On The Road Again with Perfect Aim....

I got about 10 but don't use them all at the same time.

There's always 3 things to fall back on.

Tank's empty
Didn't get no sleep
Back hurt

1. I still sleep on 4" foam from having my ribs crushed and lung punctured 3 years ago. Hurts when I break sometimes.

2. Had 2 surgeries on my right knee. I'm getting the fluid drained tomorrow i hope. About the size of a musk mellon tonight. No Miniscus at all after last surgery.

3. 2 bulding disks in my neck. Can hardly turn it. Surgery scheduled next month. trying therapy right now but the therapy guy said good luck with that after the first session.

4. Have siezures from the concussion 11 months ago. Woke up about 30 times last night. Sometimes from a seizure and other times because my neck hurts too much.

5. Seizure med side effects are just about as bad as the seizures except the meds won't kill you. The seizures will. Still have some seizures even taking the meds. Wake up exhausted on those days. If I'm at a tourny .....Oh well. Suck it up and do the best I can.

6. Shoulder surgery on my right shooting shoulder about 3 1/2 years ago. I don't know if it will work like normal ever again. When it gets sore, which it does If I play too much, I have to shorten up my stroke and just do the best i can.

7.I fell in Birmingham, Al, about 2 1/2 years ago tearing the miniscus on my left knee. It kind of gets caught in the knee joint if i turn wrong and i almost fall. If I pinch it too hard i have to wear a knee brace or I can't walk or play pool. Still hurts but Oh well.
Suck it up and play.

8. I'm diabetic, but unless a person is diabetic you would not understand how devastating this disease is with the ups and downs of blood sugar. Emotions go off the charts also if it's too high or too low. Blurry vision, dizzy, sick to your stomach amd allot of other fun stuff.

9. I'm 61 in 2 months. I have all the other problems that all 61 year olds have. Either I accept it and do the best I can do or i can just quit. Quit is not an option.
I just love the game too much and I can even kick someones ass now and then like this last weekend. Ask Cory Duell. he probably didn't feel good. Couldn't make a ball.
I just got lucky:rolleyes: Anyone can beat anyone in a race to 6, alternating breaks on a bar table. All kidding aside, Cory is a real gentleman and a pleasure to be around. Great for the game of pool as is SVB.

10. Only got about 5 hours sleep after driving 11 hours. Trouble finding my room. Mix up at the hotel. Randy H came back, woke me up and told me I had .5 minutes to get down there and play Cory D. I couldn't even hardly read the numbers on the balls.
That's my excuse for winning. Oh ya, i forgot, I don't need one for why i won?

11. I was so tired that I just said that my tanks was empty. It really was. And went to bed to get my 5 hours of sleep.

12. I broke my back in 1999. It hurts all the time a little bit. Sometimes allot. This weekend it was allot. When I wasn't playing I had 2 icebags. One on my lower back and the other on whatever hurts the most on the rest of my body. I move it around.

13. I have all kinds of reasons not to play. But the only way to get this cue stick out of my hands will be to pry it out when I'm dead.
If i knew I was going to live this long i would have been a little more careful.

14. About a month ago I fell on the steps and landed on one step with my tail bone, another on my neck and the other step somewhere in the middle of my back. Couldn't hardly get out of bed for 3 days. I didn't play in a tourny that weekend. I couldn't even stand up hardly. And it only hurt when I breathed.

15. On the way to Denver 4 weeks ago I spun into the ditch and did a Dukes of Hazard over a road in the median strip on the interstate. Almost had to wear the neck brace all the time except when i played. Reinjured my neck.

I'm tired. Tank is empty. Just drove 7 hours after giving a 5 hour lesson today in Fargo with only about 5 hours of sleep.

Oh darn. Another excuse:eek:.

Just kidding around but these are real issues that I face trying to play this game we all love.

At this time I can only do one lesson per day also. When I get done with one lesson My tank is empty.

Darn. There I go again.:D

I have never said you didn't love the game or that you weren't a very good player...in fact I made a good bit of money on you before you ever came on AZB, so your not as under the radar as you think for me.

My point was/is, that coming on here and not giving anyone any credit that beats you is poor sportsmanship IMO. It's not right that a player that beats you or his friends has to read that he won only because you were hurting or tired, or there was too much smoke.

