Pointed Question...

I've been thinking recently about point stock. I've seen a variety of different material used for point wood (everything from Ivory, to antler, to dymond wood). I once owned a cue with holly points going into ebony. I thought it was a great look and it turned heads without using expensive Ivory.

So here's my thought. Has anyone every used phenolic (such as juma or elforyn, etc) for point material? I have heard of the Wico veneers, and I know Corsair cues were maple sleeved with phenolic. I think my Hagan also has a strip of phenolic running through the center... However, I've never seen points made this way.

If done right, I think there's no reason it couldn't turn out well. I'm guessing it would glue up and machine down without any issues... Any input on this idea would be appreciated.

Well, both Juma and Elforyn have been used for points with much success.

But, neither are phenolic.

So, there are many types of materials that can be used for points, but I don't think phenolic would be that good of a choice.

That's good to know, thanks for the info! I just can't remember ever seeing this before. Elforyn and Juma came to mind first, as they are more suitable ivory substitutes (and would look better). However, I thought I'd throw phenolic into the mix of materials while i was asking. It might look neat, you never know ;)


The only thing I could imagine not working well would be breakoff in the points, as it's a woven material...
 
Micarta is GE's trade name for phenolic. They created it, and named it Micarta.

At least that's the way I remember it anyway.

Actually it was Westinghouse that used the name Micarta. Though
GE had products that were virtually identical.

If you look in my profile alnums there is a cue with long white points into curly amboyna, the points are Elforyn. It makes nice points, joints, ferrules etc
