Mean Spirited?

Very few people here are mean-spirited.
But several do not understand how to keep 'debate' and 'argument' separate in their mind.
They cannot debate something without feeling like they're in a fight,
and disagreeing with them = an act of war.

Some people think of themselves as reasonable, still can't resist the occasional potshot
now and again at specific targets. It's purely a self-indulgent and emotional thing.

Then there's arguments that simply happen from poor communication.

For example, say I'm a new guy who just visited the forum. I read your sig, English, for the first time.
The bottom lines are Don't blindly follow anyone, do your own research.
The next line ends in I'm not 'certified' as an 'instructor'.

Usually when people put quotes around words, but they aren't quoting someone,
it's to indicate skepticism and derision. Combine this, with the line above that encourages people to learn for themselves
and not follow others, and I might conclude you dislike or even look down on instructors.

That misunderstanding would put me on the defensive,
if I had a good experience with pool instructors in the past.

"Lord don't let me be misunderstood", right?
We've all got to take an active hand in making that happen.

I don't think there are that many mean-spirited people on AZ.

Out of almost 45.000 members, how many are mean-spirited?
...I doubt it is even 1%

You're probably right. So the question is: why do the relatively few mean-spirited people on AZB post so often?

For those of you whose hearts are just breaking for poor Rick the OP, let me list the reasons why you should join me in hating him and his worthless crap that he spews on here. All of the following can be verified by reading his post history.

-You are here to argue with instructors under the guise of wanting to learn and help people.

-You call other people trolls during a trolling thread you created.

-You state in your signature that you have been playing for 48 years but never can give anyone any reason to think you actually know what you are talking about.

-You call people out for not answering questions then don't answer questions yourself.

-You throw in your religious crap at the end of posts that are clearly meant to just piss of other people.

-Almost all of your posts and threads revolve around arguments you have had with other people on here, and are weak attempts to prove your point, which is wrong most of the time anyways.

I could go on and on, but I will conclude by saying:

Perhaps people are mean to you because you deserve it. Now STFU and go away.

Seconded. Makes it tough to really get into sharing your opinions on things, especially if you're a casual AZer. And these folks sometimes seem to have infinite amounts of time to look for something to argue about. I'm too busy playing pool 8 hours a day!

But like others, I think a vast majority are great people, and I've learned so much about decades of pool history before my time, I consider it absolutely invaluable to growing my love for the game. From Freddie explaining the truths and fictions of gambling legend to JAM's seemingly endless supply of amazing pictures of pool players, I enjoy this forum beyond words.

I suspect you are now on his mean spirited list. Disregard the fact your post is 100% spot on. LOL

I enjoy the debates and just talking with so many different people on here. I just talk to everyone like I would if we were face to face. I'm actually liking forward to meeting some of the members at the US Open in October.

+1...I have no problems with a spirited debate and believe it is a good thing, but what he constantly does in multiple threads is just amazing (not in the good way). Basically he is someone that when proven wrong no matter what the topic is, he will never admit it or spin the conversation off in another direction to attempt at deflection and avoid answering the important questions that are directed at him.

being in business for the last 20 years and dealing with a lot of people, i have developed what i call the 5% rule which is very simple......a good 5% of the population are just ornery, vindictive, hateful and sometimes just plain bat$h1t crazy. Theres nothing you could have done or said to change your encounter with that person, things were going to go south with them because thats just their program.

So when you take the 5% rule and apply it to forums, the larger the forum and the more participants you have, the more of these 5% you are going to come across day to day. Im a member of some smaller forums, and ive noticed the people are much nicer, much more polite....its all a product of size.

Whatever, vCash hasn't been playing as long as I have, what does that troll know? I bet his stroke isn't even perfectly straight. Stupid vCash and damn you vBookie!

Basically

because some posters look for the 'right' with your posts, and others look for the 'wrong' with your posts.

Cyber Bullies are just like school yard bullies. There may not be that many of them percentage wise, but they are very vocal.
There is a bible verse that pretty much sums it up on here:
"Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies."

You will notice that many of the mean spirited people on here have an attitude of superior intellect. In other words they are puffed up or proud about their own superior intellectual brilliance and look down on with disdain to those who they feel are their intellectual inferiors.

But what they might need to consider is they may not be all that smarter than those whom they disdain. They just might be more educated in their field.

I once told my late wife how smart this machinist was who helped me figure out how to build some parts for my machinery and she looked at me totally unimpressed and said, "I bet he can't bake bread!"
