Brian parks back to back and 3 times overall....WOW!!!

Brian Parks is a fantastic player and, from what I saw, deserved to win.
Congratulations on your 3rd title!

Back to back apa 9b titles, back to back plus one amateur titles and his azb player info shows him taking a tournament ahead of people like parica. While it's a very impressive fete, I also wonder what all he needs to do to be considered a pro. Sitting close to his dad in 2006 at apa singles, he was challenging people for his son, saying something to the effect of he'd play anybody there for whatever they want. Could be a father that was proud of his son and caught up in the moment, but it sounded kind of *****ish at the time.

I watched the stream Parks plays good. I was wondering the same thing. Maybe he doesn't play in pro events and thus retains his amateur status. I would put his speed at regional pro level.

Either way congratulations to him for winning.

UWATE, I never said I was a favorite, but I'm far from a heavy underdog as you say. I said a few of the winners with that trophy in their living room are light in the pocket to me. And there's a few more I'd have no problems gambling with EVEN, and I don't EVER get staked, so I'd be bettin my own cash. And I get all of maybe 2 hours a week of pool play.

Is BRIAN parks one of the guys I'd play no, I know who I can and can't beat unlike most.
I just don't know why the guy gets his rocks off by winning a trophy that he could buy cheaper then it cost him to go there. Winning it once is fine, but paying to keep winning it is laughable to me anyhow. Maybe that's just the gambling side of me, tellin me it makes no sense.

I will be down in March. I will play anyone of the 3 past champs living down there. You guys can PM me and we can set up the details. I'll play 3 days in a row, one after the other, you guys home turf, I get to pick the table, and bet, sound fair.

I'm going to exit the thread now because Alot of league and trophy players always take offense to everything. I guess it's an APA thing.

Please let the thread get back on topic. Sorry for the disruption.

This always happens every year. The tournament goes down and a select few on az bad mouth the event. The bottom line Brent is that the tournament is very very difficult to win. Jeff Abernathy,Brett Stottlymeyer, Ernesto Bayuau, Jon James Jr, Richko, Linares....all those guys and alot more like them got beat this weekend and Brian finished again on top. He's a helluva player and a super nice guy to boot. What he has done is a fantastic accomplishment and you badmouthing the tournament and saying you would smash a trophy that quite honestly I would say your way the underdog to win really sounds lame and so inappropriate for a thread like this.

Great response David. You played pretty darn good yourself this weekend. Nice Tournament.

Maybe he just wanted to try and become the first person to win it 3 times. I know it says amateur in the title but some of these guys play anything but amateur level pool.
Regardless it's a great accomplishment.

Thank you guys on the Congrats!

I had a great time. For all those talking crap about my status as a player......watch the finals!!!!!! I am clearly an amateur. I have been very fortunate to win the Am's 3 times. I play the pool and that tournament because I love the game and I enjoy meeting new players and hanging out. I'm honered to play in that event. It's amazing how so many people can talk crap after someone wins such an event. Kinda sucks.

As far as Azer "Banks" you sir can go **** yourself! My Father would never ever talk shit about me playing people for money and doesn't even like that side of pool. Don't ever talk about my father or anyone's father without knowing the facts. It's way out of my character to tell you to Go **** Yourself but I wanna puke reading what was supposed to be a nice thread to your dumb ass comments!

Anyway thank you guys for the congrats. Sorry for my rant lol

I'm 100% sure that was not my Dad and yes I will get pissy when you talk shit about him or anyone like that without knowing the facts! Again out of character for me to say it bu Go **** Yourself! I never even post on here much but for you to say that shit is so stupid! Maybe your just jealous I guess.

If it's so easy, then go ahead! You probably could get odds! I'm sure there would be a VERY big window open on those who would bet against you being able to win at all, let alone..."for no other reason then to just smash the trophy right there on stream, and tell em what a B.S. tourney it is."

I'll be a bit more polite. I watched the stream for several hours and can say with all sincerity, this tournament isn't representative of top amateur pool. I say this but you must understand, I agree with the concept of this tournament but perhaps have issue with its execution and I'm happy to elaborate.

For starters, it's difficult to define what is truly "amateur". I like the APA's definition which is strictly about monetary gain but, as inclusive as this definition is, the very best players seen in many other "amateur" events throughout the country fail to show-up for this one.

Why is that? Well, tournaments such as these cost participants a lot of money. There are entry fees, travel expenses (which, for me, include hiring a dog sitter), time off from work (limited for many people). We're accustomed to monetary compensation for winning. I'm not saying this is the correct way of doing things but it's the way things are typically done.

