Pool school in CA - Bay Area 12/6-12/8

I'd like to know why folks come into an informative thread only to throw around negativity and stir up senseless crap.. Both know exactly who I'm talking about.

Scott is a good instructor, his classes are quite reasonable and he brings a lot of knowledge and experience to the student. He is a strong communicator as well.

This, I speak from personal experience. I do wish folks could just grow up and stop hating so much! JMHO

OMG..........Can You Believe It?......................Roger is now saying he was only trying to help Scott with his program............this is....this is......ugh! He's as bad as some dumb Senator or Congressman coming out and saying that every woman needs to have some type of trans-vaginal probe insertion every time she wants to buy birth control...........pretty stupid, lame and shameless.

Then after getting blasted by the media that same politician goes to the media the very next day and tells the nation the press got it all wrong. He was really just trying to help women see their doctors more regularly we so they could learn more about birth control............DUH.........Mr. Long, the Forum is not filled with idiots as readers and your woeful attempt to back pedal and exonerate yourself gets a big "F" for a grade. So now you want everyone to believe you were just trying to be a friend and ally to Scott.......you were more like "Et Tu Brute" trying to place the blade in Scott's back.......Hah, you got caught and so nah, nah, nah, nah.........boo hoo hoo........you folded faster than a cheap tent in gale force wind.

You got called out by your peers, and now you don't even have the brass to stick to your guns which would have earned you a little respect but now you're just another 'notorious" weasel on the Forum that tries to wiggle out of their words when they get challenged by others. If you wanted to move Scott's post to the front page, you could have done that with a positive post or a bump but instead you tried to sabatoge his thread with innuendo and in turn, Scott's enterprise.......and I might add that no one has incorrectly inferred anything from Long's posts.........he wanted to create doubts about Scott's program and prices.........but it didn't work.....it backfired on Long and now Scott's pool school looks like the really great bargain it actually is.

I only wish my shoulder was healed sufficiently from surgery so I could attend Scott's school in Fresno next month. AZers....ignore Long's blithering remarks.........you can rely on Scott's program because it works......look at the personal testimony of those that have attended...........and then read Long's posts......Sure, he was only trying to be helpful and was merely attempting to remove a splinter from Scott's back with a very sharp dagger when it "inadvertently" slipped out of his grasp and it unexpectedly plunged into Scott's back mortally wounding him.

But Hey, after all, Long said he was only trying to help Scott...........OMG....that deserves a double Duh.......DUH? What a friggin' cowardly act........doesn't have the guts to say what he means and mean what he says...........Long's creditability just fell to zero on the Forum IMO and his comments are worthless.

Thanks for the kind words Joel, Joe and Matt! As Bavafongoul mentioned, in addition to this pool school in the Bay Area, Dec. 6-8, there will another 3-day school in Fresno Dec. 13-15. That will be at Diamond Billiards. These are rare opportunities to take advantage of knowledge that will pay dividends for years to come. The last time I did pool schools in CA was 2 years ago. Anyone interested can PM me or Bavafongoul for more information.

Diamonds Billiards in Fresno is a great pool room with a wonderful arrangement of 7' and 9' tables including one 9' Diamond Table with heater that's a real gem of a table. It doesn't look like I'll be able to enroll in Scott's school but come to the pool school at Diamonds and look me up.........I'm usually at the Break Room or Diamonds.......I'll buy ya a beer and you can tell me how great the school is.

Okay, you want the truth, I'll give it to you.

I do not like Cocobolo Cowboy. I thought I made that pretty clear in an earlier post, but I don't want anyone to be cloudy on that fact now. I'm also pretty certain that Scott doesn't like Cocobolo Cowboy, either, judging from comments he's made in this and other threads. And I didn't like it when Cocobolo threw the first stone by asking Scott why he never posted his rates in his forum solicitations. So far, nothing but the truth here.

