Who Is/Was The Best With Own $$?

Shane is pretty good playing on his dime, but gets staked a lot also. I've been around pool for 60+ years and I don't remember very many big name players playing on their own dime for big stakes. Can you name some top players over the years that almost always played on their own $?

I always played with my own $. Granted I stayed clear of any bar or poolroom that had top players in it. I was a very low level hustler @$5-$20 a game. Anything more than $200 a set with someone even in speed with me, I would get a little case of the bow-wow's. But staying under the radar was easy back in the day...and that's how you made scores. I'd still have to go with Shane although there's plenty of non-world champions that will bet it as soon as they get it. I don't know of any champion players that refuse to play on someone else's stake. Not that their scared but it just makes sense.

Champions could do the same thing if they learned how to manage their money. If your a champion you are mostly going to get even or very close to even games. The type of games that a few bad rolls for you and a few good ones for him=loss. Never play for your whole stake. Peer pressure and whoofing gets most to empty out...wrong. At any level in games like that never play for more than 20%-30% of your stake. I may have handled my money like a nit to most but I came out on top year after year, after year. Johnnyt
 
But did Cooney ever match up tough? Most of the time he was stealing from what I heard.
 
I can't remember the amount of staking that KId D had, but I'd have to think he held his own with almost anyone in the last 10-20 years.
 
I have heard that Cooney bet his own. Kid Delicious is another, although he split with his partner and steerer, it was still his money in the middle. And over the years, it was A LOT. And even though he often gets staked, Dennis O has put a bunch of his own money on the lights over the years. Granted, not all of it, and not all of the time, but still, his end must be a pretty tall number too.

Most of these two posts sums up what I've been told from an old player. He realized he wasn't making much that way, though, so it was going to be a hard life to live. He decided one day that he was going to save up and play for $5k. He waited.. and waited.. and waited.. until he found his game.

Yeah, nits are what gamblers sometimes like to call people that are in it to make money. If you look at most 'gamblers', they lived fast and died broke. Why? Because they gambled what they had and when you do that, you eventually lose what you have. If you play for your whole stake, you'd better know you're going to win. Otherwise, you may as well be investing in penny stocks.
 
Everything I have heard says Harold Worst played anyone and on his own.

I'm.not really in the know but I think a lot of players back in the 70s to 90s played on their own ..... Hunter May be one

He plays hard for the money and will matchup pretty tough, i.e., not stealing most of he time.
 
How about the 2 guys that was shooting in n.o a week ago? Ronnie vs ? Maybe not best but they sure do play with big $$. Not sure if they were staked or not.