What's the matter with this structure? Let's do some math. Just speaking about the men, there are 128 finalists. Each finalist won a regional event that cost him $40 to play in. Most regional events had fields of 32 players. That means about $150,000 was collected, not including the $75 the winner must pay on site after winning the regional (yes, the winner digs into his own pocket and must furnish $75). In exchange, they get free hotel and must pay for their car & airfare. This puts the individual's commitment at around $500 assuming they get great airfare to Tampa and a great deal on a car rental. It could be as much as $1k.

And, on to the important part. What do you get? You get (drum roll please), a $500 entry into a pro event and hotel for the week (worth about $1k) and a really nice trophy. In my opinion, events like these are great but given the fact they collected about $150,000, there should be more prizes. Seriously, one winner and one hundred and twenty seven losers. That's kinda rough, if you ask me.

This is no disrespect to the person that won. I'm sure he's an excellent player. And, this is no disrespect to those that participate. I think it's important to have events such as these that encourage improvement, reward excellence and feed pro events. However, you don't need to be a mathematician to know that unless you're killing the field, you're better off sending a check directly to Barry Behrman personally.

If they hold this event in NYC (where I live), I'll play every time. As it stands, I really need an excuse to want to visit Tampa. I have relatives there so perhaps I'll do it one day. Like I said, I'm not entirely against this. But, make no mistake of it, there are plenty of "amateurs" who are disgusted by the payout and more disgusted by the constant references about it being a "top amateur field" when there are matches routinely displayed on the TV table of intermediate-level play.

The only thing I say in the APA's defense is, they don't lie about it. They're clear about what is covered by them and what isn't and what they're awarding. However, until there's proper monetary incentive, you can never say this is a true amateur championship. Those that are "in the know" will always reference the BCA Nationals and rightfully so.

With that said, I really would like to see more tournaments that sent players to pro events. I think the pool world could really benefit from a pyramid structure that offered proper payouts.

Brent I know you play real good, I watched you a few times play on streams. My point is that the US Amateurs is a very tough tournament to win and even a player your speed is an underdog to snap it off. You have to to fade, races to 7, mixed format 8/9ball and its 128 guys, most of whom run out pretty good, some really really good. Great players better than you come to this event every year that do not win and the way you talk you make it sound like its some easy to win lame tin cup event.

Ive been to quite a few and every year it seems to be more competitive than the last. This year there were so many good players there and I can think of a bunch of other players like David Rowell, Robert Hall, Kenny Brisbon, Tim Orange, Henry Brodt, Ron Park, etc that all have attended this event that were not even here this year.

You really are just speaking your mind I know, but I honestly think you are speaking from a place of ignorance and that if you actually attended the event even one time you would feel differently. Try playing it one time and see the level of play and the actual tournament setup and execution before you make your mind up as to what this event really is all about. Over 2000 players entered the event this year, do you really think all those players are just idiots chasing a tin cup, or might it be possible that some of them know something you don't?

Brian Park is a really humble guy. He didn't post about winning this tournament, someone else did. I do know Brian plays in all the tournaments he can and is a really good player. I hope you aren't mad at Brian for winning this event 3 times:-)

Seriously, you did well and you're a good shot, but maybe the ego's gone to your head here. I said what I remembered. It was about one year after I started playing, so just about everything from that time is remembered a bit more than the rest. As I said, if I'm wrong, my bad, but that's what I remembered. I don't give a rat's ass if it was your dad or somebody else's dad, it came out as prik-ish.

Out of character? It's not seeming so at the moment. Right back at you, bubs.. **** you and the horse you rode in on. Jealous? Wish I could play pool a bit better.. of somebody that acts like a jerkoff? Not at all. Have fun in Bako.

If you want to start running your mouth about how jealous you think people are, maybe you ought to nut up and play in a big boy tournament, hot shot. Look for a nuthugger somewhere else.

Edit: That's about all I need to post to somebody that never posts.

DAYUM, Banks...

Tell us how you REALLY feel!!!

Russ

"Banks" I don't really have time for your lame ass! It's people like you that I truly feel so bad for! Have fun in your land! I'm done waisting anymore time on this. Sad that I win a tourney and have to see your post. Again I feel for you. Lmao

Pretty sure Brian has played in and beaten a bunch of big name pros in pro level tournaments. But continue with your argument.

Brian isnt running his mouth at all here. He's just hot you characterized his Dad in this manner when his Dad doesnt even like the gambling side of pool. You are mistaken here, and the only thing I can think of is that you caught some older guy who knew Brian from California and was just talking smack. It wasnt his Dad though. Brian is a very easy going guy and is actually very humble about his abilities and his accomplishments. Did he go off on you here? yeah he did. If someone was talking about your Dad and making him sound like you did and it was totally not true, what would you do?
