DCC Show Me The Money

The players want better payoffs and they deserve better payoffs.

Yes to the first point, and no to the second.

What the players, as a group, deserve is a function of how much money they can generate by their presence for an event producer. They are not employees who MUST show up and are, consequently, not guaranteed any kind of payment. Their participation is voluntary, and when they pay a tournament entry fee, they are making an investment. For an event like the Derby, they can look at last year's payouts and size up the quality of that investment before making it.

Nonetheless, most of the players at Derby City are amateurs who enjoy the opportunity to compete and, yes, gamble at pool. They also greatly enjoy the unique opportunity to meet and befriend other players, pro and amateur alike. It's also a chance to catch up with old friends who play pool.

It's cheaper than most nine day vacations for amateur pool players, and a lot more fun for those who live and breathe pool.

Every serious amateur should plan a trip to the Derby City Classic at some point if at all possible.

Anyone who thinks the casino isn't making 10 times what they would if the DCC wasn't there that week is living in a fantasy world.

PBF

I'm one living in a fantasy world then. I was there last year and spent a fair amount of time in the casino as smoking was allowed there. I would estimate the casino was lucky if it made 10% more money than it would if DCC wasn't there. That's even assuming no other event would replace DCC. I think it is reasonable speculation that most of those attending for DCC don't have a ton of additional disposable income to lose by gambling in the casino.

If you want to make more money playing pool, then step up and gamble for some big cash....

When your win the last game of the set, then you deserve it.....

When pool players start getting Nike endorsements and playing televised games on Sunday, then we can talk about entitlements....

Good luck with that...

There's a reason there's so many players in the banks division....because I believe it entry also includes the event pass for the DCC...all divisions...or something like that.

That's right! You and your significant other get an event pass. Greg told me he wanted to encourage people to enter the tournament. He wanted people to do more than just sweat some matches. He wanted to give people the experience that could only come from jumping up and playing. I don't have chance at coming in the money, but I enter the banks division. It's cheaper than buying a spectator pass every day, and I have a blast competing. I've also met some great people along the way. Greg has got to be this sports biggest supporter in my opinion. He gets it!

Keep up the complaints and you'll likely have no tournament to play in at all! You apparently believe that Greg makes "bank" off of these events, and therefore should add way more money! LMAO Amazing how poolplayers think they're ENTITLED to: (pick your favorite) more 'added $$$', rules that favor them, favoritism in the brackets, etc. If you don't like the variables in the DCC...don't play. Seems pretty simple, imo.

Scott you took the words right out of my keyboard. It took me about a year of running the old All About Pool Tours to realize that pool players are just never happy. They don't appreciate what is given to them. It would be so sad if the DCC went away. You can't name a tournament that has had it's run.

Greg is not a young guy and has a ton of money, equipment, and time, on the line. We should be happy that there is a pay out or even an event such as the DCC. Where would pool be without it today?

All one has to do is look at Tunica to see what the future of pool could be. When the numbers don't add up, they just don't work.

Lmao.
Do you internet monkeys know who you are talking to half of the time? It does not look like it ever. Do you know how much the guy your quoting will GAMBLE?
The guys that never get out and around but comment on everything and have seen little from on here amaze me. If it isn't in a magazine or live streamed they are completely clueless.

And then there are those of us that know too much and too many people and when we see a familiar name then we sometimes make the same assumptions.

I don't think this is the BH we think it is Brent, at least who I am thinking of anyway.

I can not agree with you more. Not just pool, but poker, video games anything where one competes, there will be online trolls. I am not saying anyone is a troll, but blanket statements about step up and gamble or anything else without full knowledge of the person/people is trolling. Sad part often it is the trolling that keeps threads going.

Are you referring to Jerry Matchin in this instance? If you are, I've know him for about 18 years. I love and respect the man, but doesn't mean I have to agree with him all the time. What's your name Joe? I'll ask him about you when I see him this week.

I've also walked into poolrooms I've never been to and gambled with anyone who wants to play. I gave up the 6 out at Jerry's place for 100 a rack 9 ball. SO, I feel like I'm in a position to know what I'm talking about. I hope that satisfies you..

Internet monkey....lmfao.

FACT is, the top(and let's be generous) 25 pool players in the world make, on average, roughly 1/5 as much as the MINIMUM nba player. The payouts HAVE to be top heavy in order to attract them and keep their traveling schedules afloat. This is their PROFESSION.

Please give me an example of any other professional sport that you can jump into with just an entry fee. Then we should expect promoters to add more money so an amateur like me can maybe make a little bit of money to subsidize my expenditures?

There was a recent controversy regarding basically the same topic about the Swanee. I'm sorry there isn't alot of money in pool....I really am. It's ludricrous to me that the best player in the world can't bring down even mid 6 figures a year...

I wasn't even referring to Jerry. I'm referring to anyone who complains about 10th place in a major tournament not covering their costs.

It sucks, but until you can figure out a way to bring in more cash deal with it.

If you want to hedge your bet, then gamble on the side. That goes for all the internet monkeys and guys who have done it all/been it all.

I hope that makes sense to you.

One thing he is not is a troll. He made a post asking why more money is not put up for the players. He did not say he could not afford to go. Huey gives a damn about POOL not just himself. He has been around the game a very long time and has seen the decline in the game. He does not need the ego boost so many of the haters need. He has played and beat most of those who you only wish you could be on a table with.

I'll second some of that, just not the haters part. Name calling isn't constructive. Jerry has more going on with his life than this forum.

Hater is too strong of a statement. "Derogatory remarks without full knowledge" would be more constructive and less insulting. Granted Huey is a friend so my reaction was too much.

I dropped around $8K in the casino the year I went.

If you really want to know what is going on....ask a more efficient question.....

What does Sullivan do for a living?

If the DCC is his only way to make a living....then....all the so-called money added is coming from the players spending money at the event or at the concessions surrounding the event.

In other words....the term "money added" is just what it's called. There is no such thing. The so-called "money added" is money that is already there or will be.

In simpler language....all your getting is your own money back. You, yourself, adds the "adding the money."
