I once had a guy pay me a $600 debt with his $1000 watch...or so he thought.

^This retails for $30K

I doubt you can get a Patek for less then $10k. But if a guy offers it in a poolhall I'd be weary about counterfeits. Except for some quartz models built in the 70's, Patek is known for hand crafted manual movements. It's the ultimate custom cue of watches.

Truth is, at the time I didn't know a dam thing about Patek Phillipe and my "holy crap!" moment was after I had it appraised.

It's the real deal alright.

I was ahead $1400 at $200-game (spotting the last 4) when he "decided" to stop paying.<This triggered my air-barrel detector.

Long story short...

him -we play again tomorrow
me -you owe me 3 games
him -i will show up, you can hold my watch, it's worth a thousand

Since he was with about 4 other guys and I was alone, I figured it would be in my best interest to accept his offer, even if it turned out to be a knockoff.

Never seen him again.

I won a diamond pinky ring playing gin.
He said it was worth $600....so I put up $400.

...appraised at $3,500

:happydance:

Well this doesn't really compare to you guys - but I did find a nice Joss cue in a pawn shop here around Thanksgiving. For $100 I got the cue, a 1 x 2 case and some tip tools. After a little research I found it's worth approx $325; not counting the case etc. It looks nearly new and plays well.

Yup. Looking at profiles on match.com. Saw a profile picture of what I thought was a to hot for me type. Next thing I knew she winked at me. We talked and ended up dating. Now we are happily married. 4-1-14 will be two years. Kinda pool related. We both probably play more pool than most couples.

That's a score! I've won cars and motorcycles, but I'll take yours any day of the week!

When I found out a cue I paid $1 for at an estate sale this year was a Harvey Martin worth $1000. It doesn't look like much but ! It was on the same block as my house. My wife called and said get out of bed theres pool stuff over here. The old man died 25 yrs earlier and his wife just joined him. She just left his not very exciting table and stick sit there.

soooo someone owed you $600 and gave you something that he didn't realize is worth 50 times that amount and you feel good about this? I can't say I'd be comfortable with that but whatever to each his own...

The guy left the watch as collateral and he didnt come back to settle up. It's not the OPs responsibility to track him down. My guess is the guy who put it up thought it was fake and was trying to get out of paying. Sounds like good karma to me for the OP. I'd feel great and sleep easy.

I bought a copy Tad once for $200....
...turned out to be a real Tad.....:happydance:

I'll get around to feeling sorry for the guy.....
....but I've been busy lately.

I don't know if I'd call Patek the "ultimate" in the watch world...

As far as manufactures goes, it's typically argued between them and Vacheron Constantine, but personally I see a few independents better.

To each their own though. I love watches..

And pool. Gotta love pool.

Great score OP. I'd have sold that and immediately bought at Patek 5124G.

Blanc Pain at a smooth $300,000? I love my Rolex but the $750 I paid for my Tag Heuer is still the best IMHO. It still keeps perfect time. Unheard of in a divers watch that was used for diving

One time I got a soda at the pool hall and played for 3 hours with my buddies.
At the end of the night she left my soda off the tab and I mentioned it and she said "don't worry about it".
HOLY CRAP FREE? R U SERIOUS?

I haven't really had any excitement beyond that.

Years ago, a guy that was about half lit and gambling in my local pool room was shooting with a cue that seemed to be in fairly rough condition. Needed refinished and a new wrap. Guy loses his a$$, and needs money to keep playing to win some back, so he offers to sell me the cue for $25. Me, being a COMPLETE NEWB, looked at the cue from about five feet away and said, "ummm, no". Next day, I go to another pool room and the owner comes up to and says, "hey, look what I bought last night." He had the cue. I said, "why'd you buy that beater?" He says, "you don't know what this is, do you?" I said, "no, not really." He hands it to me, and points out the JW on the butt, which is fairly legible, but that I did not notice from across the room last night. Come to find out, it's a Joss West, a fairly old one, and worth WAY more than the $25 I could have gotten it for. The pool room owner sends it off and gets it refurbished, and it comes back looking like new money. Perfect condition, flawless, and easily with over a grand or more. If I could get my foot around to my backside, I'd STILL be kicking my own butt TO THIS DAY! ARGH!

Station at Warner Robins AFB in 1983, at the Airman's club where an individual walks in and wants to play for $100, I did not have it, but two CMSgt's told me to play the guy and they would cover my end? I win and the guy does not have $100, so he pays me with a 1/2 carat diamond. CMSgt's tells me to keep it. I get it appraised. Comes back worth over $5,000. I sell it to the jeweler, give each CMSgt $100 and take a trip home to see the family.
