I broke and ran two racks tonight. I played another 5 and won 19-1. :D

I played third. After my match, our team was up 53-7 and our 6 was beating their 5 pretty bad! I had to leave and pick up my girlfriend, but I have a feeling the next two matches were great!
 
8b team had a bye tonight. Got together with a team mate played 2 games of 1 pocket and 3 racks of 9b. Nothing special, but got in some table time ;)

I'm the exact opposite; I've had some 9-ball break-and-runs on 7' tables but never on 9' tables.

5s don't break and run 2 racks in a set so I think you're just a tad under handicapped :grin:

I was thinking much the same thing.

I've been a five for almost 3 years now, with one break and run in 9 ball, and one rack and run in 8 ball. Total.

Now I classify myself as a mediocre 5, amongst the 5's here. But I haven't seen 7's run multiple racks here.

Yes, we play on 9 footers, which changes the equation somewhat.

this talk about break and runs got me curious...so i looked up my lifetime stats on the national website.

8 break and runs in 8 ball

2 break and runs in 9 ball.

i got to thinking why do i have a lot more in 8 ball than 9 ball? guess its because i am a notoriously slow starter. there have been plenty of times when i was on a break and run then i hear game over. even so close as havinga straight in on the 9 .dang !

i also have 2 8 ball mini slams and 1 9 ball mini slam..... no grand slam yet .:(

I think that's an anomaly (or some sort of "oly") because in general I think 9 ball is quite a bit easier on a bar box. 8 ball on the other hand, the clusters really do make it more difficult than on the 9 footer.

I can think of all kinds of lower level amateur players who could run out an occassional 9 ball rack on a bar table but never do so on a 9 footer.
 
Let me guess Dave, next week you are going to break and run out, and then break and run out and dog the 9 in the 2nd game for a measly 18 points 0 innings and say you only broke and ran one game in that weeks match....things that make you go...hmmmm lol

Now this is interesting...

Have you played a comparable number of racks of each?

Here's my guess, 8 ball is easier for intermediate level players to run out at, especially experienced players that can pick out an easy pattern and avoid having to shoot more difficult shots. In 8 Ball these players can hide their cueing deficiencies a little easier. Whereas, in 9 Ball you have to be able to pocket those more difficult shots in order to get out, or even play difficult positional shots at times.

I think the better you get the more that 9 ball run out number will increase and maybe even surpass the 8 ball run out number. Although at some point, it all becomes about how well you break.

I did that my third week, but I dogged the 9 three times lol.
If I break and run, and dog the 9; Then I didn't teeechnically break and run :grin-square:

I finally broke my habbit of getting up 20 or so points and letting up. I did that with every loss.

348 - 8 ball matches

217- 9 ball matches

i think there are a couple of factors involved.

1. like i said i am a notorious slow starter. we have a 1 1/2 hour free table time before matches start. due to my g/f ALLWAYS has something to do before we leave i never get to the pool hall until about 10 minutes before matches start. therefore i never get to warm up... just get up and start playing my match.

2. in 8 ball if i make something on the break i usaually have something to shoot at to continue the inning. by the time i get a couple of racks under my belt i have a good shot at getting a break and run.

3. in 9 ball i guess i break awful. cant tell you how many times if i make 1 on the break i have no shot to continue the inning.

4. as you know apa 9 ball is points based. i cant tell you how many times i finally get in stroke and am on a sure break and run and i hear GAME OVER !.

you would just not believe how slow i start off sometimes.

one night playing a pretty good 4 and i get down 18-2 before i start getting in stoke. after i won the match my captain said... i never would have believed it if i had not seen it. i said seen what ? he said you were down 18-2 and come back and won 38-24. he said you scored 36- to his 6 after the 1st 2 racks.

i was down 23-7 against a 5 and come back and won 38-35. not every nights like that though.

i had a 1 put me out of a qualifying board last month. would you believe she beat me 14-22 ? i had a bad night that time.

i just remembered you play napa.

last week my napa was cancelled due to apa 9 ball tri cups. a lot of napa players also play apa.

just found out this weeks napa league is cancelled to the big tournament held at the rack this time every year.
 
No 9/8 ball practice for me today.

Played 2 sets of one hole on a 4" pocket diamond pro am. Lost both, won 2 of 6 games to a strong one pocket player.
 
New APA player

Started playing in an APA 9-ball league for the first time a few weeks ago.. Buddy of mine needed a player, so I said 'ok'...
Started out as a 4, and won 18-2 in (I think) 8 innings. Got moved up to a 6 for the following week.. Won this week 19-1 (not sure of the innings, but couldn't have been more than 7 or 8..)..

Guess I'm going up again, but not sure if I'll be able to stay playing on this team/league cause my buddy is an 8..

Oh well, got to meet some new people.... :shrug:

90% of my practice is on the same thing, diamond pro am. But league is on larger pocketed Gold Crowns. Bigger pockets for league is a major difference.
