Earl is a disgrace!

Genius.... Not even close. Earl was an incredible shot maker and he hated to lose, that is what set Earl apart from most of them. Efren and Corey? Genius. Earl? Incredible shot maker with an extreme desire to win.

For all you folks who pile on the criticism of this great pool playing legend, you can only dream of the accomplishments that this man has achieved in his life....and you do it from the anonymity of facelessness behind the keyboard of your computer: I say Earl has nothing to explain to us. What have YOU done?
Since the "you" is in all caps and bold, I assume it is directed towards everyone on the forum. I would wager that there are a great many people on here that have done greater things than Earl by any measure other than becoming a great pool player, so I think you should reconsider belittling what everyone else has done with their life. Earl is an incredible player, but when it comes down to what he has really done with his life, I would place his contributions to charity above his list of pool accomplishments.

As far as what Earl should be held accountable for, I don't buy that "Earl has nothing to explain to us." Part of being a professional sports figure and celebrity is being subject to public criticism. Earl says himself that he became a professional tournament player, at least in part, for the adoration of his fans. The scorn of the pool community when he acts unprofessionally is part of the package.

Tom you're a good friend to stick up for Earl.

I do agree he's a genius at pool, a savant.
A few are saying genius goes hand-in-hand with madness but that seems like a copout.
For every Earl there are several Efrens and Shanes.

One major point I can't really agree with -

If people had to be world champions (or even professionals) to comment on athletes, artists, business people, etc.
then forums like this couldn't exist. Nobody could say anything about any subject.

But I don't need 6 US Open titles before I'm qualified to say the guy with 5 US Open titles is acting like a jerk.

Some of us may not be able to draw our rock like Earl but we are all qualified to comment
on jerk behavior because everyone who's ever lived becomes a sort of 'expert' on that subject.
Nobody gets through life without dealing with several jerks.

And the people calling him out aren't scared or anonymous or faceless, it's guys like Jay Helfert
who are as qualified as anyone alive to comment on professional behavior in the pool world.

He's no more a genius for putting a ball in a hole than Mike Tyson is for punching people.

Bobby Fischer could see countless possibilities.. limited 'genius'. Now just a jerk.

Van Gogh, created something out of nothing. Visionary painter. Died at 37, so everything that's known about him and his creations was done within that short time frame. His work is popular, even among those that don't collect art. He also did work as a missionary.

Tesla, harnessed A/C for use. Too much to list, really.

Howard Robard Hughes, Jr. (December 24, 1905 – April 5, 1976) was an American business magnate, investor, aviator, aerospace engineer, film maker and philanthropist.

Maybe Earl's close to Fischer.. that's about where the 'genius' ends.

As I previously stated, I disagree.

Yes, thank you. You could argue any doctor has accomplished more in life than Earl.
How does playing a game stack up to saving lives?

I'm not advocating his behavior but as a whole most people over analyze and blow his behavior out of proportion. You can't make a judgment on his character when he's in the heat of battle and is under such tremendous pressure. We examine these players under a magnifying glass and look for flaws in their character/game/ attitude etc. and use it to bash them on a public forum? pathetic. Maybe we should use that same magnifying glass and find the flaws in ourselves that make us do something like that. The same people that spend all this time bashing Earl and blaming him wouldn't spend a quarter of the time actually doing something helpful for the sport.

So, why not explain to the class how nearly every other person can act civilized during the same moments? Is it because he's a genius? Magnifying glass.. you must be blind if that's what you call it. He acts like a total jerk for the dumbest of things and you sit there and say people are scrutinizing him with a freakin magnifying glass. Pathetic is right.

You mean like not going on worldwide tv and reenforcing the stereotypes that the Americans are poor sportsman and bad losers and these "pool players" are nothing but a bunch of pool room bums. Okay I can do that.

Did you guys have any run ins with Earl at the MC?

define "run-ins"...?

yes, we were w/ him SUN @ the photo shoot for an hour.
Day 1 - in the Players Practice Room
Day 2 - various times/places
Day 3 - nope
EDIT: Today - everyone's just now geting up; although i could have sworn i heard him this morning talking down the hall @ 9am.

Ya know I might be able to deal with the antics if he wasn't missing easy shots. That was very nearly the worst I have ever seen earl play. I couldn't believe what a model of professionalism shane was when he didn't freak and club earl to death during their match.
