The cue I take to my local pool hall has SS joints and the light hitting it really shines into my eyes especially if you bend down close to the cue.

Is there anything that can be done to remove all that shininess from the joint?
Or would it be possible to paint it? Is there even paint that sticks to it?
I also thought about a duck tape.
Maybe someone can think of something I could wrap around the joint.
I guess I could try cutting one finger off one of my old shooting gloves, never use those things anyway.

Any suggestions, yes I know......I am getting black plastic joint on my next cue......thank you very much!

Problem with electrical tape is that they get all sticky after a while.
Or at least that's been my experience with them.
I'll look into it though.

Thanks for the sanding tip too.

True, I just figured the electrical tape looks cooler than duct tape.

You could also try super gluing a strip of copy paper around it, although I'm not sure how well super glue reacts with steel.

Had the same problem with a cue. Cut the finger off of a glove and that stays on there all the time now. When I take it apart I simply slide the finger down to the top of the butt and stick it in my case and when I take it back out it is still there then I just assemble and slide it back up into place.

Have you considered a hammered finish as is used on rings in the jewelry industry.

Sell the cue. Buy a new one.

Some of the suggestions here would cause permanent damage.

0000 steel wool would dull the finish just enough, I think, and would be reversible with about 5-10 minutes worth of polishing on a buffer

^^^^^^ This will work.

Or take some 600 grit sandpaper and lightly sand it and that will take the shine out and dull it. If you ever want it back shiney, just take some 1000 grit, sand it, then some 2000 grit and it will polish back up like brand new.

The black electrical tape gets sticky, but if you get the colored stuff (we call it phasing tape) it shouldn't. I use it for an on the job band-aid in a pinch.

No

Don't sand it or alter it in any way, What if you ever want to sell it later on down the road, Just do what has been mentioned already, I would use a piece of painters tape, I use it now to put on a ferrule when I'm tipping a cue so I don't get glue on the ferrule, Sticks great and will come off with no glue left behind.

And it looks real classy too!

It's not like 600 grit (or the steel wool) is going to take any actual metal off or "alter" the joint, other than in appearance which is what he wants. Some 2000 grit will polish it back up to a shiney new if he ever wants to sell it the cue. I polish SS joints up with 2000 grit all the time, never even put any polish compound on it, just some 2000 sand paper and it shines like new. Tape on the joint of my cue would be a huge distraction to me, even more than the light shining off the SS joint.

Either way, it's gonna look like crap, but will still be reversible either way the OP decides to go, so pick your poison.

I've sometimes noticed a little flash from my own stainless collar. It only happens in pool halls
with really good strong lighting.

Sanding seems excessive. You could try scotch tape, the opaque kind.
That way the joint still keeps a natural grayish color, instead of black or blue.
It may not even be obvious there's tape on it, from a distance.

I wouldn't worry about tape residue on stainless, that's easy to get off with a little soap and water,
and there's also various glue removers. Whatever you go with, might make sense to peel it off
and re-apply every so often so it doesn't get really crusted on there.