I'll give you credit for pushing on with all your health problems, but I'm 73 and can give your health list the orange crush. I'll tell you what, if you ever come down to Central FL I'll play you on a Valley 7' box race to 7 nine ball with MR for $200 a set post 1k. Not saying I'll beat you, but I know I'll make you pucker up a bit. If you do beat me I'll shake your hand and say you beat me because you were the better player. You won't here a peep about my health problems. Good luck to you on your travels and with your up coming surgery. Johnnyt

I got a bad roll, someone walked in front of my shot, there was a mark on the cue ball, I have a tooth ache. I think there is a pool shirt something like that... Most of us lose focus on a shot for some reason or an other, And my wife doesn't even want to hear my excuses...

Like JohnnyT said, respect your opponent on and off the court. You were top dog in the Midwest in your early years. And now at 61 and falling apart, It gets much harder to focus on every single shot. But I'm sure most of us could only wish we could play your level at 61.

excuses

I had someone tell me once that excuses are like bowel movements........everyone's got them and they usually stink. There are many players I know that have some sort of physical limitations......most dont come on a forum and air them publicly.

Yea that's true but I don't think that's what Johnnyt is whining about. Johnnyt is right. I don't think Gene realizes that he seldom if ever gives any props to the guys who whip up on him. I see many top players just like Gene who seem to always make up excuses about why they lost. Gene isn't alone as far as that goes but he reaches a lot more people by his regular posting so it grinds on some people that he doesn't give props to the other player.

There are a FEW pro players who regularly congratulate opponents who bested them and it is always nice to see a bested player give credit to those who vanquished them.

And you're right, most players don't come on public forums and talk about their physical limitations, their drug dependencies or their lack of ability to make a living in this sport. I feel like Gene is giving all of us a lesson as to what is going through the head of a person, so driven, that they have given up everything else in their life just to play this game. I'll put up with Gene's whine about his health and encourage him to give credit where credit is due and just be thankful that I get to hear these incredible road stories as they happen.

Me, Johnnyt whining? I'm hurt. :p.

I, believe it or not, was stopping by to congratulate Gene after seeing he had a good showing. So good job Gene, one hell of a field and some pretty good players ahead of you.

To tell you the truth, all of the excuses and heartaches sours me. Most people know your background from previous posts but it gets real old hearing it over and over again. I come here to get away for a few minutes and clear my head, I'm not tuning in for the negativity. I think Gene would be better accepted if he came and told his story without the past tense cropping up over and over. I love how my man Bart handles himself, post game. How did it go Chris? "Man.... I played rough boy, had a couple rolls that didn't go my way, but man, he played good". End of story. If he lost, he lost. If he wins? Same as when he loses. Doesn't say, "My allergies are killing me, I couldn't sleep, my tooth is killing me, ETC....". He may something about it to me or a few others, but you'll never hear it in public. Even to me, he's not making excuses, he owns up to it.

Details? Hell yeah, gives us details and tell the story! Just leave all the negative waves out.

Well here goes the 4 Bears story............

I had payed my entry fee about 3 months ago so the worm is dangling in front of my face even though I'm not sure i can even handle the trip.

I got a traction unit for my neck as part of my therapy and a compression sleeve for my right arm and these 2 things really help.

I just had to go, so at the last minute i loaded up the car and took off.

I had a room reserved but on the way there I talked to Big Truck and found out he had a guy in a room with 2 beds that I could room with. This would save me about half on the room.

He had the girl at the desk set a key aside for me so I could just give them my name and go to the room. The problem was that girl left and the new girl didn't know anything about it. Ray had left a message on my phone with the room number but my phone wouldn't work after I got past Fargo a little.

I got there about 3:00 AM. Thinking that the 9 ball started at 7:00 PM on thursday. I thought I had plenty of time to sleep.

The phones were not working in any of the rooms so they couldn't call Ray to find out the room number. Finally after about 2 hours the security guard went to Rays room and found out the room number.

Got to the room about 5:30 AM and randy told me he thought the 9 ball started at 12:00. I told him that I thought it was at 7:00 PM and he said he would get up at 11:00AM and check it out.

I only got about 5 hours sleep and randy comes back and said; you got to get out there in 5 minutes or your going to forfiet. He said you play Cory Duel.

I hopped up and wet my hair down a little and took my siezure meds but didn't eat anything. The results were not good. When i got to the table my vision was real blurry. One of the side effects are blurry vision but usually I eat something with them so the blurry isn't so bad. After about an hour it clears up.

