how are ya'll doing in league ?

must have been one of those nights they was firing every thing in and WHEN ! they did miss they left you hooked. i hate those nights lol.

Pretty much. I also have a bad habit of playing strong early (I won the first three racks) and then easing up. I also tend to give up on difficult shots; I had quite a few last night so I know.

Started playing in an APA 9-ball league for the first time a few weeks ago.. Buddy of mine needed a player, so I said 'ok'...
Started out as a 4, and won 18-2 in (I think) 8 innings. Got moved up to a 6 for the following week.. Won this week 19-1 (not sure of the innings, but couldn't have been more than 7 or 8..)..

Guess I'm going up again, but not sure if I'll be able to stay playing on this team/league cause my buddy is an 8..

You jumped from a 4 to a 6 in one week??? This was your first time ever playing APA? I started last summer as 4 also. It took me until the end of this past fall session before becoming a 6 and the consensus is it won't belong before I'm a 7. For you to jump two skill levels overnight...either the LO saw you play or someone who knows the LO and is trusted put a bug in his/her ear.

No 9/8 ball practice for me today.

Played 2 sets of one hole on a 4" pocket diamond pro am. Lost both, won 2 of 6 games to a strong one pocket player.

Ok Mr. 9 ball two pack, you motivated me (as well as my opponent) for my 8 ball match...

So I of course sort of laid the lemon in 9 ball again keeping it close with my opponent being a 6 and me being a cough 7. So I let him get a little too close and all of a sudden he needs 2 balls and I need 3 and it's my break. I intentionally make sure I stay down extra longer and give it a little less pop...still make 2 balls on the break, but I hook myself sigh. I kick and just miss the 2 ball, skim the 6 which bumps the two and lines up the 2 9 game over...he then proceeds after the match to say:

"It doesn't matter if I won by 1 or 20, I won that match"

ORYLY??

Sooo...that being said I decided to beat the living piss out of him in an 8 ball rematch. I have removed his name because I don't want him to be embarrassed from this absolute beatdown.

Game 1 B&R
Game 2 I break dry...he shoots 3 and misses (lol), I run out
Game 3 B&R
Game 4 I break dry again....he makes a few and misses (your luck buddy), I run out
Game 5 I leave myself a sort of difficult reverse bank on the 8 where I need to sort of jack up to avoid just hitting follow on this bank and scratching...I nut the bank and the cue ball sucks backwards into the side sigh....
Game 6 he sht racks me...I play a couple of safes (one was a 2 way shot so it wasn't marked but probably should have been), and then game over after I nut another bank on the 8

5-1, 6 innings, 1 safe, 2 B&Rs...good game you #$%$&%*^&*#@$&, how do you like dem apples???

That is all...happy Friday

Played an SL3 in 9-ball last night, and just barely squeeked out a 12-8 win.

It was one of those deals where I'd leave him long or behind balls, and he would take a wild kick and crap it in. I just had to slow down, and let him keep firing away. Eventually it struck me that while he might get something to find a hole, but the white ball could also find a hole too. And it did.

Very fortunate to get the win.

Hate matches like that!

Me too. At least it got me to engage my brain, and work my way out of a tough spot. At one point my opponent only needed a few, and I needed about 15. Coulda got way out of hand.

Very fortunate it worked out. Lesson learned!

Yes, First time ever playing APA.. I was told all new males start out as a 4, females as a 3.. I have no idea who the LO is, but he wasn't there for the match.... I have absolutely no idea how the handicapping system works, but I assume it is primarily based on a makes to misses ratio, with wins and losses adding to it to a lesser degree (?)...

It's fun to watch our players and see what works for them, and what is holding them back.
A lot of players are bad at self-diagnosing their issues.
Often what makes them lose has nothing to do with pool skills.

- One of our 6's has a pretty good mental game and doesn't get rattled much,
played another 6 (who is borderline 7) who rattles easily, and just demolished him.
Some players, once they get down a little, they are mentally done.
The wheels fall off, the whole bicycle catches on fire and plunges off a cliff.

- Our 3 played a guy last week, she has the best fundamentals I ever saw. Makes me jealous.
20-0's him because she feels confident against the same rank or lower, especially if they're friendly.
Got moved up to a 4 though really she's still a 3(ish).

Playing an older, higher ranked, intimidating woman who has a rep for sandbagging (which isn't true),
She has no confidence and missed routine balls and lost. She asked indirectly that I look at her mechanics
to see if something is off, which wasn't the issue. She just freaks out a little if she feels the heat.

Part of it is, she is touchy about getting advice and never calls time out.
Our male 2 is nervous vs. almost everyone but will ask for timeout almost every rack,
and does great when he follows advice and just keeps his spirits up.

