twist the wrist

I am trying to learn how to play pool. I like to watch others play. I see a lot of players "kinda twist their wrist" as they are shooting. What is this all about. I did not think that this is a good idea.

It ISN"T a good idea at all.

The more movement you have, the more difficult it is to be consistent.

From the sideline, it kinda looks like they are trying to "steer" the ball into the pocket.

If you aren't set up and aligned proerly, you have to do all kinds of extra stuff to steer the cue in a straight line. Much better to learn how to stroke it straight to start with.

Some people do this on purpose (e.g., to apply sidespin during the stroke), but it is usually just a technique flaw. For more info, see the following online videos:

NV B.33 - Back-hand swoop and twist ball-turn techniques
NV B.34 - Using back-hand swoop to get maximum english

For more info and details, see the stroke swoop resource page.

Most likely its bad technique. I had the same habit before and have had to work hard to work it out of my stroke, but sometimes when playing lazy i will find myself doing it again

I'm familiar with backhand swoop but have never seen it performed to the extent in the videos above. Would the same technique be effective to the same degree on a Standard Diamond Pro table with Simonis?

I've twisted balls before but he put a fairly large masse on the object and I just don't think it can be done the same way on a real table.

it is something that happens naturally when you are trying to keep the cueball on a straight line....(not a curving arc) and trying to apply maximum spin. watch this vid and you can see a few instances where I spin the crap outta the CB without losing control. Many folks on AZB will tell you this is a bad thing?....nah.....it happens naturally, not something you "try" to do.....don't sweat it.....BTW, watch SVB play and pay attention to his back hand....then let someone tell you its wrong! :)

Did you watch the whole video? He's f*cking with our heads and using a trick 8-ball that has a weight in it so it has an eccentric roll. What he is doing is impossible with a regular ball, and he goes on to explain the trickery he uses.

I couldn't watch with sound and I thought maybe the side pocket shot was due to a short slate shelf since it basically fell in.

I used to twist my shaft when stroking.... When I was in high school. LOL.
I thought it added "juice" to the shot.

Man, that sounded filthy.

Seriously, it is bad technique. The butt should be cradled lightly.

Dang. There I go again....