I'm kind of mad at myself. here I got a chance to play Cory Duel in a good tourny and I havn't had enough sleep. Plus no food with the meds and and I can hardly see the numbers on the balls from one end to the other.

Oh well. Just got to do the best I can do.

It started out a little rough. I missed a couple of shots and Cory jumped out ahead 3-1.

He then broke and didn't get out and I won that game. Then I broke and ran and I was right back in the match.

Everyone was having a little trouble with the arimith valley cue ball. it plays kind of wierd compared to most cue balls.

I didn't make any more mistakes and Cory got out of line a few times and I ended up winning the match 6-4.

Driving 11 hours to get there and only 5 hours of sleep I would have never predicted this outcome.

But I knew the rest of the day would be a chore. Not much time if any to go rest in the room. they kept it going right along.

To be honest I can't even remember who knocked me out. The whole day was just kind of a blur.

I should have lost the 2 matches before I got knocked out but they just played a little worse than i did. They all could have went either way. It was kind of ugly. Plus again allot of these players were having trouble with that cue ball.

I got some sleep and played at 10:00AM the next morning and lost my first match and was done. I got $100. I think it was 7th and 8th. But not sure.

Now i got back to the room to rest a little. The 8 ball tourny started at 8:00PM.

I made the final 32 so there was a redraw and everyone started out fresh. But now there was deffinitely no so called easy matches. These guys can all play.

I played my first 2 matches and won. Played pretty good. Now my next match was Shane on the stream table and I have to admit I kind of got the jitters. I can usually control my emotions pretty good but I was nervous.

The score was 4- 3 Shane and he broke dry. I ran out. This made it 4-4. I broke the next rack and could have gotten out with stripes or solids. I had a little tougher shot with the stripes to start with and missed the first shot. Tried to shoot the ball inbetween 2 others balls and just skimmed one.

Shane got up and did what Shane does. he makes you pay for your mistakes and ran out and then broke the next rack and ran that out finishing me off.

But now I was fired up. After being in the fire with Shane anyone else seemed to appear a little easier even though most of these players can really play.

I started mowing through the field one at a time. Until i got to play my friend Rory Henderson. Great player and a fierce competitor.

You need to get ready for a battle when you play him.

Rory lost his first match so he has been playing nonstop all day. I won my first 2 and then played through the losers so we both have had a long day.

We both took turns not getting out and giving the game to the other. But like i said rory is a tough competitor and when it counted at the end he broke and ran out to finish me off.

Unfortunately Rory had already had a long day and now had to play Cory Duel. Both Cory and Shane had stayed on the winner so the advantage was definitely with them as far as energy level is concerned.

I didn't stay and watch the matches. I had given it all I had. Now I just wanted to getto the room and lay down.

On the way through the Casino I got lost and had to ask directions. It's not very big but that is how exhausted I was. The last little stretch to the room my one leg was cramping up.

I'm just saying how I felt. Not making an excuse why I lost Johnnyt .

When you come through the losers bracket or most of it most players would be wore out.

I'm just happy to be almost 61 and have the energy to still get it done as often as I do.

Great tournament as usual and i want to say a huge thanks to Ray P and the other tribal members for making this such a great event again.

Congrats to Shane, Cory and Rory for taking the first 3 spots.

Congrats to all the rest of the players. They all shot their butts of. I saw the best bar table pool I've seen in a long time.

Back home and taking care of business............

It sure feels good to be back home. But can't wait to go someplace again.

I'm having what they call an E.M.G. tomorrow to try and figure out how best to stop these darn seizures.

I quit taking the seizure medication because it was making my vision blurry. Plus it makes me feel like I'm in a fog.

I'm signed up for that tourny in Pueblo, Co on the 25th thru the 27th but it doesn't look good again.

My neck keeps waking me up with pain while I'm laying down.

The traction unit for my neck makes that manageable and the compression sleeve for my right arm helps me keep the strength. i wear a baseball glove on my right hand to help with the grip.

Played pretty good last weekend so you never know I might take off again. I have a few players wanting lessons on the way there so the long trip would be chopped up into 3 days if i go.

These events in Colorado are all in no smoking places. Is that sweet or what!

Plus they are run just about as good as any tourny i've ever played in.

Anything that Mark G. is involved with usually is.

Great job with these tournys.

Hopefully I'll see you all there.

One man had a van and the road.............

