I Would Not Be the Mosconi Cup Captain Again! - UNLESS...............

Why $5000 to train.

Unless you're planning on buying Kamui chalk for all the players.

Seriously, what type of training would you do or where to justify that amount.

And why do you believe that Match Room should pay it. If you get that amount, so should Team Europe. So now, there is 10K out of Match Rooms profit.

You have been invited to be the coach, your team is picked for you. The rest is pretty much up to you as coach.

If everyone put their heads together, I'm sure it wouldn't take much to figure a way to come up with that amount.

Hold a Chili Cook Off or a bottle drive etc.

I'm guessing he's calculating travel/expenses for 6 people, plus fees for the venue for practice. With players coming from all over to stay/play for a week solid, it could add up pretty quick. I'm sure they could save on some things, but not likely much.

Where are your credentials as a coaching critic???

I don't need credentials to know Jim Zorn could not coach
It's all just opinions to begin with and you know what they say about those
If your putting a bunch of pre madonnas together for a team like the Ryder Cup
That's one thing but if you want to bring in some younger players and mold them into champions that's another issue
That's where the art of coaching become valuable and Mark has proven to have that ability

I think it's a list of excuses. The US players had no reason to play as poorly as they did. If that had been a TAR match, would the excuses have been the same? Would Shane be asking for "training time" and such? Bah humbug. They played like crap.

Edit: They played like crap having a free shot at an extra $10k. Who peed in their Wheaties? They did.

I think players would respect and rather be coached by another player who has been where they are .. in the trenches, In other words someone who can actually play not just teach fundamentals . Like Efren Reyes told Mark Wilson when he went to the Philippines to gamble... You Not Ready. Just ask Mark what Efren said.

Hotel rooms and food for 7-8 people or so, for any length of time, meals, transportation would eat into 5k pretty quick for a week or so. I work as a consultant and if I am on the road I budget 125 room, 50 per diem, 75 car daily so that is 250 per day and I have not played pool yet which has costs plus also perhaps having a meeting room in a hotel all week, daily gym memberships, massage, sports psychologists and a video historian to track it all. You also need think that this is international entertainment anything done as a group would have value if it was properly filmed and added into the later Cup showing.

I will tell you how to fund it, Option 1 - let Matchroom put up some cash and let them film it and invite American companies put up some advertising. Or Option 2 - we could have a chili cook-off and ask for donations on AZ. The road to the future is option 1.

I had a great time being the Mosconi Cup Captain in London last year. We came within one match of winning and went up against "all odds" getting into that position. imho

We could see the first day that we were "outrunning the nutz" in the Mosconi Cup....the "deck" was stacked against us in every way, shape and form. Johnny Archer and I dealt with this "reality" and did everything we could to change the course of history.....and we didn't quite make it, although it could not have been any closer.

There is a way to win the Mosconi Cup for the USA Team - I would help out any way possible assure this success. Here are the changes that would have to happen for the USA Team to have a legitimate chance to win - and assure a much better competition.

1) The Captain would have the choice of two extra players that would be part of the team and give the Captain leverage to "bench" players that refused to follow training protocol. Without this factor the players can simply refuse to participate which causes direct and indirect damage to the team's overall abilities.

2) The Team would be allowed a budget of $5,000 to train for the week prior to the Mosconi Cup TOGETHER in the USA. This would give the Captain and team time to unify and train and put together a comprehensive game plan to strengthen the team as one solid unit.

3) The training week would be video taped and used as a promo to the Mosconi Cup (much like the Earl Strickland Doc was this year). This would give the players even more incentive to be productive if they were part of the show, much like Boxing does to motivate the boxers and personalize them to the fans.

4) The USA would need their own practice room so they could have privacy to train, communicate and work on what they need to with the coach on an individual basis.

5) The USA team would require paid transportation to and from the airport (we had a van pick us up, but had to take a cab back to the airport in London at a cost of over $150).

