Mark Wilson & Don Wardell, M.D.

Joey,
Most of your problems are related to inadequate po boy consumption.... as an expert in THAT field, I can show you how to correct it....at Mandina's :-).

Hey guys, take it easy on tommyceilings. My only expertise is on what makes a good textbook (B.S., M.S., M.D. degrees...I doubt anyone has read more texts than me).

I didn't want my name on it as an author; realizing it would detract at least in a small way from the credibility of the work; but Mark insisted.

I did the writing and organizing; but it is MARK'S LIFE'S WORK AND HIS CONTENT. I did it only for the good of the game (and have no financial stake in this...except the free meals I expect to beg from Cathy :-)). Those like elvicash who have read every pool book know that much of the material in this book is completely new and groundbreaking - it has never been done before. Neither Mark nor I care at all if anyone buys it; we just wanted to leave it as a legacy to his life's work and get it into the Library of Congress. I think it has done it fairly well. The info in the first 6 chapters is not really found in any pool book ever; and Part III on applying Navy Seal training principles to learning pool is also quite unique. His structured training regimen to teach YOURSELF to play at a high level is likewise unique.

Happy reading to any student motivated enough to read it - you will find much of value, and you will be the member of a very exclusive club - you will be a true student of the game...and our friend. I would have KILLED to have something like this to read when I was a teenager with time on my hands to learn; but no good guide to proficiency.

There you go again Betmore, taking the high road when everybody wanted a flame war.

Now where are we and what are we going to do on a friday night with our high speed internet connections.

Not even a little mud thrown back, pathetic, it really is.

I like your post especially because of how strongly I relate to the "knowing" but not always "applying" aspect. :o I'm impressed that you found little "new information" in the book. I look forward to reading a portion at a time.

Right now, Don is in town and I am getting the good Doctor to make a prognosis of my afflictions

Just a thought Joey....it might actually be better to read the whole book, then go back and start studying it a section at a time. I think you will get more out of it that way. By reading the whole thing first, I feel certain things or themes will be stressed, and then when you do go back to study it, you will pick up on things faster because you will now be reading them in a new sense of awareness.

thats what i am doing reading all the way thru it i am working on my stance i have taken a lot of lesson from mark and this book is a great help thanks again mark and sidekick lol

Oscar,
THANKS! I have always considered myself as Mark's "typist," so "sidekick" is a BIG step up:-). Glad you like it.

Don has a unique way of describing and explaining the different techniques and processes. His communication skills are great in text format but I am an auditory type person and I'm going to encourage him talk about their book until the last day he leaves New Orleans as he speaks so well that I am spell-bound. (And I am serious).

Neil, you may be right, but I am looking to clarify, learn and fix a few things that I think, have been negatively impacting my game. Don has been kind enough to point out some of them and so far he has been spot on. I'm going to stick with picking and choosing for the time being. I admire those of you who can breeze through a text book like this but I have to take it chapter by chapter.

A good friend asked if he could borrow my book when I finished reading it and I told him, that he could borrow it right now if he liked, because it might be a VERY long time before I finished reading the entire book. :) He politely declined and I'm sure will be buying a copy for himself.

Like I said, hands on is the best way to go! Enjoy your time with him, I'm sure there's a fair amount that didn't get in the book too, especially some of his stories. Don will definitely give you plenty to think about!

Super G,
Sincere apologies. I tried to defend him (he overemphasized a valid question).... but he deteriorated into trolling and fabricating, and I can't be bothered with that. Arguing with him would be like dueling with an unarmed man (you remember the feud with "breakup". ...I can defend myself adequately). Perhaps you could check out an aiming thread instead?

Neil,
Well.... only because he asked. I am NOT setting myself up as some kind of instructor; and I am NOT going around giving unasked for advice (pool has PLENTY of those guys).

I will consider myself the most enthusiastic student of Mark and Jerry's....I am happy with that designation.

That may be Don, but you have to admit that having the co-author of the book right there is still better than telling you that he doesn't have time for you because he's reading your book. The material may be Mark's, but there is no way you worked on this for years without coming to a very fine understanding of it. Joey would have to be a fool not to "pick your brain" about the book.

It's nice to be humble, but I have a strong feeling you would be a very fine instructor if you ever chose to do so.;)

Oh my, thanks for the kind words. I do know every word in the book, and we parsed every sentence to be sure it meant what Mark wanted. Took 4 years to re-write, and 2 years for SIX edits.

As you are so astutely aware, "knowing it" and "doing it" are profoundly different. The knowing part is MUCH easier. .. the reason pool has so many "experts":-).

I am only about 3500 hours into the method (Mark pointed out I "wasted" 4000 pool hours writing the book), but I feel quite good about the steady improvement the method offers. I am driven to improve.

Neil,
You've never written words that were more appropriate or more accurate than those above.

Sent my check out to Mark this past Wednesday. I'll be watching for the mailman every day starting about this coming Wednesday I would think. I've only heard good things (mostly great things) about Mark as a pool player, instructor/coach and person. Looking forward to reading this book.

Williebetmore, I'm from the Indy area (as I believe you are). Hope to meet you someday.

I'm very impressed with the book, great pictures and well-written.

I had no idea that I've had my back foot about 6" or more across the shot line, so it's a pretty big adjustment to my stance. Should be a champion by New Year's.

The book does offer you a timeline to becoming a champion but if you read that section you will see it may require just a bit more than 7 weeks of training.

Not that my opinion carry's weight but I want to compliment Mark and Willie on an exceptional job. The book was on my porch when I got home yesterday. Of course I immediately opened it up and thumbed through. My first impression was "This is Incredible". Not just content but the high quality paper, photos ........... Then I started to skim the content. OMG!! To be polite.

For those that are doubters, My Disclaimer, I will say this: I've casually known Mark for many years and admittingly bought the book partly because of that and I'm sort of collector of billiard books and this one certainly needed to be in the collection no matter its content or cost. That being said,

As far as the cost/benefit risk? I was confident the benefits would not be an issue. Why? Because I've taken his first lesson. It was nearly 8 hours! He was ready to go longer. I couldn't. I was dead and soooo much to digest. Knowing its taken as long as it did to bring this to print I knew without a doubt it would be worth every penny. I'm guessing Mark is wondering if he nailed it or not. My opinion? YES

FOLKS, again, for what its worth, I say its worth every penny for those that consider themselves Students. I say that without reading the entire book, I only play 3Cushion, and only a scanned and read the Intro, first chapter and a little more of selected topics. There's no doubt this teaching will add to my game.

See ya, I got something better to do.
Thank you Mark and Willie. My hat is off to you both.

Dr. Wardell was in town this past week and we hung out for a while, hitting some balls and eating a lot of the delicious Louisiana food at local restaurants. That guy looks very fit but can he eat.......

On the last day of his trip to our city, I finally had to know if he had any of his books with him. I realized that while my son hasn't been fully bitten by the pool bug, (he only plays with me on Tuesday nights in a tournament) my son could benefit greatly from this precisely written pool book so I bought one for him. It will be his first pool book. :D

Some of my pool buddies were interested in his book and he sold the rest of what he had with him. Don's gas mileage will probably be a little better on the way back home. Safe travels.

THANKS for a fun and informative week!

JoeyA

That's cool, Joey. Good company, good food, what more do you want? Wish it had been my first book, would have saved me a bundle.
