unique jig does. There are many ways to cut the length, but only a few to cut the seam accurately, Lee's jig doesn't do that.

Lee copied others inventions, usually much cheaper. He did come out with a few original innovations that, although most weren't up to snuff, a couple really worked well and this is one. With it's use there is no measuring which needs to be correct to within a 1/32 and aligned perfectly or the ends will either be short/long or misaligned when wrapped around the cue. With it's use you merely place it in the wrap channel, extend it's halves to fit the channel and then tighten a lock screw, then take the jig and place on the leather and cut both ends. No measuring to get wrong and a perfect fit every time.

Both the Unique and the D'Angelo do a great job of making cutting the seam easier and the Brienna does a great job making the end cuts easier both of which need done perfectly for a good leather install.

Glad to hear that they work well Dick. I bought one but haven't used it yet.
Not much call for leather where I am and not so much into leather myself.

But ya know, thats all you have to do is use it a few times and it will pay for itself.

If I remember, they were approx 65. Could be wrong. The thing weighs a ton so it won't be breaking anytime.

You ride your bike without leathers?
Ouchy should you ever have to take a slide. :)

No, I have leather pants but they look to Homoish so never wore them.

Strangely enuff, I have never been in an accident on the street. I used to have an 8th mile Flat Tracker that I went for a few skids on or over the bars.

I rode in a Wall of death for many years and had a few good ones too.

Darcy, I thought that you made one of these jigs. I'm going to keep mine. I'm sure that they will last a couple of hundred years. I have at least 50 wraps plus cork so maybe I should get busy and start advertising.

I did make one, stupid me
I used my least favorite template and it has rounded edges,
So it doesn't fit perfectly in the wrap channel.
Maybe I Shoukd make a bunch and sell them?