Just got a good close look at the road.............

I quit taking my seizure meds on Monday. the withdrawals were pretty bad. In fact i saw the Doc today for an EMG today and he said I should try to take just 1/2 of a pill at a time.

He scheduled a sleep study where I go in and sleep and they hook me up to monitors kind of like testing for sleep apnea. They are booked up until June 4th.

Got back home and went to Sams Club shopping and could hardly stand being around allot of people. So when I got home I figured it would be a good time to start taking 1/2 of the kepra.

It really took the edge off of how I was feeling.

Then Joseph called me from Ohio and I kidded around with him that I would take the bike to the post office to mail his video. The way things are going for me lately, I'll probably wipe out on the bike next.

I made it to the post office and on the way back I bought a cookie. Then I bought a diet Pepsi from a vending machine in front of a store.

As I was riding back to the house I decided to eat the cookie on the way back. I have the Pepsi in my front right coat pocket kind of hanging half in and half out. The cookie in my right hand and my left hand on the handle bar of the bike.

The Pepsi started to fall out of my pocket. Half of the cookie in my mouth and the other half in the hand I'm trying to grab the Pepsi with.

The front handle bar twisted out of my left hand and jack knifed and I fell on the ground like a pancake. I was going about 10 miles an hour.

I didn't move right away because I was trying to figure out if I was hurt real bad. I knew I was hurt. My right hand is bleeding pretty good from the palm. I tried to get my left hand over to break the fall but I just couldn't twist that far on such short notice. And it was pretty short and quick.

A lady that seen me fall called an ambulance right away. She came out to help me. As soon as she said she called the ambulance I told her to call them back and get it cancelled. I told her I was OK. She replied you didn't look very good falling down. I told her I got pretty luck. She called them back but they still came anyway but I was already home about 4 blocks away.

Trying to keep my head from getting busted I held my neck pretty stiff as I fell. This didn't work out very well because the neck is really sore now. I might have been better off whacking my head.

Then there was the right knee. It took the full force of the fall. The left knee was on the other side of the bike. I've had 2 surgeries on the right knee and there is no miniscus so the good news is I can't tear the miniscus up and it ain't broke. i can walk on it pretty good. My left rib cage came right down on the handle bar that was sticking straight up as i hit the ground. The ribs hitting there might have saved me breaking and arm or hand for sure. Those ribs are sure sore though on the left side. They only hurt when i breath.

I'm pretty sure I can ride the bike but I need to keep both hands on the handle bar.

I got the ice bags out now. I know that program all to well.

Do they make training wheels for a 26" bike?

Maybe I should get one of those 3 wheelers with the basket on the back? Like a big tricycle. No motor.

As I'm typing my right hand is getting a little swollen and hurts pretty bad.

Time to ice that. :frown:

I think the 1/2 of the seizure pill I took affected my thinking and coordination. I know that i need to make allot of corrections once I type something. Maybe I need to slow down with everything.

And this little car that I complain about how it handles. Maybe it's the guy driving it.

Getting a little sick to my stomach also. Might be from the pill and it might be from getting my whole body kind of slammed.

I'll know more tomorrow when I wake up. I'll know for sure what body parts need the ice more. :p:(

The good news is I'm sure I can still play.

I just don't know when.

One man had a van on the road......virtually on the road...........lying on the road.

After the motorhome fell on me 3 years ago they called me road kill.

That's one name I never want to live up to again. Or not live up to.

Whatever ..........I think you get the point.....................

On second thought I'm glad I didn't hit my head.

Good decision trying to eat a cookie and drink a sofa while riding a bike.

I agree with others sentiments. Your Health is what it is. I applaud your passion for pool but you sour it somewhat with all the excuses. Chances are, at your age, the diabetes and all the past injuries, you'll likely have to live with most of the problems.

I am 57 and a below the knee amputee. I've played league a few times when it really, really hurt. I've never hinted as using this as an excuse for playing poorly or losing, what an insult to my opponent. The leg isn't going to grow back and I'm not going to find the fountain of youth and shed 30 years. Some days, it would be easier to list what doesn't hurt than to inventory what does. If the pain or limitations get to where I cannot perform and enjoy myself, I'll quit before I start whining. Fact is, I'm working hard on my game and expect to get even better. Those young pups need me to have those problems to even dream of having a chance to compete with me. Lol

Geno Geno.... there not enough neck/elbow/knee/hand/rib body wrap bandage material (or time to put it all on) for you to keep doing this to yourself. Just get to the sports store and get you a football uniform (with all the pads.... and a cup) and then go by a motorcycle store for the full faced Shoei helmet (with flipped gown shield) some steel toed boots and some leather gloves. I know you can make this all work using Perfect AIM. You just have to warm up a little longer.