I thought Scott did a good job of countering Cocobolo Cowboy's loaded question by telling him that he was too cheap to pay even $5 for a ;lesson. There was nothing but the truth in that statement.

However, I did not think it was necessary for Scott to carry it one step further by mentioning that there are instructors who charge twice as much as himself. To me, that looked like Scott was trying to make himself look good by making other instructors look bad. And according to PM's I've received, others got the same impression. More truth.

Scott uses these forums for free advertising, and that's about all he uses them for. I have never seen him lend any guidance of an instructional nature here unless it is to make a statement about his pool school. I have also witnessed him jumping in quickly to recommend himself whenever someone asks if anyone knows of a good instructor in their area. Scott is also quick to chastise anyone who criticizes himself or the "SPF Family," just as he did earlier today in the Lee Brett thread. All facts.

Scott could have avoided this whole derailment if HE had told the truth earlier by admitting that he was talking about only one instructor when he mentioned that "other instructors" were charging twice as much as himself. Instead, he said he couldn't mention any names because PBIA instructors aren't allowed to badmouth each other. So, if he wasn't trying to make himself look good by making another instructor look bad, why couldn't he mention that instructor's name? (If anyone is interested in knowing that other instructor's name, just shoot me a PM and I'll give it to you. It's not badmouthing, and I'm not in with the BCA/PBIA, anyway.) More facts.

Scott once came through Phoenix and gave one of our local players a lesson in the very room where my pro shop is located. Several months later, Scott's student stopped me as I was walking by his table, and asked a question about something he was struggling with. I was able to explain what was happening in terms he could readily understand. He then said, "Wow, I just learned more in five minutes with you than I did in four hours with a master instructor!" (That may sound like a boast from me, but none of you are ever coming to Phoenix to take lessons from me anyway, so why would I want to try and solicit your business?) It's just one more fact.

Had enough honesty yet, Bavafongoul? Hold on, there's more.

I am a long-time friend of Mike Howerton, the owner of AZBilliards, and I once asked him how he felt about people using these forums for free advertising. He responded by saying that he really didn't mind as long as they were also contributing meaningful content. I have never really agreed with that because AZB is in the business of selling advertising, and advertising is what pays Mike's bills. At the very least, guidelines should be set up to keep freeloaders from trying to create forum monopolies in their given fields. That's just my very honest opinion.

Believe it or not, I have no desire to see Scott's business hurt. I have only met him once, briefly, but I get the impression that he is a hard-working and honest man. I can also tell that he loves instructing, and that he genuinely desires to see his students improve. Pool is a tough business to be in, especially during these times, and Scott doesn't need his road being made any tougher by anyone, including me. I would just like to see fairness all the way around. As someone said earlier, "It's a two-way street."

And now for one more honest opinion for you, Bavafongoul. The only cowards on these forums are the ones who hide behind goofy screen names and spout insults at others when they know their anonymity will protect them from ever being held accountable for their words. You blasted politicians (I don't really blame you for that.), but at least politicians have to provide their real identities. And as for your shoulder problem, stop using that as an excuse for not taking Scott's course. You can still learn without having to perform. But if you can't afford it, just say so. Or if you're too cheap, just admit that too. I had that same shoulder problem a few years back, but I never let it stop me from doing the things I needed to do. Maybe it's your wimpy bone that needs to be surgically removed?

There! All of my honest opinions have been revealed! Does that make you feel better?

Hey Long....next time have the balls to come forth and pull the curtains back instead of manipulating a post in the manner you attempted and and got busted for........I call em as I see 'em......I don't back down........and I sure don't back pedal on my position.

Roger...I offer free advice on many different subjects here, all the time. If you can honestly say that you've "never seen him lend any guidance of an instructional nature, unless it is to make a statement about his pool school", then you don't read here much. That is probably the biggest BS statement about me that I've ever heard. At least I'm a GOLD member, paying to support this site...what's your excuse? I also have been friends with Mike and Jerry for many years. If they had a problem with me, they would tell me.

