Pool's Dirty Secret From My Mosconi Experience

On the heels of The Mosconi embarrassment, preceeded by the miscommunication stink of Str8-Shots, preceeded by promoters pulling events, by Nazhat's release, by Bonus Ball, and, and, and... 2013 will stand as one of the most historically F'd up years ever.

1) The shit that goes on behind the scenes is insane. There's so many squirrels fighting over a small marketplace nut. The nut that has continually been driven into a corner by greed, ego, selfishness, ill-placed alliances and deception.

2) The level of passion for this game is SO strong and addictive, it's hard to get out of your blood.

3) People can give people hell that say "I know something you don't know". But if all that knew "secrets" spewed them, they'd be out of the circle. No nut for you. The dirty secrets that are released are often done so in an attempt to wrestle a nut from someone else.

These 3 things all make for a dangerous mixture that creates an "eat your own" cycle. Pro pool chooses impunity over unity. BTW, I know @ 50 things from The Cup that you don't. :p

And yet you haven't told us even one, you big meanie. Spill the beans.

My OP reeks of my being conflicted and disgusted with the game I love. I didn't/don't expect this thread to take off. I'm not trying to pretend to present myself as a know it all, because I'm not. No one knows it all in pool - that's another point I make. It's too fragmented.

I would lobby people in pool to be more forthcoming and unified, but I'd be wasting my breath. I'm about ready to burst and say F it.

Good thing my balls react predictably and I still love 'em. :grin-square:

Well, one thing for sure, there are some very big egos in the pool world. Most champion pro players have HUGE egos, which comes with self-confidence in their skills. In order for them to be successful, they must believe in themselves, and along with that comes the HUGE ego. The one exception to this, of course, is Efren. He doesn't come across at all with a big ego .

I have one final frontier to cross in my pool world, and then you can stick a fork in me. My problem is I have to work 24/7/365 on my job, and it doesn't leave much time for me to do other activities. :frown:

Yes, pool is fragmented big time. I have heard of quite a few behind-the-scenes business dealings in pool -- OFF THE TABLE -- that are quite upsetting, but I guess it is like that with any business venture. Everybody wants to be successful, and all is fair in love and pool, I guess, even if it means stepping on others in the process. :sorry:

Michaela's husband said they are worth $20KE, +/+, since i've got Ken's as well @ 20th Mosconi....

they're not for sale.

Good post Chip. We can only hope US pro pool emerges wiser and stronger from this dark period. CJ - save us! :grin-square:

Good god, there are sooo many awesome people in the pool. I just met a ton that were brought together with a promise of a great international competition. The enjoyment was off the charts, meeting passionate people from around the globe. Not a one was in bad vibe.

I've been to the last 6 nine ball Opens, I love it! But the social interaction there is a small fraction compared to The Cup's interaction. I even met Roberta Agnor's mother at The Cup - Mary Lynn. Did you know she's the Queen Baker of USA's pound cake?

KK9 <-- wonders if Mary Lynn got a saver to put a little "spice" in the US cake this year ;) J/K! Great to meet you ML!

guess who else was @ Mosconi?
Stefano sat behind us @ Day 1; 2nd row. dressed to the 9's. and damned good looking!
(this pic was from Day 2 when we all went to Best Billiards - and is no longer hanging there)

Day 2 @ 2:30pmPST. EZMoney, Hatch, KK9. seconds before Earl came out (and i use that loosely), followed by Johan. i should have snapped a pic of all 3 on the smoking veranda.... suffice it to say, that Dennis had to "pay" for this pic.

Eat your hearts out!!!!

KK9 so-oooo OWES me for this....

(Day 3 - outside of Revolution Beatles Lounge).

Having been around the pool industry and the people which make up that industry for some time it is clear a culture of non-professionalism exists and is pervasive. The thin veneer of a well run tournament with well dressed players, belies the fact that those behind the scenes rarely do pool any favors. Although you skip the details and the most of the names you highlight a severe issue. And I really liked the Ultimate 10 Ball event. But alas, when you don't do the things necessary to grow and protect the game....it won't. Being pragmatic or movers and shakers is not the industry's strong suit.
Simply put, unless someone comes and sweeps pool off its feet, what you describe will continue through our lifetimes. And as an aside, I'm pretty sure Europe keeps running over us in the Cup because they have this crazy strategy to pick JUST their best players to compete... just a thought

Well ,I see my old Freind ,Rick (Sonar) Sonner in those pic's above--I'm gonna have to start traveling around a bit --so damn wore out after traveling during the week that I can't travel for myself--if easy money can still move--I know I can--he must be 10 years older than me--LOL