- We have a 6 who is a real student of the game, awesome fundamentals, table at home, does drills, etc.
For a few shots at a time he looks like a 7 and will eventually become one.
But mental game is very rough, gets very pissed with himself, and has a horrible habit of blaming
the equipment on everything. He once said, swear to god, "I can't make a ball, the @#$@#@ pockets
are too big!!" ...he hates the light cue ball at the place where we play league. Every rattled ball
is the pocket's fault even though they play pretty easy. He said "I can't stand kamui mediums
because it's so inconsistent, half the time the ball goes where you want and half the time
you miss by a diamond." ...he didn't want to hear that's not the tip. He said "these tables
make half your breaks jump off the table if you don't hit it perfect".

I've learned not to argue with him and to try to keep it lighthearted. He squeaked a win
vs. a 6 with less book knowledge and bad position play.

Yeah men start out at SL4. But I don't think its mathematically possible in the formulas and algorithms in the handicapping system to jump two spots after one week. However, it is my understanding that the LO can manually change any handicap as they see fit. That has to be what happened IMO. When a player's handicap is questioned you can circle the player's name on the scoresheet for the LO to take notice. Maybe the other team's captain is buddy-buddy with him. Anyway its easy to tell the guys who should be 7's if you know what youre looking for. Congrats on the wins. Good luck.

I see 1-3 put up against high level players now and then. We have 1 person who is way ahead of anyone else in the 9b league. There are other 9s in the league, but none in his class. Now and then teams put a low level against him, rather than wasting one of thier best knowing they will lose. He only plays 4 or 5 matches a season, but his life time record is 88 matchs with 84 wins. I know atleast 2 of those losses were when he played a low level.

Its called 'throwing off'.. Its a common used practice that im sure most league players on here are quite familiar with, but used especially when wins actually matter (Regionals and Nationals)..
In TAP league, we have a very strong team. Our best lineup consists of a 7,6,5,5, and a 2 (bringing us to exactly 25, the handicap max for TAP). Depending on how deep the other team is, I will (Im the captain) occasionally throw off against the other teams best player, If I feel they arent that deep as a team, or they have an absolute world beater (for a league player). During regular seasonal league play I never do it because all my numbers are very strong players for their handicap levels, but it makes no sense to 'match-up' our best vs their best If we have the deeper team when at Nationals. If im going to have to shoot my 2 (and she can play) if we go to 5 matches, she knows shes gonna get thrown under the bus to make way for the rest of us (shes cool with it, and actually kinda likes the challenge ).

We had a new player go from SL4 to SL7 after one week. Our captain appealed to the LO, got him lowered to SL6, which is where he stayed (and where he belonged).

The system needs several scores to establish its baseline in order to even get close. New players that play very well mess with the formula.

Thank you.. I have no delusions of staying where they started me, so it was expected, and a few people actually told me I'd go up to a 6 after the first week... This league is out of my area a bit, and is a 20-30 min drive to get to any of the host locations, so I'd prefer to be raised up so that I can actually play a little when im called upon to play.. Nota whole lot of fun showing up and being done in less time than it took me to get there, lol...

Also, every table in this league is a Valley 7ft'r, with BIG pockets.. I'm used to playing on bigger Diamond tables with 4.25" pockets... The slowness of the tables throws me off a bit at first, but for the most part it doesnt matter, cause it seems like everything I throw even near a pocket goes in. All I need is a look at a ball and I should be able to make it.. I had at least 5 or 6 shots last night that had absolutely no business going in the hole (lol). I just kinda chuckled and shook my head a bit cause I had no business still being at the table. My buddy even said a few times, 'that $hit wouldnt have went in on your tables!'. I nodded in agreement cause I knew it d*mn well to be true :o

Oh well, like I said, its nice to get out a bit and meet other people once in awhile cause I think im becoming sort of a recluse, (Howard Hughs like...)

Wow! Ours will be over midday Sunday. We don't start on Friday night for some reason. I would rather play Friday night then again at like noon on Sat.

Played in NAPA league (8-ball) this afternoon. NAPA is a new league in our area, this was the 3rd week for us.. I really do not like starting at 1pm (way too early for pool for me), but I kinda sorta like this league and it's format

Played fairly bad. Couldn't get my break going, no break n runs, just all around couldn't seem to focus.. Still won 7-2, but it was very ugly....

i would gladly take an ugly 7-2 win . you going to 7 huh ? your handicap must be in the high 80's low 90's.

i played in my double jeapordy tonight. again i got there just 10 minutes before match time.

i played another 5 in 8 ball 1st match and lost 4-0. i just could not get it going.

they threw the same guy later in 9 ball and i jumped up saying i got this. he is a 6 in 9 ball and i am a 5. i won 15-5. payback mf'er. :grin-square:
