There was more to it then picking the 5 best players for the teams this year.
Obviously, Corey would be on the USA, and Thorsten would be on Europe.
I was talking to Keith last night about this topic. I like both players, but I had thought Dennis would be a better choice. Keith said that Dennis can "bring it" when he wants to, but Keith, like you, believes Corey is a better player, having more shots in his arsenal than Dennis. Keith thinks that the reason Dennis got the green light is because he, unlike Corey, has more of an on-stage presence with his personality. Corey is a nice guy, and I like him, but if you don't know him, he's quiet as a church mouse and doesn't have much emotion when he's in the pit. It doesn't make for good TV. The Mosconi Cup is all about excitement. Corey, bless his heart, is just not as exciting on the screen as Dennis. And there's nothing wrong with that, but for Mosconi Cup, it's something they look for: EMOTION.
In the end, I do feel bad for Corey and Thorsten, and they are both very worthy candidates for Mosconi Cup for sure. Though both of them are the best of the best when it comes to pool, it is hard for an audience to endear themselves to them, as they do not express much emotion.
For this year's Mosconi Cup's 20th anniversary, I believe that Matchroom was not only looking for the best of the best, like Corey and Thorsten, but they wanted raw emotion for this celebration; thus, why I think Dennis was chosen.
FWIW, don't think Dennis can't get there. With his will, he just may be MVP once again. Dennis can play him some pool, and I look forward to seeing him.
