WOW shot from Mika

hang-the-9

About 10 minutes ago Mika made one of the best shots I've seen.

The 8 and 9 were tied up and he had an angle on the 7, I though he'll hit with draw into the balls to free them for a shot.

Nope, he hits the cueball as break speed, and goes 5 rails to just touch the 9, leaving the cueball 2 inches from the 8 for a shot.
My angles and ball positions are not exact except where the 8 and 9 were, I think the cueball was less sharp on the 7.

It was definitely a great shot for any highlights reel. He really pulled a rabbit out of his hat on that.

Gonna guess he just hit it so hard that the new(ish) felt didn't catch the draw as fast as he thought. No one would ever shoot it that way. Still a sick shot, nevertheless!

I'm 95% sure he played it that way, he hit it hard. If he was just trying to draw into the balls directly he would have hit it at 1/4 the speed.

was it possible to break that cluster after hitting the first rail? probably drawing it and putting a lot of left spin?

Yes, of course he played it that way. There is no way someone of his caliber would hit a shot 18 feet longer than necessary accidentally!

That's awesome. Does anyone have a video?

From the setup, of course he played it that way. If you play it that way and hit it right, the 8 winds up directly in front of the pocket and you are out. If you play the breakout one rail, you hit the 8-9 from the bottom and at best you get a table-length shot on the 8. At worst you get nothing.

Edit: The cue ball's path is a standard four-rail kick to the corner. Those kicks naturally come short of the pocket, so it's actually a pretty big ball to hit the 8-9 from the top. You can hit the fifth rail or you can hit directly into the 9. It's a big ball.

The brilliance here is (1) seeing the shot in a breakout context, (2) recognizing its advantage over the one-rail breakout given the way the balls are laying, and (3) executing it in a match. Mika is definitely capable of all three. This was brilliance, not luck.

My first thought also, It is a lot easier to get to them one rail from top, he got lucky did not scratch in side, and two corners. Ask him, he is the type of player that tell you what he thought.

For those wanting to see a video, this happened on a live stream earlier. If TAR posts the video, and I'd be they will, it will be the Mika vs Corr match at the 1st annual Nick Varner Classic.

Hopefully Justin posts the videos, and soon :) Based on his comments in the stream, he has a lot of TAR archives to go through and post, so who knows when.

He may have a little 3cusion knowledge, and saw a path that would lead to the corner.
It's common in that game to figure out routes that send the CB to end up in the corner
after 4 or 5 rails.

Mika just shot a breakout that made Jcin clap in the booth.

Mika played some amazing shots tonight. He jacked up on the end rail and fired a three ball in, force followed all the way down table to go into some balls. Mika and Chip both are playing like beasts right now.

Both are coming back tomorrow. Mika will be in the hotseat match at 5PM Eastern against the winner of the Archer match.

Brackets as of when I left:

Probably 10 years ago I watched Mika play some 3 cushion at the DCC. He clearly knew his way around a carom table.

I just saw this shot on the overnight loop. The 10 ball was in the way of the simple draw shot. Great shot!
