Has SBE lost its luster since changing venues?

Man I remember every year around this time the forum was buzzing with SBE threads. Ever since the venue change seems like there's less threads about SBE.

Feel free to give your thoughts and especially what days you will be attending. I would love to meet and put a face to the names of azb'ers.

I was gonna suggest meeting around JB's to bring more traffic his way but for fear of well let's say... Arguments? Perhaps we should choose a more neutral setting.

Man, I'm so excited to go to SBE this year!
I'm looking forward to meeting all the great supporters of the pool industry that I've only had the chance to work with online.

It's gonna be a lot of fun! I'm also looking forward to going to Sandcastle Billiards.

The valley forge convention center was a nice place, but I still look forward to going. I enjoy the convention where ever it takes place. I agree it seems that there is less buzz here on az about the convention.

Professor Q Ball Booth

Well I'm working out of the Professor Q Ball Booth - Running and doing coverage of the event so stop by and say Hi!

Do I miss the old valley forge expo center...sure. We didn't know how good we had it. That being said last I checked over 800 people signed up for the amateur. It was packed last year. It's still pool heaven lol I think at this point you could hold this event in a barn in the middle of a swamp and people would still come. lol I hope there are some changes this year. I would love to see the pro arena get closed off again and this means I have to pay for it that's fine. I liked it better when it was dark and quite instead of the loud lunch room they turned it into last year but other then that I was pretty happy with the new location and am jacked to get there tomorrow night!

Other then the fact that there are no hotels or restaraunts within miles of the place the thing I miss most about VF was the action pit. A hundred people would gang around a table and bet on the racker/breaker. I'm still gonna go cuz i'm a pool junkie but the new venue is like a hores with three broken leggs:angry:

This post is why you can't take everything you read on the Net as da word of gawd.

There are 4 hotels located at the same intersection abiut a mile up the road, but still within the business park/Raritan Ctr. There are 2-3 more hotels within 3 miles.

The action pit was in full swing last year. The main table with a big crowd was still there. When Dennis Hatch had action with Kenny the Russian, it had plenty of ppl sweating it. The only complaint about the new pit area is that its a lil cramped, compared to VF.

The old VF location was nice. The best and unusual thing about it was that 2 small hotels were attached to the convention ctr. Unfortunately, this is a rarity. My friend, who is a cuemaker from FL, who goes to a lot of conventions due to his day job says that he almost never sees a setup like theold VF.

I'll echo that.

I gotta agree. There are plenty of hotels with in a few miles. I didn't book mine until 2 weeks a go and I had no problem.it was nice not having to drive at the old expo center. I would park my car Wednesday and not move until Sunday lol

It's regrettable some people on AZ have nothing better to do except complain, especially before the event. Whether it's BB, TOI, CSI, or off colored billiard balls, it never fails.

I'm looking forward to this years expo.

Harold's, a Jewish style deli is walking distance for those staying at the hilton garden inn.

If you need help with the area, there are plenty of locals here.

Now, get off my lawn.

First of all you're wrong about everything you said but I gotta say I like the new venue better. Everything on one floor is so much better and at night there are more tables open to play on and still lots of action.

There's a lot to be said for no more stairs. Lol I ain't getting any younger and those stairs got brutal to the end of the weekend. Specially for my buddy who isn't in the beat of health

My booth is perfect. We have four booths and lots of open space. Thinking about getting a table to stay in stroke.

There is almost never an argument at my booth. I back up what I say so either I prove it in person or the net warriors turn into friendly kittens when they get there.

SBE rocks regardless of the venue. The old spot was sweet but life moves on. Now we rock the new spot.

I found it difficult to find open tables to play/practice on between the expo matches and the TAP league matches going late into the night.

The old VF convention center had a cool vibe and the fact that the Marriott and scanticon hotels were attached to the convention ctr, was a huge plus, if you were lucky enough to book a room in one before they sold out,

Nothing like being able to walk up to your room and cool out whenever you needed to have a break or, maybe even better, being able to walk down and sweat gambling pit action round the clock. Having the hotels attached also allowed you to get some heat behind your eyeballs courtesy of your favorite beverage without worrying about finding a ride back to your hotel.

But, alas, times have changed and to me, the new venue has some real benefits.

First, any place is better than that cold trucking warehouse/convention ctr that was used in VF as a replacement for when the orig vf venue became unavailable a few years ago.

As cleary said, all on one floor is a real good thing at the new venue.

also, that inevitable fry-o-lator stink assaulting your nose and lungs at the bottom of the VF stairway was nearly enough to kill an ox. And the table lighting downstairs was, well, it was the ceiling lights that were about 100 feet up. n-g.

I'm happy to report the vf fry-o-lator and its smell has been replaced by a team of cute girls offering outstanding pastries and coffee from a local bakery.

hotels, I'm thinking aren't even a mile, maybe just 1/2 mile and there's a few. btw, don't know why they aren't listed on the sbx site but extended stay America for $89 per night has rooms with actual kitchens incl a full sized fridge and it's very modern. It's one of the ones right in the park.

All things considered, I think the new venue is a decent replacement and while there will always some aspects that can be better, to a large extent we are all in control of how much fun we'll have.

For me, and as usual, I already know it's gonna be a blast. And, selfishly, I'm pretty happy about the change to Edison as that saves me about 2 hours driving each way. :)

travel safe everyone. see you in joisey.

best,
brian kc

Nice post, Brian!

Although there were some nice bennies to the old VF venue, I actually like the new Edison NJ venue. The "everything all on one floor" thing is really cool. And the food's better, too.

From my perspective, sadly, there is no 14.1 Challenge / booth this year. And, work commitments prevent me from taking time off this week, so I can only go during the weekend (Saturday & Sunday).

With no booth duties, I'm free to meet up with some AZBers, spend quality time in friends' booths, partake in a little action, etc.

I'll see everyone on Saturday! Ring game, anyone? :)

The old venue was far easier to get to for me. this one is an hours drive further away. with that said, I wouldn't miss it. I look forward to the SBE every year.

Ugh I forgot about the fryer smell lol I couldn't even fathom eating that food after smelling it for a few days. On that note I thought the little place to eat was better quality and lower priced then the expo center

We can get an action pit going. You just need 2 guys with gamble and cash, plus a few good players that dont dump. I tried to get it going last year, people didnt seem to have it. There were only a few big sets and those were pooled money for a couple thousand. There was surely other big games that were not as publicized.

I will be looking to play short sets of 9 or 10 ball for 100-300 a set with non-world beaters. Just trying to have fun, not looking to get rich.

If the guy with the barbeque is back be sure to check him out, it was pig heaven. The other food isnt bad and not too pricey.

I got the breaker for 40!!!