Just Joking sir... Man talk about one thing effecting other things... you have a story there sir... As I've said, please take some time to get the health base line back in order before adding more risky behavior (obviously that is a relative statement)..

Hope you the best sir...

Randy

That would really be a trick. I had the soda in my pocket and I reached down to catch it because it was falling out. I wasn't trying to drink it while riding the bike. .

And I agree that it wasn't too smart.

I had taken one of the seizure meds about an hour before the bike ride. I hadn't taken one for about 5 days because I was having some pretty bad side effects. They make you feel like your in a fog.

These meds impair your judgement for sure. I don't know what is worse the seizures or the side effects. I looked up Kepra on the internet and they were saying that most people that take this say the side effects are worse. i'm starting to see why.

I just want to clarify something. After I got knocked out by Rory I went to the room just totally wiped out. I gave it all I had and there was no more. I was exhausted.

I went back to the room and had a hard time finding my way through the casino to get to the room.

All I said on that first post after the tourny was my Tank was empty.

Johnny jumped on it that I was making an excuse for losing. Just another opportunity to try and ridicule me as he's done so many times in the past.

When I put down all those injuries i was just trying to be funny by kind of saying if i wanted to use an excuse I had plenty to pick from. I was going to even make some up to really make it look rediculous and funny. Like Brain hemmorage and historectomy but I thought I had enough already to make the point.

I didn't say any of them.

All I said was that my tank was empty. Period.

And at that moment in my life that was a big accomplishment.

Just to write those few words.

Saying my tank was empty is by no way disrespecting my opponent.

Rory's tank was empty also. He had been in the losers bracket after his first match.

But nobody should ever count Rory out. Even as wore out as he was he still could have dug down and won this thing. I've seen him over the years fight some great battles on the pool table.

Plus to get where we were we both had to play some pretty good pool.

It was a great tourny and a great event.

I'm still not counting Pueblo, Co off my list.

Left knee is pinching on the inside real bad. Hard to walk. My ribs on the left side got it pretty good from the handle bar as I fell.

Everything else is pretty good today.

Got a couple of lessons to do on the way out there if I take the high road through Fargo.

I will be stopping through Des moines on the way back.

Great town with some good friends there.

See ya then maybe.

Thanks for the smiles Mr Jeff..............

Give me a call, Gene. I've got some potential students for you, if they can let their egos down just a bit and ask for some help. I'd like a tuneup myself and to ask you if I'm doing what you taught me correctly still. I'm thinking I'm off track just a bit but what I'm doing is working but seems too hard to sustain.

Shiny side up,

Do they make training wheels for a 26" bike?

.

I think your new tag line should be:

One man and a tricycle with 18 inch training wheels with spinner rims. ;)

I hope your injuries clear up quickly Gene. I had a similar accident. I was golfing a world class course (Landfall's Nicklaus course in Wilmington, NC.)

On our 27th hole, as I was 1 over par for the day, I hit a shot, then got in the cart alone, did a turn as I got on the cart path, the wind was howling, and as the path quickly turned into a wooden bridge with a sizable bump, our scorecard blew off.

I instinctively reached for and caught it left handed and then with the cart's front wheels still turned, I hit the bridge's bump. I proceeded to hit the bridge front railing... Hard.

My right index finger was on the wheel and took the full brunt as it jammed into the steering wheel. My joint between the hand knuckle and next knucle shattered into 7 f'g pieces.

Surgery... A steel ladder with 9 pins were installed. $12K

Moral of the stories?

1) F the Pepsi and F the scorecard!

2) We're not getting much wiser

I never fell like that from a bike before. It could have been worse. These wounds will heal.
At almost 61 the bones are pretty brittle so they say.
I have a neighbor here that walks real slow. I'm going to take a Perfect Walking lesson from him tomorrow.

I noticed this winter where he has this technique when he gets to an icy patch on the side walk he takes some kind of half steps. It shouldn't take me long to master this if I watch closely.

I wonder what a Perfect Walking lesson would cost?