Naturally I would recommend myself, as I am almost the only touring professional instructor who will come to you in your home or pool room and work with you. As far as the "student" you mentioned (want to name Pat?), every student I work with knows that they can call me anytime and ask questions (of course they're supposed to do this while they're in the lesson, but many don't remember until later)...this is something I tell EVERY student, and provide them with my card. Many take advantage of this free service (I even allow people to call me months or years later, and I'll still help them).

The only time I "chastize" anybody is when they post incorrect information...and then it's just to make sure the correct information is out there...which was the case with Chris Renfro on the Lee Brett thread. BTW, nobody criticizes the SPF Family...they're too busy complimenting on what a great learning experience they had. It's pretty obvious why you're no longer associated with the professional instructor association, and that's your privilege. You probably shouldn't cast stones, unless you're willing to get involved and try to effect change (instead of just complain). That's why I joined the PBIA, and why I worked to get elected to the board...so changes for the betterment of teaching could be made...and they have.

Scott even makes stops at Boys, and Girl Clubs like he did in Phoenix, AZ back in 2009. Heard if Scott is in a City teaching, and there is a Boys, and Girls Club he call em up, and offers his time for free Pool clinic.

Prior to CocoboloCowboy's great post about the kids, it was self-evident that Scott's chosen profession was being a PBIA pool instructor. After reading CC's post and seeing the photos, I was reminded of an old expression...."For the Love of the Game."

I think Scott might actually epitomize that notion and this translates into his teaching approach. I believe his ultimate reward is in seeing how much you get to improve as a player. He relishes hearing about how one of his pool school attendees finishes in the money at a tournament and it's really all about sharing knowledge. The challenge is, and always has been, effective communication of that knowledge and so teaching style is understandably extremely critical to how much you learn and master.

CocoboloCowboy.....thanks for the terrific post and photos of Scott and the kids.....Lke I previously said "For the Love of the Game!".

I didn't thread jack anything; I helped Scott promote his business. How? By asking a question that I knew would be controversial

Thanks to Bruce for posting those photos! It really is all about the kids! They are like sponges and readily absorb anything you tell them...which is why I ALWAYS talk about etiquette and not abusing the equipment. The kids always love trick shots, but they love to play even more. I go out of my way to help them win against me!

Thanks for the kind words Matt. You're right, the real payoff to teaching is seeing your students succeed beyond their expectations. It doesn't even have to be about winning or cashing in a tournament...sometimes it is just "the light going on" about their stroke; accomplishing something that they have maybe struggled with for years! That's the joy of teaching for me, and it's the same for every good instructor. It is truly for "the love of the game"! :D

Dan...It was a pleasure to get to play some with you last night! Dan, Pat Johnson and I played quite a while together last night at Pressure. Then PJ left and Dan & I stayed for another couple of hours. Great fun! It's wonderful to see a player come full circle, after pool school, and maintain such a high level of play years later! If any of you Chicago AzBr's haven't had the chance to play some with Quesports, you're missing out on some strong competition, not to mention a nice guy! Let's not wait another 6 years to get together again! LOL

Hey Scott, Thanks for the kind words! It was fun last night and I finally got to show you that I did pay attention to you & Randy at the school. Hard to imagine it's been 6 years since I took the class. Good seeing Pat as well, I have not seen him I some time also. Hope you enjoyed your visit and look forward to seeing you the next time you are here.

Way to keep it classy Scott! I hope you had a great Thanksgiving, best of luck with your trip out West. Look forward to seeing you in Indiana in the not too distant future I hope.

Mark...We had a GREAT school last weekend in San Ramon CA. Thanks to Kevin & Russ for being terrific hosts. I hope to come back for another school next summer, after the BCAPL nationals in Vegas. I'll be back in Indy late next month, Mark. hope to see you then. Next stop Fresno...and then down to Los Angeles. Anyone along the way who's interested can PM me.
