This was the "Director's Cut" that I received as a producer of the event and the "made for TV" version was broadcast 3 times on Prime Sports (later became Fox Sports).

We intend on doing a LOT of TV broadcasts in the near future, I'm really looking forward to it and have been gathering my resources. One of my best friends produces movies and works with Chuck Norris, they did a movie together called "Bells of Innocence" and he's releasing a new movie very soon. He also produced my first three videos 'Ultimate Pool Secrets'.

We'll see what happens, I know the general public will REALLY LIKE pocket billiards if the players are presented in the best way, shape and form for the new age of viewer.

That was Championship Tour Edition Cloth....it has a bit more texture than the cloth you see today, so it's a tad slower. The rails are standard rails, not the "super fast" ones like they use now that the ball comes off faster than it goes in.

This makes everyone play super tentative and there's no reason to have a "stroke" so it's boring to watch the players bunt the cue ball around.....it's like playing on ice these days so a lot of the shot making is more defensively oriented.

This match was pretty good, but the FINALS is the jewel, I turned the game up a notch. I wish I had the semi final with Paul Potier, but can't seem to find it.

We have some ways to vastly improve the production quality these days with modern technology. I am really looking forward to producing some shows next year, the market is ready and willing to accept a whole new outlook on Pocket Billiards.

What size pockets were these??
 
I agree CJ, I think the cloth they use now, is just too fast. Were you using the three point pocket system during this match, or did you develop it later on?

These tables were in my pool room, "CJ's Billiard Palace" and were triple shimmed by David Danzinger from Houson Texas.

We used leather shims and they were done extremely well. The pocket opening was just over 4.25 and the shelf was reasonably deep although I don't know the measurement.

Anyone that ever played at CJ's knows the tables were very challenging, however, with new cloth (we used Championship Pro Edition) the pockets always play softer than they do a few weeks after covering.

yes, he did get paid for the 11 racks and there was a 2.5 year legal battle over some of the specifics......the "million" was a 20 year annuity that had a cash value (if you got it all up front) of $630,000 ..... just like the lottery, if you win 10 Million it's only 6.3 million if you want it all in cash.

The documentary will tell the "rest of the story" and show him running the last 5 racks to win the "million dollar challenge"......the documentary will be out in mid November.

2 shot push out will leave the vast majority of viewers in a coma. ,,or they will be changing channels to something a little more fast paced ,, the Xbox text Facebook and you tube boomers have so many more options outside TV to begin with that when they finally do sit down and watch TV it better be entertaining other wise the only viewers you get are the ones that play pool already ,, I would say that's all pool ever has really gotten before only a very very small pct if any was new to the game

Great match. Loved the tempo. Easy to watch, now a days players walk around the table 2 to 3 times before shooting, on every shot.

Now you going to compare pool ,, how many high schools have a pool team , tennis although on a decline in the US still has a pretty good following there is no doubt in my mind if the general public were asked to name 5 tennis players male or female most could I hardly think that's would be the case if the same people were asked to name 5 pool players

There will never be a time where pool will be anywhere near what tennis is with or without TV after all tennis is a true sport not a game

It's really not that hard to know what people will view ,pool in its best day could only muster a fraction of the numbers of the next closest game/sport , why ? Well that's pretty simple
It's not a game / sport of any consequence and its flat out Boring

That last I heard he was in Vegas a couple of months ago. Jimmy has always been one of my all time favorite pool characters. "Pretty Boy Floyd" can sell "woof tickets" as good as any of them. Jimmy comes from a special era, I was fortunate to catch the tail end of that generation....when every tournament was like being in the middle of a movie. I can still see Rempe, Sigel, Mizerak, Hopkins, McCready, Earl, Liscotti, etc.

The game of pool is no more exciting than any other game or sport, the key is the characters ... Jimmy Mataya was certainly one of the premiere entertainers and played pretty good pool too. As a matter of fact I saw him win a big Pro event in Vegas before I even became a pro and he played "Top Shelf" 9 Ball...but straight pool was his forte.

I was practicing at one of my first Pro Tournaments in RENO and Jimmy was walking by.....he hesitated, lit a cigarette and took a deep drag. "Keep practicing kid" he said with smoke accenting his words "Keep practicing and you'll be a darn good lil shooter one day"......with that he walked off laughing, leaving a cascade of smoke "But you'll never beat THE FLOYD!!!"

Yes, Jimmy, you were right, I never got a chance to beat THE FLOYD. :groucho:

It was funny to watch Earl acting like a gentleman and complimenting you on a few shots. Im too used to seeing him ranting and raving, lol. I guess the million he won helped out his disposition a little bit also.

Earl is much better in a professional atmosphere. Playing races to 15, suit and tie, great cloth and tables, full house of spectators, playing for plenty of money, etc.....this is the situation he always wanted and the one we created in the Professional CueSports Association.

If he only wouldn't have won the Million at the first tournament things would have be terrific......we had 3 other "Million Dollar Challenge" tournaments scheduled and they were ALL televised. We also had ESPN doing our World Open/Ultimate 9 Ball Event.

I have a feeling this concept was going to gain momentum and sponsorship. we had a Marketing Agency working for us that had clients like 7-11, Dr Pepper, Taco Bell, etc.I also had a Public Relations Group that was constantly sending out press releases.

It's really ironic how this whole Million Dollar Challenge happened.....it was the best thing that ever happened and the worse that that could have happened all rolled into one. 'The Game is the Teacher'

Yes, they've taken the "power" out of the Pro Tournaments these days with the super fast cloth, rails and cue ball.....and the magic rack guarantees a ball on the break so the game's more like bowling these days.....and I never liked bowling that much. ;)

You never needed to play safe with two shot rollout. You played a two way shot that gave you position, but left your opponent safe. Sometimes it was a tough two way shot and you got to test your stroke.

Don't need a stroke on the fast cloth and live rails. You rarely need to draw the ball. You can go forward and hit five rails with spin. BTW, when did some of the stronger ladies start entering the men's tournaments? :smile: Probably flame worthy, but no disrespect is intended.

Pushout rules allow the player to go for the out instead of grinding with a lockout artist. Nine ball turns into a boring game when you're ducking on every rack. If I spot the seven with pushout rules, I'll only give up the eight with TE rules.

When Simonis came on the scene with cash in hand and sponsorships, everybody let them change the makeup of the game by using their cloth. Despite the noticeable change, nobody protested. I can barely hit the cue ball and will go up and down the table. It slides before it draws on a cut shot. :frown: Get rid of the trampoline rails, too.

Did anybody notice how quickly the cue ball slowed down and stopped on the video? It looked many times like it was hit too hard, but it came up good. No shooting for an extra rail when you can hold the cue ball with a good stroke.
