Mezz Shafts

I know that shafts are quite the gnarly subject
for cue makers. I used to play exclusively with a
Predator 314-2 shaft. It was gold. I ended up
breaking the thing on accident (I have broken
a few on purpose/out of rage but in this case
it was an accident) and I was never able to replace
it. Sure I got a couple different 314-2 shafts but
they never felt the same. I played with a Z2 for
a while but eventually went back to good old solid
maple shafts.

Well, I have heard a little buzz lately about the
remarkable quality of Mezz shaft wood. I have
never played with one. I want to hear a cue
makers opinion: would you recommend a Mezz
shaft over your own?

If deflection is no issue for you, stay with your good old solid maple shafts.

"Good LD characteristics" and "solid maple sound and feel" are almost mutually exclusive. The more you have of one, the less you have of another. I love the feel of good solid maple shafts but I play with a Predator Z2. LD shafts are great for newer players because they're not used to compensating for crazy cue ball deflection.

So there you have it, I prefer the feel of a solid wood shaft but use an LD shaft. Of course, this is my opinion but its based on experience and a bit of common sense.

Dennis Searing probably has the shaft making technique down better than anyone right now as far as quality, taper...etc. I was at this shop a little over a year ago and he said "Mezz is making the best shafts out there", referring to all the other LD manufacturers.

I had been in the market for one for quite a while and finally bought a Mezz cue about 6 months ago. I have since bought two more and about six more shafts.