Deck stalked against us, sounds like sour grapes to me. What happen to getting up and playing your best and see what happens? The US didnt play as a team and got crushed. They should learn from it, to make excuses.

Not being facetious, to me 5K seems like a pretty modest amount. I'm thinking that a training budget would need to be at least a little more and is a week going to be enough?
So CJ, if you had your options, where would you have them train? In an environment like Las Vegas or New York? or would you take them out of a "recognized" pool environment and maybe put training in a place with not many distractions (Salt Lake City, San Antonio, Denver...?). And would training be in a hotel with a small private ball / meeting room in a hotel with a few tables and 24 hour access, or would you look for a pool hall type place with a dedicated area? Anything like any of that?

Zero Tolerance Rule

I agree there should be alternate players

1) To cover a player for a medical issue or any reason that he must drop out.
2) To cover a player for acting like an a$$hole, and we know how well that has been doing. (Sarcasm if you didn't catch it)

With that being said what is so difficult to select a team.
You choose players that will respect themselves, teamates, coach, opposing team, opposing fans and all watching.
In plain English or any language you want, you don't put shitheads on your roster.
In the contract it will be stated, If you act like an A$$hole you forfeit all monies and you are fined accordingly, Off THE TEAM... Off WITH YOUR HEAD

The zero tolerance rules. Or keep the current program that seems to be working very well
I have many years of coaching, training, and instructing. Find me 7 players like this and I will be the coach. If not, go pick your favorites because you like them or they love to hear themselves talk. (More Sarcasm)

P.S. I don't want to hear about points and they deserve to be there. If you are bad publicity you do not play, pretty simple.

Watches is he teacher

5k is very reasonable for 8 people over a week of training

Hotel, Travel Expenses and Misc. for one week. This is not cheap to do and we would also video the entire week and have a camera crew present to make sure it was top quality. 5k is very reasonable for 8 people over a week of training, coaching and strategizing.

I'll put up the 5K for the weeks training and the $150 for cab fare and all per diem associated with the cup that's not paid otherwise. And we'll travel in style, and stay at the best hotel. In return, I get to coach the team and am entitled to half the winnings. In other words, I'll stake team USA in the next cup.

Half the winnings? (6 x $20k) + (6 x $10k) x 50%. Vs $5k out of pocket. I like your math Vette! Can I be your co-captain? I'll be your shoe shine boy if you cut me in.

What does Team Europe do that Team USA doesn't?

Rather than make demands for extra provisions for Team USA, maybe try and figure out why
team Europe hangs a nasty lickin on Team USA every year.

I somehow don't believe that one week and 5 K is quite going to do it.

"Pool Playing Machine Team" - Start With the 'Ropes Course'

We would do the "Ropes Course" for starters. One week is definitely enough.....I can't guarantee a win of course - however, it would make us into a "Pool Playing Machine Team".....what more can you ask for? 'The Team is the Teacher' ;)

There is not one golf instructor of note that has won near the turnys that their pupils such as Tiger . Phil , . Arnold . Jack and a whole slew of others have won
Mark was on a winning MC team so its not his first rodeo
That's not to say it can't happen but for my dollar I'm taking the guy who's made it a profession and has become renown for it

Get Mark to enter a major tournament.. Then run a calcutta and see how much money he brings. Now put CJ in that same calcutta and compare. Enough said.

Imo the captain is just a title and formality only. Different than a coach, which is what is needed. That said, I do agree that there should be conduct codes agreed to, that if not adhered to, could result in no play or expulsion.

But to kick it up another notch, and place more responsibility in the actual players hands, if I was somehow asked to play in the Mosconi cup, (yeah right) I wouldn't even agree to it unless the team practiced together much more than a week. The team needs time to address and correct any issues, such as identifying strengths and weaknesses, and obviously performing under pressure.

For Pete's sake ( sorry Pete) why wouldn't they treat it like the rest of professional sports and actually monitor each team members stats, and make adjustments accordingly? Pff. I prefer my cake baked all the way.

You can't be serious.
